Single Drunk Female demonstrates the hard-won emotional maturity of a recovering addict by allowing Sam to not only get her act together, but also become a little less tediously self-involved as a result.

"Single Drunk Female" similarly benefits from Finch's introspection about her sobriety, filtered with care and grace through Black-D'Elia performance. Through her, Samantha's struggles feel universal, in that you don't have to have battled cravings for drugs and alcohol for her perpetual life fatigue to speak to you.

Single Drunk Female gets off to a strong start with its first episode and gets better as it goes along, because it builds a world of nuanced characters right from its first scenes.

The sensitive and relatable approach to its subject matter treats the seriousness of alcoholism and the difficulties of recovery with respect and dignity, the laughs a tonic rather than gratuitous. Recommended for all generations at the end of the alphabet.

This show has a real perspective on its central character, a young woman who’s spent her twenties hiding from her feelings. And beginning at the moment when she must finally confront them gives rise to thoughtful plotting, but also to the sort of wit and observation that’s only possible when one is finally being honest.

While Black-D’Elia’s drunk acting is always welcome, it’s just as joyful to see her as the person Samantha evolves into.

In a perfect/streaming world, the half-hour episodes would have a bit more time to breathe — say, 30 actual minutes rather than the basic cable standard of 22-plus-commercials. But there's enough fizzy fun here to make SDF worth sampling, and I wouldn't say no to a second round.

There are times when “Single Drunk Female” is predictable, and the “drunk” acting is spotty in the flashbacks. But those flaws didn’t get in the way of my enjoyment.

Single Drunk Female is not particularly interested in neatness. What it prioritizes is clarity — of voice, of vision, of perspective. The results are steady and likable, even when its leading lady acts anything but.

However, that was not the case here. Single Drunk Female gives a poignant and truthful view of the struggle with addiction, yet it refuses to compromise on comedy. It is one of my unexpected gems of the 2021-22 television season, and thus I can only recommend it. Full Review »

It was over-the-top of Mt. Everest. If mother and daughter fell off a cliff at the end of epi 1 there'd be a huge round of applause. Second episode was calmer and they did a better job though both mother and daughter lean toward cartoon characters. The rest of the cast attempts to depict better human beings which dampens the nastiness. My score is about as high as I think they can climb. If you want to watch a rehab story with plenty of humor and better lead characters then watch This Way Up. Full Review »
