Renner’s ferociously powerful performance is the best thing about “The Mayor of Kingstown,” a gritty, highly pedigreed, impressively photographed and well-acted series.
The grim goings-on and generally sour worldview that Mayor of Kingstown established with its first season have not abated with the arrival of its second. But nor has the fine acting and character work that exists in its many one-on-one moments.

This show has to be one of the darkest things I've watched in a long time! I absolutely love it!

Alas, as Mike’s actions suggest, show and character alike seem instead to find more narrative interest in (re)establishing well-worn plots about feuding gangs and violent power grabs. It may be gripping but it’s uninspired, both as television and as meditation on law and order in 2023.
Sheridan and his writers deal so much in shades of gray and blurred lines that it becomes impossible to make out any of the larger themes.
For now, it seems too content to wallow in a world of awful people doing awful things. And these first two episodes erect walls of toxicity from which the rest of the season could have a tough time escaping.
The show is aiming for the dramatic heights of The Wire and The Shield but falls short. The performances are decent – particularly Taylor Handley as Mike’s police officer brother – and the plotting is assured. But it is undone by the violence for violence’s sake.
Renner, as the lead of the show, too easily snaps into a prestige-TV grimace without much underneath. And the show around him treats unhappiness as the subject rather than a condition of an environment with much more to explore. It’s hard to imagine the viewer who will want to spend much more than the pilot’s first hour in Kingstown.
I actually made an account just to review this show because I think the critics are so off base. It's really engaging, the storyline is strong, and the acting is very good. It is pretty dark and gritty, and as with any crime show, there are parts that are not realistic, but that doesn't detract from how compelling it is, in my opinion. I watched the whole thing in a matter of days and am eagerly awaiting the new episode tomorrow.

Great acting but terrible story line. At times it doesn't even make sense. For instance. Iris is terrified of Milo and nobody knows where he's hiding but iris is like a homing pigeon making a B line right to where he's hiding. A family is hauling a boat and seems to be on vacation. The last thing you would think is that they are killers. Makes zero since. The writers have gotten lazy. I think they're pressured to write episodes and who cares if they make sense.
