    Questions such as, "Isn’t this a bit silly?" and, "What was writer David Macpherson on when he picked up his pen?" do linger in the wings, but the direction is terrific, the editing superb and the performances top notch.

    This is middling in the grand scheme, but if you enjoy this particular genre (iso-horror?) there are plenty of worse ways to spend your time. The casting is excellent (superficially, the plethora of Scottish accents alone are worth the price of admission for me), John Strickland (Line of Duty, Big Love) does exactly what he needs to do as director, and there’s real suspense and real agony within the narrative.

    While there isn’t a ton of character development as The Rig starts, the acting is excellent, and it makes the tension that’s building on the Kinloch Bravo feel palpable.

    Macpherson doesn't reinvent the sci-horror wheel, save for a bit of eco-horror philosophizing here and there. But the show is effective in a nuts-and-bolts thriller way, with a cast of game Scotsmen (and a few others) grimly solving problems ranging from mutinies to prophecies to apocalyptic mechanical disasters.

    This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Watched it. Hoped each episode would improve the narrative. Exactly the opposite. Massive waste of talent. The final episode could have been written a bored first-year undergrad film studies major. Would have been laughable except for the disappointment. Compston's is the only character who manages to avoid truly idiotic dialogue. Maybe he smelled the stink and negotiated some distance between himself and this farce. The villain is, of course, the bad ol' human race: we've "not been listening" to a sentient form of microscopic life, hundreds of millions of years old, an achingly obvious metaphor for Gaia/Mother Earth, that, for some unclear reason might regard us as a threat?!? On one hand, according to the entirely muddled climax, we can kill it; except - oh wait! - we can't possibly kill it because it exists all around the planet; or we can convince it through mental telepathy that we mean it no harm(?!?) and we'll avert global disaster. The script lost focus from the start and added every climate alarmist anti-capitalist cliche imaginable to further erode any coherece. I've been eager to see a new Compston vehicle. This one was a train-wreck. He needs a new one as quickly as possible to put this sad mess we'll behind him.… Full Review »
