Unlikeable characters, SJW principles outweigh story development, character development, logic and entertainment value. I feel very sorry for Anson Mount being a part of this abomination. He is a fine actor .I am sure he had to take a long shower to rid himself of the stench of this show. It takes talent however to assemble this many physically unattractive actors on one show. It takes hubris to shove this show down the throats of an unwilling audience and push its immense failure for 4 seasons. I haven't watched season 4 even though I have Paramount.I did watch much of the first 3 seasons. It was sort of like watching a car wreck. I would watch Season 4 if they had the Mystery Science theater 3000 guys writing ongoing commentary during the show. That is what it deserves. Expand

The episodes are not very memorable, unlike other Star Trek series. Discovery is a gritty, non-optimistic version of Star Trek with prequel continuity issues, e.g., the Klingon makeover is just unnecessary, holograms, or the "instant everywhere" spore drive. However, some issues will be reverted in the second season.
If you start to think about the plots for a minute, you will often find many issues that do not add up. Some episodes are so packed with "stuff" and contradictions that I didn't even care to follow the plot in a logical sense anymore. The voice-over pathos inspired by the JJ Abraham movies is just another empty element. And most of the characters are shady (especially in the first season) and unlikable. Some characters become charicatures. Michael Burnham, for example, is supposed to be the hero of the series, but since she's not the captain of the Discovery, she's not in a position to make the big decisions, yet she has all the answers and rebels without consequence (because she's always right in the end). As for the production, the series is well done. There are annoyingly overused light glares in the first two seasons, but the costumes, masks, and visuals are very good at movie level. All in all, I wish they had invested the budget in better scripts, stories, and dialogues written by actual science fiction authors.
I recommend watching the earlier Star Trek series, The Expanse, or The Orville instead.

Building up a consistent universe can't be done if fashion political views shared by autors in the real life society change everything in the story, the spirit of your fiction.

Discovery is poorly written, protagonists are superhumans, a little bit dumbs - but I supose that scenarist could do better - but they can do anything. antagonists are bads stupids and ugly.

The story TL;DR version is: "Trumpists are klingons, klingons are bad, we are good, we kill bad". From an entire neutral pov, this story make no sense compared to the olds star trek. You feel that this show promotes a new wave racism and not diversity.
Every body good is a female, every white male are bad and/or coward and/or stupid except if they are gay.

1 point for the design that is good, people doing the visual effect are the only one that deserve to be paid for this show.

Completely ignores canon and the spirit of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek in my opinion.
It turns out that in addition to this show being terrible SJW woke mess that they're currently also being sued for stealing material from a video game.

James Issacs carried it for a bit, so did the Star Trek brand and some of the writing was ok earlier in the series. Also Brian Fuller has made some great and interesting tv (Hannibal had some great moments).
This season begins with an excruciating speech from the main character where she repeats the phrase 'this is who we are!' over and over while the show cuts to the faces of the crew who are looking proud and emotional. It is a truly awful moment.
Then the show gets under way, it's built around a main character who is basically superpowered in her wisdom and strength. They’ve even sacrificed the character of Spock so they can show just how strong and clever she is (he took her place in science academy unfairly (She's his adopted sister), he's a spoilt child and basically if you think he's smart, she's smarter!).
The plot is daft and amateurish, the acting involves a lot of speech-making and manufactured emotionalism. But the effects are good.
All in all this is the weakest film or tv addition to the Star Trek universe to date. It’s too melodramatic, too preachy, it lacks subtlety, the storylines don’t work and the characters are mostly forgettable and generic.
I haven’t give it 0 out of 10, because despite the story-telling incompetence, the show is strong in terms of visual design.

Discovery feels like a generic space action show that could've really had any name other than "Star Trek" attached to it. Almost everything is wrong with this show.

1) Every Star Trek fan knows that Star Trek has a certain feeling. It was present in TNG, DS9, and VOY. Enterprise faltered a bit on this and Discovery doesn't have it at all.

