What happens when you take the hard-core, precision-based fighting of Guilty Gear and mix it with the multitiered four-player craziness of "Super Smash Bros."? You get Guilty Gear Dust Strikers for the DS. [Jun 2006, p.85]
  2. 70
Despite the changes made to simplify Dust Strikers' core fighting engine, the combo system is surprisingly comprehensive.
  3. DS owners are advised to take care if they are contemplating purchasing this odd take of the Guilty Gear franchise, as besides the series' moniker, this is definitely not the same game that you are used to playing.

It's just too mentally tricky, with all the up and down between screens, for genuinely enjoyable gameplay, but it's a must-have for any serious fans of the series. [Oct 2006, p.67]
  5. An extremely cool game that is full of some really amazing innovations, but ultimately ends up a victim of its own creativity.
  6. I enjoyed it more than i thought, although it's not that deep, it's still really fun as a pick-up-and-play fighting game. Plus the RK Factory is lots of fun to play around with.

Of course, there are a number of much better multiplayer titles on the DS, but it's something. [May 2006, p.110]

It's too bad that Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers had to sacrifice some of its progenitors strongest features to enact new and engaging gameplay changes because the new enhancements for Dust Strikers really do add something new to the franchise, however; judging the entire game as a whole leaves it wanting.
  9. 60
The gameplay is sloppy and basic, the characters suffer from less of an animation budget on the smaller system, and the overall feel just isn’t worthy of the Guilty Gear name.
  10. 60
Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers is not the essential handheld fighting experience, and doesn't really deserve to be. Its control quirks and lack of anything in terms of long-term entertainment outside of the multiplayer fail to make this a must-buy.
  11. Just a hodgepodge of a game that is marred by its overly ambitious efforts to be something unique.
  12. While I can understand the developers change up the formula to adjust to a new platform with its own unique features, the execution of this is something less the desired.
  13. Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers is something that should've been a no-brainer. Sadly, with the addition of party elements and lack of unlockables, the game just doesn't live up to its predecessors.
  14. 60
With tasty graphics and a finely-tuned battle engine, Dust Strikers is another quality entry into the Guilty Gear series that while not offering anything new (or better) than other DS fighting games, is still an enjoyable game.
  15. 60
Sadly, Strikers’ almost schizophrenic nature prevents it from greatness. Had the developers chosen to keep the game in the style of previous Gear titles, they would have done just fine.
  16. Fans will be happy with its fairly large roster of classic Guilty Gear characters, but gamers savvy with Jump Superstars and Bleach DS may not be impressed.
  17. The inclusion of the power-ups severely cheapens the game, changing it from a competitive fighting game into a wannabe party title.
  18. Dust Strikers defies convention for the worse, resulting in an awkward and frustrating fighting game.
  19. Dust Strikers could’ve been a fun game, but the lack of depth and limited replay value keep it from being a must-own.

The traditional Guilty Gear gameplay just doesn’t translate that well to the arena style of play: most of the moves would be better suited to a straight one-on-one fight. [Nov 2007, p.120]

Even ignoring the fact that it clearly can't play like a regular GG game due to the 4-player and multi-tiered stages, it doesn't even play well as a party brawler. Heck, Guilty Gear Advance was a much more faithful adaptation of the series than this. If you want to play GG, buy a main game from the series (e.g. not DS or Isuka). If you want a fun party brawler, buy Jump Ultimate Stars. Full Review »
