Somebody Somewhere has a knack for spiky sentimentality that goes for the jugular. It is impressively opposed to the idea of showiness or razzmatazz, but even in its quietest moments, it is dazzling stuff.
Everett and Hiller are the dominant forces within “Somebody Somewhere,” but the supporting cast is compelling. ... If you’ve ever just driven around with your bestie on a Sunday looking for something to do, and what you did was boring but you two connected, “Somebody Somewhere” captures the singularity of that experience.

Enjoyed it. The real stars are the family, friends, the setting and the tone. Jeff Hiller (Joel) is amazing. Michael Hagerty (Dad) is great as he is in anything he does. Murray Hill (as Dr. Fred) is hysterical. Points for the non-Hollywood cast and the setting is pretty (even though largely filmed in Illinois).

No one looks like a TV star and that's a good thing. While nothing dramatic seems to happen, the show is surprisingly absorbing and real, with a high "feel good" factor.

Somebody Somewhere has that settled-in feeling that make good shows become terrific shows in their second seasons. Some characters may be gone, but the show’s comedic core and its heart are still there, and we’ll follow its slice-of-Midwest-life vibe for the entire season.
A lovely addition to this genre [low-concept character portraits], which, importantly, is not afraid to focus on the challenges and freedoms that come with middle age.
Blessed with an eagle eye for detail, a laid-back sense of humor and a disarming sense of compassion, Somebody Somewhere is a mostly low-key delight that occasionally spills over into sheer exuberance.
A spiky and endearing seven-part HBO series.
Very little happens over the course of the seven-episode season, but this is the point. ... The smallness of the stories helps capture the aimlessness Sam feels — noting that she and Joel are already in their forties, she suggests of their dreams, “It’s not going to happen, and it’s definitely not going to happen here” — while making the little victories and minor defeats ring out much more loudly than if Sam’s life were a nonstop thrill ride. Sometimes this show is all too real. Few shows are set in the Midwest and even fewer follow the kind of intermittent workers that live there. (Who doesn’t need a break from watching office workers?) The humor is so genuine that I wonder if the camera crew follows these people around and records what they improv. This is such a delightful show, I hope it catches on like Schitt’s Creek.

Reminds me of growing up on Alabama. Fun, light-hearted, not too heavy even when dealing with heavy subjects. Great acting, casual conversations and funny situations - the show highlights the fact even rural areas have diversity and people with different personalities and viewpoints.

Really enjoying this slice of life in a small town dramedy, but I have to say my least favorite part is Everett. I love all the supporting character (barring the trans professor who constantly makes bad jokes out of pronouns and misgendering), especially Joel, but Everett seems to take advantage of all of them and often, though inadvertently, treats the poorly. I can't tell if that is self-deprecating humor or she is painting herself as an ashole who occasionally does good. Regardless, I can't stop watching.