2) Starfleet has completely abandoned everything it stood for and apparently it's absolutely OK to just act willy-nilly and shoot and anything if you feel like it. It seems as if the rules and laws that Stafleet holds sacred have all been thrown out the airlock.

The crew many times act like children, with one character in the first episode running onto the bridge telling the helm to do donuts because it's cool, which would never be acceptable no matter which navy you belong to, futuristic or otherwise. There's a massive lack of discipline on this ship and it's completely unrealistic and gets rid of everything Star Trek has taught us about behaving and having manners. In the previous shows you only broke the rules if you felt it was absolutely necessary, not because you're an impatient ****

It's almost as if the ship is run by adults suffering from extended adolescence.

3) Klingons never cared about their dead because the soul was what mattered. The body was nothing but an empty shell, so making sure the soul made it to Sto'Vo'Kor with honor was their priority, not caring for a dead husk. Klingons are no longer Klingons.

4) Memorable main theme. Discovery has none. ST:E alienated 50% of the fan base within the first 30 seconds of the first episode because of the horrible musical score chosen to introduce the show. Discovery has a forgettable main theme. The only way you'd be able to "recognize" it in an audio quiz would be by pure deduction; it would be the only one left that you didn't recognize.

Star Trek music is not supposed be a generic mediocre orchestral score that doesn't evoke emotions of heroism, bravery, or wonder.

5) The identity politics. Oh, joy...

The first black captain was Cpt. Sisko in DS9. He was a brilliant captain and a brilliant character who didn't have to resort to screaming "racism" every time he didn't get his way. The white characters on the show weren't overtly diminished because of their skin color in order to make Sisko more prominent because of his.

Jadzia Dax in DS9 was a character who through her symbiont had changed gender multiple times. This wasn't anything anyone cared about because it wasn't the main emphasis of the character. They didn't make a big deal out of this obvious metaphor for transsexuality. Instead they emphasized the vast amount of knowledge she had accrued over her seven lifetimes and they made use of her extensive expertise, making her a strong female character based on nothing but her own merits.

Captain Janeway was a great character who needed nothing other than her own merits to stand strong as the show's first female captain. She stood alongside strong male characters and she did so as an equal, not as someone who needed to be made stronger by making her male crew any less masculine.

STD has to belittle and denigrate masculinity in order to make the female characters seem stronger and better. The fact that they're quite badass on their own isn't enough for the writers of this show, and the feminist agenda becomes painfully clear at this point. Elevating women isn't for feminists: masculinity has to be belittled and portrayed as something negative instead of making women just as good as men at everything men do.

Blurring the gender lines is also a clear and overt thing in this show. The most obvious one being the main female character named Michael.

Also, the fact that J.J. Abrams publicly stated that there was an obsession on his part with race (because the Emmy Awards had "the whitest **** room ever") when casting this show proves how incredibly SJW influenced this show really is.

I don't need politics in my TV shows unless they're obviously political TV shows like House of Cards or The West Wing. I watch Star Trek because I want to escape to a better world, not because I want to experience more of the world I already live in. Every single Star Trek show has done this for me except for STD (which is an apt abbreviation for this show).

Let me beging by stating: I'm a strong believer in equality between sexes. You won't find that in this show!

This series can literally be summed up to this: women good, men bad. The vile and disgusting sexist and racist writers of this show see equality between sexes like this: men are only good when following women's orders, but god forbid they are straight white male. Don't believe me? Watch the show and keep an eye out for this. All the figures of authority that are autonomous are females, the men in this show simply do not think. What do I mean by that? I mean to say, all the men that are in positions of authority (few as they are) ALWAYS AND ONLY do what their female comrades tell them to, whether they be their superior OR SUBORDONATE! There's always a whisper or suggestion by a woman that gets followed religiously by the captain if he's a man, only the women with authority actually have their own ideas. Check it out, rewatch the show with this in mind. That should tell you something about how the writers see males. In fact, the writers are so fanatic in their gender/racial fascism, that you won't find one single exception to this rule so far (season two).

