It may not be the near-perfect masterpiece I consider Undertale to be, but it successfully holds onto much of what made the first game great while making adjustments and finding its own place as well.
While Undertale is great both as a comedy and a tragedy, Deltarune is good for some laughs but – so far – doesn’t move players otherwise. [13/2018, p.48]
For something that is suppose to be a demo of sorts, this game certainly didn't feel like it. While short, Deltarune provides just enough characterization, plot, and jokes that really make it feel like a full game. Yet it was given out for free and is absolutely worth playing. While most early demos provide a prove of concept, Deltarune feels more like a prologue to something bigger, and a lot of this is felt through out the game as we continue to hear echos of legends, are introduced to a whole new town/world, and even given character growth between certain characters. I certainly don't want to give too much away given how short this game is, but the fact that the first game, Undertale, was given such a defined choice system and this game wasn't; makes for a lot of interesting themes to contrast the two. No matter what you say or do everything will happen in a similar fashion. Not to say that it undermines character growth, but it certainly does make replays or watches a bit interesting in how a character reacts to something yet still land relatively close to the same **** three main characters all have interesting dynamics with each other, but only Susie and Ralsei have any growth. There is thankfully a huge supporting cast though both during the game and near the end that really make for some interesting thoughts considering the way Deltarune ends. The combat system not only has a mixture of Paper Mario and Undertale mechanics, but make itself feel different than either one. While there isn't a lot of boss battles here, the ones that were certainly show what the main game will be about and thankfully have that same Undertale charm along with providing a traditional JRPG challenge.Really though this game is free and made by Toby Fox. It's full of charm, witty, great game and character design, and even better music. If you're not convinced to play it after all the raving and hooting than it's probably just not a game for you and that's fine.
You sly Fox, you, you’ve gone and delivered an excellent game, and all we had to do was download it (and enter into a tacit agreement not to spoil anything for 24 hours, which many of us promptly ignored).
Gameplay: 7/10
Story: 7/10
Graphics: 7/10
OST: 7/10
Overall a fun game with fun gameplay, a decent story, pretty nice graphics and a fine OST. Not verylong though and definetly not as good as UNDERTALE.
Its a good game. But is too short, the gameplay just became fun in the final boss, when you can control Kris, Susie and Ralsei, poor characters exploit and the humor is boring. On the other hand hand, it has a kick-ass OST, and, honestly, this is my favourite of all toby fox's games, The pixel art is beautifull and there characters like Lancer, that are FUN. nothing else, just fun. I like the game, but compared to chapter 2 and undertale, is just boring.
it's cool in some ways, but i feel like the majority of the gameplay is just me pressing A and B frantically trying to get the dialogue to proceed at some semblance of a reasonable pace. the game pauses just about every 2 steps to make you do this, and it happens over, and over, and over. just give me a cutscene if you have to add this much talking. i don't even mind the dialogue itself, it's often cute and funny, it's the fact that i need to press these buttons constantly, and there's no options for increasing the text speed or automatically proceeding through these portions.
the bullet hell aspects are cool enough, and implementing them into the overworld instead of just the battle sequences is a cool development, but abysmally slow walking and running speed just make them feel a whole lot less fun. it feels like this game is a "pressing a simulator" with a few action sequences peppered in, and i'd much rather just watch a cinematic than play this in it's current state. from what im seeing, chapter 2 is more of the same and/or worse.
the dev(s) of this series have a lot of heart, but the quality of life features in this game are nonexistent to backwards. when it's a joke for them to be that way, i love it. when it's a constantly present slog of discussions that i legitimately want to read, but which are so badly implemented that they end up being more frustrating than interesting, then it's pretty hard for me to give this a good rating even if i loved undertale and i want more from this studio.
nobody came here to play a graphic novel, and if this were a graphic novel it would still have terrible UI.
This was boring.
You just go in a straight line, the story is like any kids cartoon for man-children, the action has no depth.
This barely counts as an "RPG".
