At its best, the series is wholly original in its pursuit of telling a dramatic espionage story while leavening it with inspired doses of quirk and a refreshing, even lovely look at existential crises. It is, all told, a hugely ambitious undertaking that probably won't get the attention it deserves, and that's a real shame.
One of the most well done and enjoyable shows made. It does not fall short on any aspect and will make you laugh as well as feel so very sad. So much talent is displayed through acting, camera angles, music and more. It even makes fun of sexism with a bunch of small ****, what more could you ask for?
Simply one of the top 5 TV shows in the last ten years. It's the first TV show that goes into an almost surrealistic explosion of cinematographic joy without falling into the idiotic and nonsensical. It is teetering between lightness and depression, the comical and the dramatic in very delightful and nuanced tones. The script, the dialogues, the richness of the characters, the acting and the refined, sharp cinematography all push clichés and tropes aside to deliver a new unique piece of art. Real art, not binge TV.
That puts shows like bloated, self-important and pontificating shows like Fargo or The Americans (referred to by other critics) miles behind.
The only problem is the atrociously bad French of the supposedly Luxembourgeois characters. I hope this will be fixed for season 2.
It’s less an action drama than a droll, often gleefully random comedy about deception, family, and the complexity of the human personality. It sets a distinct narrative path for itself but then departs from it early and often. Over time the digressions don’t just subsume the show’s main plot, they become the main source of its specialness.
Every time Patriot feels like it’s going to click into its rhythm and start working consistently (such as in some interesting background for Smith’s character in episode three), it derails itself with a wild tonal shift. And, most damagingly, Dorman’s flat performance doesn’t serve as the bridge from the show’s espionage elements to its comedy beats.
Insufferable. ... At first, it’s nice to see TV veterans O’Quinn and Smith on screen again, but soon it becomes grating to see such talented actors trapped in such an airless, self-indulgent and smug story.
This is a fantastic show. Fans of the Coen Brothers, Bunuel and other surrealists will enjoy this thought-provoking, well written and superbly acted series. Give it a few episodes before making any judgements. It really comes into its element about five episodes in. Loving it!
Great show! It's not for everyone but I loved it. There is a beautiful, dark, quirky Wes Anderson vibe that runs throughout the show. The actors are fantastic and the writing is superb. Can't wait for season 2.
9's and 10's are studio shills, and it's so obvious. Anyway, I endured 3, hour-long episodes of what was supposed to be a promising geopolitical mini-series. Instead, it's a slow-paced character study of an aloof assassin. Such a waste of an opportunity. I'm so disappointed, especially after having just finished a good Amazon mini-series "Goliath". Don't. Waste. Your. Time.
This is a good show. The problem with sites like metacritic is that you would miss so many good shows if you just follow the score given by the so called critics.