The above overtakes everything in this show. This is not a sci-fi show, and is only "Star Trek" in name, in reality being a pure, compressed brainwashing attempt charged with political and ideological propaganda, devised, with intention or otherwise, to devide the sexes, sexualities and race (exactly the opposite of the old series)

If you're wondering why the show continues, in spite of the overwhelming negative feedback, in this humble reviewers' opinion, it's because YOU (WE) ARE NOT THE TARGET! Our children are! That's why the show walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but looks like the golden goose! Shiny special effects and action scenes will absorb children into it, remember your youth? They are sending a message of revolt and revolution, for all the wrong reasons. I hope that revolution will happen, and the degenerates responsible for the show will be brought to justice for their attemps to instigate discrimination agains men (in particular straight white ones), and serve their (in my opinion) rightfully deserved time.

In conclusion: don't waste your money on this, don't fund the propaganda machine. Also, very important! Keep well OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh, DISCOVERY... Contrary to what some may think, it is not difficult to satisfy most Trek fans. A new ship, a new crew, respecting what came before, and good writing. Is there really anything else we want? Where to begin.. The first mistake DISCOVERY made was being set in the past. If they wanted to blaze their own trail and change the galaxy in big ways - without disrupting established canon - set it in the future! They want ridiculous new tech we never heard of - Fungus Drives, Data-Like Androids, etc., again they could have easily set it post-VOYAGER and solved these things, but no... And why? Much like the Kelvin Timeline films, it is to milk characters that have already been established and are popular, by basing new characters and stories off them. There is one word for this - Unoriginal. They do their best to screw up already established canon, write themselves into a corner, and are forced to then time jump into the distant future to try and be fresh again. No real character development, except for Burnham who is over-developed and ridiculous. The show is full of cheap thrills and loud and fancy effects to make up for lack of storytelling. Gone are the slow burn episodes, replaced by phaser fights and explosions every 30 seconds like some kind of Star Trek Die Hard. Gone are thoughtful and meaningful discussions about science and the nature of space travel, replaced with Time Crystals and other pseudo science BS. It was a nice run, and Star Trek lived a good life - but if there's anything DISCOVERY and PICARD prove, its over. Squandered opportunities. Expand

This show was written by angry feminists and sjw's as their vehicle to push their own views completely detracting from anything that actually made Star Trek great in the past. Nothing was written by actual sci-fi fans, just terrible writers and casting directors portraying all the men as weak, all the females as saviors and every_single_episode has all the women crying after every single incident it's literally unwatchable. Weak women can't write strong women they have no context, which is why all the women come off as weak. Weak men can't write strong men which is why all the men come off as a-holes or utterly incompetent... unless they are gay of course then they save the show every other episode somehow and are both stunning and brave guys! This is sad...very sad...they destroyed Star Trek. Season four gets worse with every episode. It's only about their feelings and how sad they all are all the time. That's not what startrek is about.
Now even the maincomputer on the ship develops "feelings". The characters are bad written and so are the episodes. If something is exploding in 30 seconds, you don't talk about how afraid you are with your teammate 20 seconds, you just do what needs to be done.

This is the worst BS I've ever seen that uses the name "Star Trek".

In my opinion they said: "we need gay characters, females, non-binaries and all the other possibilities". Let's write a story around them what it means to be LBQTSGHFD!
They made the characters and stories exactly like that, to shove into our faces how important it is to be that way.

