Outcast is incredibly visceral, both in its scenes of demonic possession and in the punch-happy tactics of the titular amateur exorcist. But it's also a tense, meditative psychological drama about trauma, redemption and belief, with nuanced performances throughout and a grim but arresting visual style that is not without flashes of humor. In its second and third episodes, the material periodically drags to a crawl while laying the bedrock foundation for forthcoming action. And its habit of leaving key details and interpersonal dynamics vague borders on irritating. Judging from the beginning, it's going to be a superb horror show !! Well directed, gives the viewer enough chills to come back wanting more. Nice cinematography and photography. Along with the Preacher, they'll be the tv horror shows for this summer.

Was really worried that this would just be another "The Walking Dead" or something like that, so I was absolutely pleased to see that "Outcast" is a dark show that has a very art-house horror vibe to it, making for some really interesting comic book TV. Excellent first episode. If the rest of the season is anywhere near its caliber then we are in for a treat and a thrill ride. This show balances a great southern outsider drama along the lines of Rectify while stirring in excellent creepy horror genre elements. By the end of the firstExcellent first episode. S01E01

After watching 'Banshee' on Cinemax, I decided to give 'Outcast' a try as well. The trailers looked very creepy, and being a big fan of 'The Walking Dead', seeing another show from Robert Kirkman intrigued me. After watching the first episode, i was not disappointed. This showS01E01

After watching 'Banshee' on Cinemax, I decided to give 'Outcast' a try as well. The trailers looked very creepy, and being a big fan of 'The Walking Dead', seeing another show from Robert Kirkman intrigued me.

After watching the first episode, i was not disappointed. This show had me feeling very anxious throughout.

The story starts off with a young boy named Joshua, mutilating and even cannibalizing himself. After some back story, we find out that he is indeed possessed by a demon, which seems to be prevalent in this world.

We are also introduced to a man named Kyle, whose mother was also possessed when he was a kid. Kyle is living alone in an unkempt home. We find out that his wife and daughter left him after an incident, as his foster sister is trying to help him.

Kyle hears about Joshua's situation and seeks out the town's reverend, whom Kyle knew as a boy from his mother's possession. Kyle and the reverend are able to combat the demon possessing Joshua after a few attempts, but the demon claims to know Kyle and his history.

The main plot of the season will seemingly be Kyle's struggle against the demonic forces that are possessing people, as well as his own personal demons.

The show was extremely creepy and unnerving. Watching Joshua mutilate himself during his possession was down-right disgusting and stomach-turning. I really enjoyed the show, being a supernatural horror fan. I think that shows like this belong on stations like Cinemax due to their graphic nature. While I don't need to see what could be construed as porn during a TV show, I feel like basic cable channels are held back on the content they are allowed to show. Cinemax and stations like it have a real opportunity to put out high quality programming that could eventually get them more renowned properties. I mean, could you imagine 'The Walking Dead' on Cinemax? It would be insane.

My rating: 8 out of 10… Expand

After the first couple of episodes, I would have given it a 9, but 4 or 5 in, I feel like it's losing its momentum and much of the magical feel that it started with. Too much focus on the reverend is boring. The acting is good and the premise is enthralling, they just don't have enough plot to keep it moving forward. It's just episode after episode of everyone being really tense with no big payoffs, or reveals about how this universe works. I've go a sneaking suspicion the writers themselves haven't nailed down the rules governing everything, and that they're going to pull one of those crap moves and eventually say, "It was all about the interpersonal relationships, not about a supernatural story, and how provincial of you to think otherwise." At which point the critics nod sagely and declare how provincial we all were to think otherwise. But that mind trick only works on the weak minded, and I call BS on it every time. Come up with a plot or take a hike.… Expand

This show is appalling. It's a cliche-filled mess which hinges on outdated, ridiculous Christian mythology and hacky, stilted dialogue. Every attempt at building suspense and tension ends up being unintentionally hilarious, and every character is terrible.
