It’s an immersive, transporting, intriguing, fully-realized world that we can enjoy spending time in without rating against our ideas of which characters should “win” in that world. I don’t know how this story plays out but for now I’m content to bask in the spice glow.
This Dune dwarfs most contemporary sci-fi in its scope and execution, ably juggling multiple characters and settings so that it matches the sprawling drama of the original tome.
I strive to minimize my bias by giving a fair rating on each part of the movie. If you do not prefer sci-fi or this style of movies, then I still believe you should give a fair rating, considering views from others. I also minimize my bias from political views, or anything to do with their race, gender, etc.. (unless nessassary from the context of the movie). | Summarised Rating: 49/50 (98%) (10/10) |
DIRECTING: 10/10
The directing was perfect. Denis Villeneuve really knew what he was doing. He understood the mistakes of the previous adaption and improved every part of it. Every scene felt valuable and important.
| GENRE RESEBLANCE: 10/10 (How good it is as a sci-fi movie)
Has to be one of, if not the best science fiction movie I have ever watched. The sound design was captivating and the atmosphere was perfect. The atmosphere of the movie is what makes it so good.
| ACTING: 4.5/5
The cast was amazing. Each one fit their role perfectly. Only slight complaint I have was the protagonist seemed a bit "tired" at times. I have heard his acting improved significantly in Part Two though.
| ENVIORMENT & CGI: 5/5
Ahead of its time; most likely the BEST cgi I have seen in a while. Everything seems so perfect and fitting of the story without it being too over the top. Feels "realistic" for its plot.
| CINEMATOGRAPHY: 5/5
Don't get me started on this. The cinematography was perfectly balanced and well paced. The angles were perfect. Denis Villeneuve had an interview where he elaborated more.
| PACING: 9.5/10 (combined short term pacing + long term rating)
Some may say the movie felt "slow", but that's because they don't value the scenes. Each scene has importance, which each slowly revealing more about the plot. Only reason -0.5 points is because of the long term pacing, but even then there was too much plot to uncover for one movie, hence, why there is a part two.
| SCORE: 5/5
Hans Zimmer went above and beyond. The music was captivating and alien without it straying far from what fits the movie. Dune is a sci-fi movie, requiring sci-fi scores. Hans Zimmer also had his own interview explaining the process and reasoning behind his production.
| ADAPTATION: N/A
I have not read the book yet, so I can not give a fair rating on this one. However, I have heard many reviews saying how it was adapted well. I can not take those ratings for granted before I have read the book myself, to avoid bias.
| SUMMARY: This movie is a perfect example of what a sci-fi movie should be. Denis Villeneuve knew what he was working with, and that is one of the reasons why this movie is so astounding, in my oppinion. Role model for future sci-fi movies.
There’s a lot going on here — a quasi-biblical space opera, part Lawrence of Arabia and part mobster movie — and spreading it out over two movies has allowed [Villaneuve] to take his time with the story and tell it richly, and without rushing
Being the hero of the story has never looked so poisoned, and that alone is thrilling enough to hope Villeneuve gets to make part two of this impressively batshit venture.
Has Denis Villeneuve succeeded where others – most notably Alejandro Jodorowsky – have floundered? Given the extensive runtime, it’s impossible not to think of Chinese premier Zhou Enlai’s alleged assessment of the French revolution: “Too early to say.”
I loved it. The world building, the music score (best of all time?) the brutalism, the acting, the epic scale, the action and above everything else, the athmosphere! This is how it's done, this is science fiction for adults! An absolute masterpiece. I had no problem with the ending, not more than I had with The Fellowship of the Ring ending, when you know it's the first part of a series.
Dune part 1 is a visually stunning film but as a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune novel the rest leaves a lot to be desired. One of the biggest missteps Villeneuve’s Dune makes is removing what is an essential and arguably central part of the entire saga: religion. Herbert’s Dune provided commentary on many things but central to most of it was the danger of mixing Imperialism(nationalism) and religion. Without religion many aspects lose their intended purpose! The Bene Gesserit falls flat because it is not a political organ, it manages civilizations through religion. Paul’s journey becomes no more than a bare bones hero’s journey rather than a tightrope walk between prophecy, ambition and destiny. The Fremen suffer most of all; without the Islamic influence and culture there is nothing larger tying them together outside of being “oppressed” which in the novel no Freman would ever say. Due to the Freman’s ability to live in the deep desert makes them impossible to oppress even by Harkonens. In this film the Fremen become little more than a plot device to propel Paul. I’m honestly surprised more people are not offended by this.
There is another problem more subtle than all that: Paul is not a hero and the Atredies are not noble. Leto’s ambition blinded him to the emperor’s plot, his plan revolves around using the Fremen as a disposable army to achieve his own political ambition(overthrowing the emperor via populism), Paul manipulated the Fremen with superstition and uses them to enact vengeance to satisfy his own ambition(this is his inevitable destiny). The Atredies are a reflection of the Harkonens, one could argue that the Harkonens are less vile simply due to being honest about their ambition. Like the Harkonens the Atredies serve only themselves the difference is the Atredies, having the larger ambition, disguise this ambition as noble. It’s a cold war commentary after all, Russia and the US had and have similar ambitions however the US is wise enough to disguise them.
I love the David Lynch Movie from the 80ties.
What I love about this movie is the CGI.
What turned me off were the changes made to adapt this movie to 2021. By changing a few characters in opposition on how they were described in the books or in former movies.
I was saddened about how slow the movie was. I could not continue watching this movie. After 20 minutes, I'm done. Really happy I didn't spent any money on this. Slow, boring, and utterly long. The same with the Napoleon movie. That was around 3 hours or so and the last half an hour was just too much. Oppenheimer last one hour too long. 3 hour movie is only a King Kong material, where action and story is in every second. This is slow and boring.