In addition, it is just too brimming with emotion, everyone always on the verge of tears, with melodramatic music, gushing. Bleah. Michael Burnham lacks command presence and she does not have a good First Officer as a foil. Saru was a far better Captain. Initially, I welcomed her character as introducing body diversity, but Tilly is now obese. She is not physically fit to serve as a Star Fleet Officer. This isn't bodyshaming, but there are physical fitness requirements for this type of job and she flat out does not meet them. An overweight person can be fit, but an obese person is not. Period. WokeTrek

As a major fan of all that is star trek, i am somewhat disillusioned and disappointed with the latest incarnation. This latest STD incarnation is basically just one big left wing social justice warrior propaganda series, it seems to have zero direction or purpose. It has very little in common with what star trek was and should be about.
The dialogue is so terrible, and especially Micheal Burnham a girl with a boys name, who whispers and tears up with those big puppy dog eyes in just about every episode and every scene, its cringeworthy utter ott garbage! And now she has her hair in crazy 3ft long braids! Its ridiculous. Plus why are all the heterosexual male actors treated like a lower form of intelligence during each episode, i remember one scene were Captain Pike practically gets **** slapped by Michael Burnham and then has to be rescued by her because of his incompetence! Yet chubby Tilly is a hero ever episode! The emasculation agenda is obvious! It just feels like another left wing feminist, LGBT Netflix woke propaganda show to me, its nothing more than a snowflake, social justice woke trek, a poor imitation of a once great Star Trek series. The snowflakes must love it, Otherwise, it truly sucks. Gene Roddenberry would puke on this garbage its been crucified by trans-woke activists!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is garbage.
The bullets:
- Looks great! The folks behind the scenes can not get enough praise from me.
- Not Star Trek in tone, direction or message.
- Characters are unlikable, main character is a huge Mary Sue, who, despite being the cause of millions of deaths due to an ego driven mutiny is everyone's darling and idol and the fat, annoying, red haired girl with more craters on her face than the lunar surface would not have passed Starfleet's training program.
- Disrespects canon in every way it can, tries to insert 'do you remember this?' moments, people, props and even sound effects (anachronistically) from better Trek to try and convince you IT'S a better show.
- Tries too hard to be 'cool' by having characters swear like edgy teenagers. Pathetic. - Action takes the place of thought and depth or developed characters and I don't care about any of these.

How can you kill a half century of excellent stories and canon? This is how. Disrespecting everything that came before it that made it what it is.

She has two face expressions: looking meaningful and crying. She is a drama queen and her acting is not nuanced enough. Have you ever seen Captain Janeway or Captain Picard crying? And she is such a Mary Sue. It’s so annoying. Special effects are top notch. The storywriting is ridiculous, characters have no depth. STD never managed to get to the point that you really care about the story and the people in it. This show is trash! They should be ashamed of using the name Star Trek for this insult! Expand

And You, the author, don't understand those elements, or don't care about them, and so, you add them, but they are not organic integrated. When someone reads your essay, things don't make much sense. To reduce rejection, you as author, speeds up your writing, removing important stuff and adding a bunch of irrelevant stuff, so the reader can't keep up with everything and kind of go with the flow... It's like a Transformer movie...
If this show wasn't named star trek, and did not try to use previously created universe, it would be a bad show nonetheless.

Michael is proving to be a Mary-Sue, and there seems to be a lot of emotional development without moving the story forward. I barely made it through last season. By the end, the Red Angel was a pretty sketchy plot device. It's hard to imagine that the first season was the most creative, but it's looking that way. If the original Star Trek was a western set in space, this is a soap opera happening 900 years in the future. Discovery is going the same way as Picard. I have no reason to care about these people, nor do I believe in their ability to do what they are doing. I think the problem is with the creative team, not the production or the actors. Expand

I just struggle to enjoy a season long storyline that isn't just the backdrop. Pike was a shining beacon of what the show really needs and that's colorful uniforms and a step away from all the dreary darkness. The best episodes were the ones that deviated away from the overall storyline for a single episode.

Season one showed how dislikable they were in season one and that didn't change. Even the one character that was likable managed to turn insufferable or at least annoying in season two. That's okay, because they brought on new characters that helped raise the cast as a whole, because I didn't instantly hate them and they did a lot of good things without being an annoyance.

I have hope for season 3, but I'm pretty low on this show as a whole. I thought season 2 would get better. Nope.

