For the first eight episodes, this show is a play-it-safe conversion of Jim Gaffigan's stand up routine into a sitcom format. Gaffigan, Ashley Williams, and Michael Ian Black are just funny and charming enough to make it watchable, but there's certainly no edge to any of it, or any real sense of originality. Then, in the ninth episode, things take a very unexpected turn towards the experimental, and suddenly you're watching a show that seems intent on becoming a spiritual successor to Dan Harmon's Community.
I don't know what caused the transition, but it's a good one. The show it turns into is really a lot of fun, much like Community was at its high points. They start bending reality to do things like explore alternate timelines and break the fourth wall. I'm tempted to provide spoilers as evidence, but I don't want to ruin the surprises. Some of them are so well executed that I couldn't believe I was watching the same show that did an entire story about Jim's obsessive relationship with cake, just a few episodes previous. I can only hope this stays on the air long enough for people to give it a (well deserved) second look.
Great light comedy; full discolure I am a Jim Gaffigan fan, I find his standup to be easy and relateable. And thats pretty much how the show goes, its not going to be groundbreaking or a game changer, but your definitely going to have some laughs. Truly has a new york location feeling, love seeing him bring his comedy friends into every episode, michael ian black is becoming an ok actor, wouldn't mind seeing him in some movies now. Only problem i have is i get grossed out watching Jim Gaffigan constantly eat and be a blob even though hes on TV, but thats who he is right? And it still makes me laugh, I'll watch for sure.
The Jim Gaffigan Show showcases its star at his exasperated best, putting his now well-honed spin on the befuddled dad genre from which many a sitcom has supped.
Mostly his adventuress result in stray one-liners and stilted semi-riffs. Imagine a less nourishing Louie or Curb Your Enthusiasm, full of empty calories. [24 Jul 2015, p.54]
The show is at its slightest when it slides into the “dumb daddy” territory previously mined by “According to Jim” and myriad other sitcoms. But at its best, The Jim Gaffigan Show manages to be cleverer despite a familiar conceit.
The set-up is fine and the humor is mostly mac-and-cheese-flavored, but the first few episodes of The Jim Gaffigan Show struggle to nail down the “Modern Family”-like precision that seems to be the desired goal.
Gaffigan’s show was originally developed for CBS, and it has the safe, middle-of-the-road quality of most CBS sitcoms, which makes it just right for TV Land’s mild reinvention.
This Jim Gaffigan Show seems to be designed for smiles. No complaint with that. It is all about life in the Gaffigan apartment -- one wife and five children. It's like the Duggars without the crowd scene and without -- well, you know. If you have, ever have had, kids you will find this show eminently amusing. I really hope that Jim Gaffigan is exactly like his TV persona. I suspect he is. I would really like to be his next-apartment neighbor. Well, maybe his one-away-apartment neighbor. Those kids are pretty loud.
I am a big fan of Jim Gaffigan, so I was excited to hear this show was in production. I was bummed when CBS passed, but excited the show gets to live on. Gaffigan made a number of "preview" episodes available early, but they lacked the kind of background and world building that happens in the pilot. Said pilot was OK, but wasn't as funny as his stand up. I still have hopes this will be a fun summer show, but I can see why CBS passed. It lacks some of the zing and pop that make comedies stand out today.
I like Jim Gaffigan but this show has absolutely zero chance of renewal. This is abysmal. Opening line of the show is the first joke of his latest stand up show. If you have seen his latest painful comedy show all about kids and wife, the show is a stereo typical sitcom effort. The casting is bad. Nothing about this is plausible. Its contrived garbage. Not even close to the funny of his old material. Lazy predictable family comedy. The weak attempt to copy Seinfeld between each scene or location just shows how desperate the whole project is.
The first episode of this was really not funny or interesting at all. It's like some kind of family-style attempt at Louie that has no edge and telegraphs all of its (weak) punchlines. Not even a glimmer of interest in persisting with this one.
Absolutely the worst thing I have ever tried to sit through! Not funny AT ALL. Just could not believe it was brought back for a second season. Now these latest references to Jesus Christ are plain offensive and I am not a religious fanatic of any kind. Anyone who enjoys this show really needs to get a life. Nothing has ever prompted me to express my feelings until this guy came along. I will be looking for something else to view in this time slot - or - nothing at all would be better.
