XDefiant is a confident shooter that's far more than a Call of Duty knockoff. The Tom Clancyverse crossovers are somewhat cringey, but if Ubisoft doubles down on the great gameplay, and the weird faction warfare, we'll keep coming back for months to come.
Compared to other FPS games, XDefiant offers limited initial content and significant balance issues, and even its most distinctive skill designs aren't particularly innovative. As a result, after a few hours of exploring different factions, game modes and maps, players may find it hard to stay motivated to grind for characters and weapons once the novelty wears off, leaving only a sense of endless fatigue.
If you are still wondering, the answer is no: XDefiant is not the COD killer that many expected. The new free to play from Ubisoft is a good shooter, which certainly has the ability to entertain for a few hours, but which will hardly be able to establish itself on the market due to some problems related to balance and progression. The current version of the game represents only a fair starting point, which will require constant commitment from the developers to improve on all fronts. In any case, this is not an impossible situation, given the precedents of the French software house.
Despite varied factions and excellent maps, XDefiant’s shootouts are let down by a lack of identity and sluggish weapon progression. Outside an emphasis on making skill-based matchmaking optional, the game plays like every shooter from the last decade, leaning into nostalgia over attempting a breakthrough. While technical pitfalls can be resolved with seasonal updates, XDefiant needs novelty to sustain a player base.
XDefiant is Ubisoft's failed attempt to fit into every genre. We have an outdated graphics engine and a cast of characters who add absolutely nothing to the game. The only positive aspect is that we can play multiple games before uninstalling it.
When you're willing to put time and effort into learning the gameflow, strategies, and being a good team player. This game is truly superb.
I went from struggling in the occasional lobby, to becoming MVP most games. The movement system is beautifully crafted, allowing you to sprint/slide/cancel, strafe jump and snake jump (changing direction while jumping).
The weapon attachment system seems very well balanced, offering a variety of choices when it comes to mobility, damage, rate of fire, accuracy etc. Almost all attachments have drawbacks, very reminiscent of COD Cold War, but when you finally strike the right balance for a certain game, you feel godly.
The gamemodes are relatively limited as of me writing this review, but enough variety to keep you occupied as the game has literally just released and is in 'preseason' mode.
Graphically stunning, couldn't ask for much more. Clean.
Audio design is slightly strange in parts, sound outside your immediate vicinity seem to have a muffled mono filter on it, but that strangely seems to help distinguish what's around you. It becomes easier to pinpoint enemies closer to you because your headset isn't filled with excessive gunfire and explosions.
I believe if more people gambled on this game, dedicated a bit of time to it, they would enjoy it as much as I have. Never going to kill the propaganda machine that is COD, but hopefully has an audience big enough over time to establish itself!
Oh and did I mention, it's FREE?!?!
Weird mouse stutter when aiming left/right searched for a fix can't find a working fix anywhere. really makes the game unplayable. tried using my xbox controller and the stutter problems were gone. as soon as I switch back to M&K I have the stutter in my mouse again.
SummaryXDefiant is a free-to-play, fast-paced arena shooter that combines intense gunplay with personalized loadouts and specialized factions, as teams of gunfighters battle for domination.
