Have you, like me, spent a huge amount of money grabbing this or that game year after year? I stopped buying these games by 2010. I've played those games at my friends home, but whitout really much caring. I felt sort of relieved. By the time i stopped buying PES and FIFA releases, i realized these companies stopped making ANY real progress with the gameplay every new year. I realized these game where basically the same as the year before, with minor graphical improvements, major interface renewal (most of which in the worse), and minor random tweaks to the gameplay itself.
I grabbed this game, and the first impression is this: I'm playing pes 4 with some improvements, but definitely not enough for 10 FREAKING YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT AND MONEY GRABBING.
This game is the sequel to PES 4. It is fun to play with your friends, but the rest is complete garbage. Everything you loved in previous pes edition is there, but with basically NO enhancement. The physics is better, i concede that.
The gameplay is addictng. But is addicting like tobacco is: you know that you are hurting yourself, but the instant you score a goal, you kind of feel relieved of the stress you cumulate through the rest of the gameplay.
So if you want reasons for what i'm stating, i'll go deep on describing the gameplay.
This game is made to be played player vs player. that's it. If you need this for this and solely this reason, buy it! is a good game. But pes 6 is better. So you should probably get a copy of pes 6 instead, or last year fifa. Because trust me, except the up-tp-date teams (and not even all of em, since they didn't get the rights to use all of em for this year... so we are back to Mersey side Red and company, no german championship and so on...) the gameplay is the same, yhear after year. This is what we expected after pes 4, but is 10 YEARS LATER. Grab pes 6, is more enjoyable.
You want to play this game vs the AI? don't buy this game. Do yourself a favor, and keep your money in your bucket. The matches against AI are as KONAMI standard since the first PES on play station: the AI plays dumb so that you have your chanches to score, then suddenly buffs the stats of the adversary team for a determine amount of time. higer difficulty level means only this: buffs on adversary stats. This is a proven strategy for videogames company, since most of the players don't know or can't imagine how this is basically a scam. but if you see this, there's no way you could not feel cheated. 10 years of money and development, should have meant improvements over the AI. should have meant that the AI would not need to BEND the rules to achieve results. But that would have been meaning WORK! Something they want to avoid, i think. The time in which the ai EMULATES what a person can do given certain rules, won't probably ever come. People is keeping on throwing money at these companies, only to get the latest rosters, and not understanding they are being ripped off... and so these companies are selling THE SAME **** GAME AGAIN AND AGAIN.
All the modalities like my player, master league and so on, are **** Seriously, there have been tons of edition of pes with better and more understandable interfaces.
Tactics are nice, but have been implemented wrongly. The way you switch players is counter-intuitive, and gone is the feature to make fast switches. Playerr development? is there, but unles you write down the numbers for your players, you can't keep track of what your players are developing. So you decide this player is going to train on speed, but you don't know how much effective this training is, and unless you write down THE COMPLETE LIST OF STATS AND SKILLS OF HIM, you won't know what's going on about his developement.
Is this an enjoyable game after all? of course it is, as it where older PES games. But shall you buy a game which is a rippoff of a 10 years old game? of course not.… Expand

Rate 6 for the concept.
Should be a lot lower for the realization all around.

Yes the game feels easy mostOk, naval combat is arcade, not simulation. Yes the mechanics are the same as usual, with very few innovations. Yes the game feels easy most of the times since you can counter anything and so on...
Still this game has some magic, even with it's flaws.
AC titles have always been full of details and this one it's way the better by this criteria. Some missions are boring, and the achievement madness is still there.
Gameplay is good because it may totally be affected by one fundamental thing: the way you want to play it. You can win missions in a ton of ways, and you may enjoy the aspects of game the way you prefer. The game is incredibly polished, and the story BEHIND what's going on in the caribbean (if you don't know, every AC game is set on a double world, the present and the past) keeps you there wanting to get new material and unveil the facts you are still not aware of. In the game itself you'll find many many things to do, and most importantly, you'll see BEAUTY... Yes, i mean it. Frankly, i'm a huge fan of pirate themed stuff. I played every game on this theme, and while every each one had it's pro and cons, none had the thing that i enjoyed the most on this title: The feeling of being deep in the pirate era: the landscapes of the isles, are them big and covered with vegetation or loose low sand ones... the pirate crew singing pirate-ish songs (or not, while you can mute them with a screamed order!) while cruising through the waves of an late foggy dawn... Cruising your ship in a huge storm or through a placid clear sea... all these things are priceless.
If i where to compare this game with other titles, i really would say this game should be put in the league of Skyrim, while being HUGELY better. Since the latter is aswell a game for exploration, history and arcade combat, i think the comparison should be true. This game won't leave you disappointed if you are seeking for something beautiful to try. Still, if you already played earlyer AC games and are seeking for something dramatically new, then you may not find it. The work have been done in other directions, clearly.
For those arguing this is a bad port, you may not listen to them. Yes, this title may be ported, but you would not see that. This game is well ported, no bugs or annoying feature, and i won't say more.
MULTYPLAYER: the multyplayer mode it's quite chaotic. Since i've not tried that deeply i'll only say that there have clearly been done a lot of work around it. It has potential.
GAME CONS: While being an huge game full of content, as someone said sometimes it feels repetitive. You don't see this only in the scripted missions which are very similar most of the time, but also in the models. I believe that both the necessity to sell it for consoles and the vastness of things to be crafted and polished, led to a general lacking of variety in each one of the many aspects of the game (ship models for example).
GENERAL CONS: Game has it's downs too. For instance Ubisoft force you to start the game through his annoying "Uplay" service, (yet if you want to play it offline you can, but without the special content you may have bought; "hey ubisoft, i've payed for it, what do you mean i cant unlock it offline? are you mocking me?" I won't argue politics here, i will only say that i had to literally fight with the Uplay software to make it work, since it was not working in the beginning (some conflicts with system files). Also, the game is clearly full of buyable content, making you wonder how much of it would be in the game itself if this marketing trend where not so fully adopted by the company.
BIGGEST CON of the game, to me, was the general feeling that the lack of modding support, make this a ruined masterpiece. It's like you wonder if something like this game could be modded to be enriched, or converted into a simulation game... This game is so near to what i've always dreamed about, that it frustrates me so much. Why so few ships? Why fantasy ships? Why frigate on spanish army? Where are the Dutch, the French and the portuguese? Why wheren't you able to put accourate historically ships ingame? are you kidding, ship rams? Why can't i switch a captured ship with mine? Why so limited access to the ship itself? why only 5 things to trade? Why aren't there different types of cannonballs? You'll keep asking yourself these questions againg and againg.
but you will enjoy the game nonetheless.
9 out of 10 for me. (I am really surprised myself to have found a game so entertaining).… Expand

