The new direction Castlevania has taken can be liked or not, and we personally fall into the latter category, but Mirror of Fate is nonetheless a very good, albeit not perfect, action game for 3DS. If only it was devoid of that tedious quick time events.

Mirror of Fate is a good game, but it can disappoint fans used to the Metroidvania formula.

Despite the niggles and lack of meaningful exploration, Mirror of Fate is still quite enjoyable. [May 2013, p.77]

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate is stupid in a good way and robust enough to be an enjoyable challenge. While the boss battles go on a bit too long and the plot is bonkers, it’s a good use of a platforming style often forgotten.

All things considered, Mirror of Fate is still a decent game, one that is merely injured by some elements of poor design. It’s a unique approach to rebooting a franchise, one that doesn’t seek to reestablish the rules, but instead utilize them as a guide, thus allowing this new version to travel its own direction.

Although Mirror of Fate doesn't live up to its full potential, it often comes close. I can see the beginnings of a fantastic new-school Castlevania experience trying hard to emerge here, and with just a little more polish and precision, MercurySteam would have turned out a solid winner. It's not yet fully evolved, but the work done here is still a valid step towards the future state of this ever-changing series.

Τranslating Lords of Shadow into a side-scrolling experience with Mirror of Fate was a successful experiment, though its shortcomings in some areas prevent it from achieving perfection. Even so, it's definitely worth playing.

In trying to distance itself a little bit from the formula that 2D Metroidvanias have now stuck to for the past 15 years, Mirror of Fate succeeded in most areas but falls a little bit too short in others.

There's nothing inherently wrong with linearity here; Mirror of Fate is just lacking an easily discernible big picture, and often conflates errand-running for intricacy. It's also unevenly paced, with all the solid puzzles sedimenting in the game's middle.

The game holds me down with its vampire-like claws from the start and all the way until the end when the credits roll. But it never manages to sink its teeth into me and fully win me over to the other side. Afterwards, I break free without any trouble and wander out into the sunlight, while leaving the game in the darkness as I get ready for my next adventure with something else.

The Nintendo 3DS seems to be struggling of fully perform all of the great ideas of the latest Castlevania adventure. Still, this is highly recommended for all fans of the series.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate is an average action game, far from the feeling of its predecessor.

Mirror of Fate is a good game. Take Lords of Shadow, cut the playing time in half, limit the third dimension to an optical illusion and what remains is an action adventure game that plays like a dream. The only real concession that was made is a story that hardly adds anything, which makes this feel more like a spin-off. That's a shame, because it was supposed to be the link between Lords of Shadow and LoS 2.

Mirror of Fate is basically a 2D God of War, so if you dig platformers with decent combat mechanics, you’ll most likely enjoy it.

Mirror of Fate is not your typical handheld Castlevania adventure: with a more predictable map exploration and a weapon and magic variety reduced to its lowest terms, it sets itself as a portable version of the Lords of Shadow saga. Mercury Steam has put some distance between what Konami and Igarashi achieved in the past ten+ years: this is a somewhat good action/fighting game, but a less-then-stellar Castlevania experience, plagued by a questionable frame rate.

These complaints ultimately make Castlevania: Lords of Shadow- Mirror of Fate disposable and just short of being considered a classic, but so long as you except the game for what it is, you'll most likely have a zombie-whipping good time.

Mirror of Fate is a fun and occasionally challenging action game with successful elements and an unfortunate, but small, selection of poor design choices.

With Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate MercurySteams follows its own way of thinking about the epic Konami franchise. The developers did a good job in capturing Castlevania’s soul, but the game’s soundtrack and level design aren’t good enough to stand a chance against the other portable episodes of the series. It’s still a good and entertaining game, anyway.
  19. Purists will be pleased, then, with Mirror of Fate for the Nintendo 3DS. Although excessively subtitled, it’s a return to the series’ two-dimensional side-scrolling roots, which is both a good and a bad thing. While the exploration and clever puzzle-solving is front and centre again, so too is an unfortunate side effect – a healthy dose of backtracking.

Much like its title, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow — Mirror of Fate plays with multiple concepts attempting to garner widespread appeal, but would be better suited focusing on just one.

Three times the protagonists gives you three times the number of toys and an engaging, if thoroughly convoluted, story, but it’s not without cost. What Simon, Trevor and Alucard give to the mechanics and narrative they take from its flow: you still feel gated, even when you’ve got all the gear.

While Mirror of Fate might willingly fumble the classic structure somewhat, it's still got a touch of that familiar vampire-hunting charm to it - a charm that comes to the rescue whenever the developer's invention or polish fall short.

The problem with Mirror of fate is not related to the discontinuity with Igarashi's Castlevania, which is not a bad thing. But average level design, underdeveloped combat system and a general lack of refinement makes this game an acceptable but surely not unforgettable entry on the series.

Mirror of Fate leaves a poor first impression, but the game gradually becomes more enjoyable as you move through it. The game takes time out to puzzle near the halfway point for a welcome change of pace, and has its best moments coming at the end of the game, which you can reach in around ten hours.

It feels like an odd mesh of classic Castlevania, Symphony of the Night, and Lords of Shadow, and like any jack of all trades, it masters none of these elements.

Excessive button-mashing, constant quick-time events, drawn-out battles, an awkward balance between offering exploration while also being linear—those are elements that need some real rethinking and reworking if they’re to exist in upcoming portable chapters of Castlevania, or they’re elements that need to simply not exist at all.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate is a game that tries to take the best of both new and old Castlevania but ultimately comes up short all round.

Castlevania's debut on Nintendo 3DS does a lot of things different. With big changes to the combat system, 3D graphics and heavily reduced exploration, hardcore fans of the series might be disappointed. For someone who just wants a different action adventure it's not a bad game though.

What remains is a passable action game over the course of all of its four character-arcs. It's a shame that the exploration just isn't where it needs to be, even if Mercury Steam manages to marry its new fiction with the history of the series. Had this come out between Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia, people would have forgotten about it by now. Still, Ecclesia is for years old by now, and the fans really long for a new Castlevania in the classic style. If you're one of them, have a look into this mirror. It's got some ugly cracks in it, but you might still like some of what you see.

Disappointing. On its own the game is mediocre with a missed opportunity in character variety, short time to completion, and only a small amount of enemies. Compared to past games this is a downright disaster.

    This game is AMAZING..
One of the best looking 3DS game and its a very good mix of OLD eps like Castlevania 3 or 4 and LOS, with some
    Metroidvania features.
Its really challenging, you will die a lot before you learn how to beat the ennemies and the QTE are not over-intruisive. The story is ok, but there is a lips synch issue on the cut scene..
If you ONLY played the Metroidvania, maybe you will not like it on first attempt(you will if you get over what you except of such an episode)

Anyway, it's a shame to not at least try this Castlevania before judging it, you will probably miss on of the good exclusive title in 3DS.

I'll try to be simple: i) graphics: 9.5 ii) sound: 9 iii) script: 8 iv) art (if the game has a soul): 10 Castlevania at its best. The game resembles the NES and SNES Castlevanias (in a Lords of Shadows approach, of course). If you have a 3DS, don't miss this excelent game! Full Review »
