Stewart’s just lovely in this. He has spent his post-"Next Generation" and post-"X-Men" career staking out various corners of the indie and studio film world, to mixed success. Picard suits him wonderfully, still. Just as the first round of “Star Trek” movies, the ones with William Shatner and the gang, made hay on the old idea of old dogs learning new tricks, “Picard” too has some of that in its synthetic DNA. And it works, because the actors are the right actors, and it’s treated seriously but without a crushing sense of solemnity. Read full review

Picard’s lack of faith in the institution he once looked to for guidance is a very 2020 mood. It’s not the show’s subtlest play, but it is classic Trek. For the most part, Picard is strongest when it is trying on other genre trappings—like the mystery element, which feels partially imported from Chabon’s best-selling novel The Yiddish Policemen's Union, or the unwitting-synthetics-in-disguise element, which could be Blade Runner, Terminator, or Battlestar Galactica (take your pick). ... It’s a true pleasure to see Stewart in his element again, and it’s a relief that Picard has managed to build a new universe around him that we’d actually like to spend more time in. By the end of Episode 3, I was starting to feel those familiar Next Generation vibes again. Read full review

Picard has flashes of eccentricity, and any science-fiction show with a Miguel de Unamuno shoutout demands a quantum of hope. But for now, this is another disappointing Star Trek. Should we give it a chance? My advice: Disengage. Read full review

poor star trek for have so pathetic community, i love sto and stng but isnt a reason for critic everytime the new direction of the universe. Precisely what it needs and intends to be. I like the fragility and wisdom of Picard and the subtle use of technology in realising the world. I hope it focuses on intellectual and moral issues instead of simple action sequences moving forward. That was always Star Trek's real strength.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was concerned that the series wouldn't give us a good reason to really *care* about the new characters. But from the first episode it seems that they've taken the time to build up their backgrounds and in a way that makes you emotionally invested in them pretty quickly. They've also taken the time to craft the context to explain why Picard is in the position he is and how he ended up there. I don't think the direction Star Fleet took is something uncharacteristic, especially considering how we saw a definite authoritarian streak during the Dominion War, and we've also seen Star Fleet officers collaborate with Klingons to start a war. There has always been a tendency, usually curbed, to act out of fear. It also makes sense that Picard would never go along what Star Fleet decided to do. We know that Star Fleet doesn't really have that cozy a relationship with synthetic life forms given how they've treated Data, Lal, and the EMH. All in all, a great start to the show and very much in keeping with canon.… Expand

The sad thing is, they are probably right.

Which is why we get righteous grandstanding like this, a perfectly competently put together first episode that appeals to todays zeitgeist but one that comes with an overt message of the doom of our times, that our society is metaphorically on book 5 of the decline and fall of the roman empire and that we must fight to avoid book 6.

Once again Star Trek has chosen not to provide optimistic escapism from our world, but a dark reflection of it to wallow in.… Expand

I was fully invested in the first couple episodes but by episodes 4 and 5... I'm done. This feels like someone trying to make a Mass Effect TV show with a Star Trek wrapper. I could rattle off a laundry list of similarities but the most obvious ones are: Arrogant, self-centered Starfleet;I was fully invested in the first couple episodes but by episodes 4 and 5... I'm done. This feels like someone trying to make a Mass Effect TV show with a Star Trek wrapper. I could rattle off a laundry list of similarities but the most obvious ones are: Arrogant, self-centered Starfleet; synth revolution and anti-synth story line; shadowy agency infiltrating Starfleet; dark, angsty characters; mercenary/lawless sectors of Federation space; Freecloud is a straight up copy/paste of Omega... hell even the damn new weapons are practically lifted from Mass Effect design, as was on full display at the end of episode 5 with Seven of Nine. At this rate, I expect a Borg reappearance and for their lore to be retconned to be more like Mass Effect's Reapers.

This isn't Star Trek. This makes J.J. Abrams action-centric reboot movies look Roddenberry-esque by comparison.… Expand

Since the show is produced by the same people that brought STD on us, it is no surprise that this does not feel like Star Trek on may levels. Strip it of the characters named Picard and Data and get rid of the Starfleet insignia and the Bat'leth on the wall - and it is nothing more than aSince the show is produced by the same people that brought STD on us, it is no surprise that this does not feel like Star Trek on may levels. Strip it of the characters named Picard and Data and get rid of the Starfleet insignia and the Bat'leth on the wall - and it is nothing more than a simple story of a bitter old man with a once better life, a standard textbook plot for first year's screenwriter’s school. But what disappoints even more is the fact that the first episode does not encourage you to want more, the writers did not manage that the viewers start to care about the characters and the events and it simple does not tell you why it is relevant and worth to watch. This is bad writing, period. On top of that, the show kind of looks cheap, no big bang to open with, the locations shots do not convey the look of the 24th century at all. The inside of the borg cube seems to be a rip-off from an old STD set. If this first episode marks the level of quality the procedures can come of with, I rather have an Earl Grey - the real one, not the decaf stuff Jean-Luc drinks now.

The 1 point I give is for Dinero who does a hell of a job playing Number One.… Expand