Have you ever experienced a roguelike? Me myself had in the past, but i couldn't get fun out of 'em, ever.
This game made me experience the fun behind losing. Because believe me: you are going to lose so many times, and still you'll need to try again. And not in the way "i have to beat this crap!", but instead more something "this one is going to be THE ONE!". And Evrytime in the end you think that you could have done better, so you try again. And you enjoy it, and stick to your tactics which will be proven good or bad only after many trials and errors.
Oh, and the developer is ok with modding, and encourages it. So in the future, the basic game-play of the game (which is brilliant: the fights are really enjoyable and fresh) will experience a more opening to modalities many people felt the game was lacking (i'm quite sure in the future there will be tons of mods on the "privateer" style).
Seriously, you want to buy this game. It's just tons of neverending fun. it's just like old arcades in which you kept on playing for the very sake of becoming better at them! Never felt this sensation since years!… Expand

The game is good... but nothing above this. The art is good, but still the animations are not very fluid. The puzzles are so so... i mean, i guess unbalanced. Sometimes, as for many games in this genre, i couldn't get the reason why something should merge with something other... Some other times the answer was way too easy. The ambient is well thought, still not innovative nor particularly enjoyable. The general feeling was of, sadly, boredom. i was repeating to myself over and over, "oh! one other clichè!".
The story it's a bit messy. I just feel the things where going on whitout really caring.
Also, i couldn't avoid a thought: The music is uninspired and ugly. If only music could be better, the game would have been better too.
I would have rated this 6, but i believe this game could still be enjoyed more by others, for the mere fact, for example, that influences of great games of the past are present. The main character and the kind of jokes, resembles those of Guybrush Threepwood and his legacy... Not quite at that level, but still: nice effort. Sometimes you smile... i mean, you don't really lough (except once, for me). You smile.

The game is crap, and i feel fooled by the developers which ruined the story and the ending i was hoping, but mostly i'm almost angry for all those big whoop reviews by the critics. This game is just half the value of mass effect 2, maybe less. Mass Effect 2 was actually a massive game, this one is just crap. It's like they made a parody out of it. Hey, it's not a completely bad game, it's still playable, but to me it's just mediocre in everything it tries to achieve: it's a bad fps, it's not an action game and it's not even remotely a decent rpg (every skill choice is irrilevant, the game is too easy, period). In fact Mass Effect 2 was better in everything except for the shooter part, which i repeat is still not worth the money in mass effect 3. Dumbest story ever, completely uninteresting characters, no choices to make, bad outdated graphics.... This game values 5. Everyone is giving less, my guess, because the irritating aspects mentioned above: undeserved good reviews by the critics, betrayed trust by the developers (i f*****g kept mass effect 2 installed just to import the character, only to realize how worthless this was). This is an absolute let down, just an unnecessary game, which probably will get too much attention for it's value.… Expand

But i may say one thing: no big improvements since tropico 3. So it isn't absolutely worth the full price. it introduces a few interesting things, like imports, a few more not so important nations, some interesting new building, and natural disasters too. But the campaign isn't that thrilling, very soon it becomes ad un-sharp and chaotic achievement party; they even introduced twitter and facebook plugins to share your results (as if someone care). I believe it's a little easier than tropico 3 too: i believe the title was subject to some minor rebalancing that eventually made the game more plain: everything could be solved with the same strategy. Even graphics looks a little messier than before. So why a 7 and not a 6? because the game is still fun. I've spent some funny hours, and i will spend more. I suggest you not to buy this until drops to something like 20 eurodollars or so (really, this is more a really good expansion than a new game)… Expand
