The performances are vivid and engaging, beginning with Rachel Brosnahan as Midge. ... The writers take their time getting Midge out of the house and onto the comedy stage, but that enables them to develop the character naturalistically. ... Bit by bit, she’s finding her “c” (as in “comedy”) legs, though, and we can happily wait for the punch line.
Jauntily paced and cleverly written, the wonderfully engaging Mrs. Maisel is packed with winning regulars (none more so than Brosnahan's Midge), witty banter (a Sherman-Palladino specialty), sensational supporting players (including Kevin Pollak and David Paymer) and an exuberant sense of optimism (despite the obvious and incredibly daunting obstacles a female comedian faced in the late '50s).

SEASON 1
Must watch..terrific show!!! Saw Ms. Maisal over Memorial Day Weekend 2018 and the show is brilliant. A 50's housewife is more relevant today than when the show takes place. Rachel Brosnahan is great and earned a well deserved Golden Globe Award. The show is as much comedy as drama. I can't wait for season 2.

It shouldn’t work, but it does. Brosnahan, who had a memorable arc as a vulnerable sex worker on House of Cards, is enchanting as Midge. She’s both a naif in a man’s world and consistently underestimated.
It’s much, much more exciting when Midge is at the center of the frame, all by herself, or sharing it with Susie, whom Borstein imbues with charming sarcasm and occasional peeks of vulnerability.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel lives up to its billing with a wonderfully fresh attitude, lovingly capturing a conformist period vibe. [27 Nov - 10 Dec 2017, p.8]
Mrs. Maisel can--yup--be chatty to the point of exhaustion, and a little can go a long way. But what’s here is worth savoring and, if you can get past the verbal gymnastics, worth the trip.
While this newcomer might eventually reward that faith, having previewed four episodes, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel simply doesn't feel like another genuine headliner, at a time when Amazon needs to deliver one.

SEASON 1
Sets are amazing. So are clothes. And so are Susie's lines, which are the smartest, most surprising, and funniest in the show.
The problem is that, beyond Susie, we have a beautiful box without much inside. Like a lot of contemporary comedy, the self-consciousness is not quite smarmy, but close. "Look at us. Aren't we cute? Aren't we clever? Look at how clever we are."
So rather than seeing characters actually _be_ in the situations, we are watching them watching themselves be there. Or we are watching them through the writer/director watching themselves make a show. It's hard to be entertained, beyond superficially, when what you're mainly watching are people showing you how entertaining they are.
It's kinda like the opening shtick of the would-be comedian doing someone else's shtick. One is left so hungry for the original, which was genuinely funny.

If you're familiar with Gilmore Girls Any Sherman-Palladino's writing style then you'll know what to expect. A lot of fast fast dialog and characters verbally foiling with each other over nothing at all. Ebbing closer and closer to being a bit too smug and self aware to serve the narrative. It's a deal breaker for some and I am in that group. It's not that the show doesn't have it's moments, it does but they are drown out in a sea of Aaron Sorkin style blather that is anxiety inducing. If you're into that style, you might enjoy this show as it's just as fast as Gilmore Girls and, paired with stereotypical Jewish banter, it's really fast as lighting. Stylistically, it does seem like a femme version of Mad Men. In era only though. The sets and clothes are well done. The story though and the comedy, I have to say... the actual jokes she tells on stage were really poorly done. It's a herculean task though. Comedy from that era would have a hard time not feeling dated but the series's attempt to emulate it fails. Her story off stage is the main attraction anyway. There are a lot of convenient dodges like that she's a mother and that's barely in the equation. It would have been better if she didn't have any children. It would have made it a lot more believable. They kids are after thoughts and conveniently ignored with little to no consequences.Maybe they'll tackle that later. I honestly couldn't sit through the fast dialog and people trying to out clever one another. My wife is Jewish and thought the cliche's about Jewish life was pretty tedious.

Another story of the great woman behind the male fraud. This alone makes sure that no critic can give it a thumbs down for fear of being accused of the greatest crime of our time... "not being a feminist".
In truth, it's a boring story, with stereotypical characters and situations. Shouldn't Jewish NYers roll their eyes at the clichés spewed on screen about NY Jews? Plus, the jokes? What jokes? They fall flat. Stopped after two episodes.