The second season was the high point with Pike and crew but only went to highlight the larger problems with season one's lack of character development and concentration on Burnham who is unlikable. At least in the past if you did not like a certain character like Beverly for example or that you found her boring. You were only forced to have 2-3 episodes out of 24 to follow her. Now Burnham is the only focus of the show. Even when she is not in it the whole cast can't help but speak about her. By the time I arrived at season 3, the worst of the show showed it's ugly face. Season 3 was by far the worst Star Trek Season that I have ever seen. It seems to only center itself on the worst characters. That all said the show does have great actors who work on it. I could have watched much of the cast in a better written show. I personally like the Dr., Sauru, and the female engineer. Don't get me started on Burnham's connection to Spock. Expand

Nothing about this show attributes any of the redeeming qualities we've seen in previous Trek. This show is more about Michael Burnham and her righteousness than the crew of The Discovery. The crew of the Discovery also lack command structure and treat the ship like its a day at the office. No regard for command and lack decorum for commanding officers. Episode 3 of Season 3 had major plot holes in regards to Burnham and crew finding the mystery to the 'Burn'. If this season keeps up at this pace, I can't see myself investing any more time and emotion on this series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was onboard for Season 1; I was happy to finally have a new Star Trek show to look forward to. Getting through Season 1 was okay, not the best show but I decided to see what Season 2 would bring. I do not know what happened but from Season 2 onwards (I finished the series recently) it became more and more about pushing an agenda instead of a fun to watch Star Trek show.

Do not get me wrong, I have no issues with strong female leads, I quite like seeing that in series, but in this case, it is so obvious and just over the top. Every "important" person in the show is either female or gay, there is no balance. This has become worse from Season 2 onwards because we lost the main male character in Season 1 somewhere.

Now in essence, this is not a problem for a show, but combined with pushing agenda's, bad acting and having nothing to do with Star Trek it does become a problem.

I can understand why some people enjoy this show, but it is definitely not for me. I would like to see Sonequa Martin-Green in some other Sci-Fi shows.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The storyline is simply horrible...
the anti-climax of the season 3 finale is "meh" at best, the fact that the build up for the entire season resulted in some child simply needing to be told not to be afraid to exit a hologram and everything is solved is just too easy and lame... Every problem they faced this season is easily solved within the episodes in super dumb ways most of the times. Nothing is too big of a problem in this feel good setting where everything gets solved after Michael cries for a bit, ps. She cries in every episode this season, no joke..

The fact that this seasons grand enemy is some low key rebel is boring at best. Also, tilly, need i say more? She rises to captain of the ship not even being within a light-year of next in line considering rank, what for? Because it feels good, i guess? It's so dumb, this series is made for young woke girls who don't like authority and can't stand the thought of following protocol when one can switch it up for some tears and bubbly feeling inside instead.

Utterly gutted what Startrek is build upon, i mean season 1 and 2 took some liberties, but it worked since it stayed within line and simply made a modern version, this season goes completely off route and completely derailes, it's sad, the season could have made an openning for a new intricate future for Startrek, i stead it turned into some new age teenage drama of sorts.

Star Trek Discovery, or STD as it's known as, is a poorly written show full of miserable characters. It's set in a bleak universe that has NOTHING in common with the familiar, positive Star Trek the fans love.

The actors have so little to work with, you can't help but feel sorry for them. The absolute worst is the lead character who's arrogant and smug and lectures constantly. She's nothing more than a substandard gender swapped Mr Spock.

Avoid at all cost! Watch real Star Trek instead like the original from 1966 or any of the other Star Trek inspired shows that came later like The Orville.

There's not been a single episode in season 3 without crying. They're supposed to be Star Trek officers ffs. Burnham is supposed to be raised by Vulcans - have a little composure. And they seem to have a thing against straight men - most of them have been killed off or sent off at this point (Spock, Lorca, Pike and now Book). If this an attempt at female empowerment, you're doing it wrong. Jet Reno (Tig Notaro) seems to be the only character who isn't annoying (she's an island of charisma is a sea of whinge-baggery).
