    The variety in gameplay that helped prevent Samantha Swift from being a total disappointment is definitely back in full force for Midnight Mysteries, tweaked to make the adventure far more enjoyable and supported by enough extra content and challenge to actually help it last more than two hours.

    Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allan Poe Conspiracy presents a decent seek-and-find adventure with an enveloping storyline, but it doesn't take you into enough of Poe's stories to provide as enveloping an experience as it could.

    The Edgar Allan Poe Conspiracy may interest diehard fans of the hidden objects genre, but a lack of puzzle variety is an awful turnoff.

    Fans of Edgar Allan Poe or those who like a "twist" to historical fact might find Midnight Mysteries to their liking, but it's hard to recommend the game to anyone else.

    In a nutshell: There is nothing spectacular about this game. Don't waste your money (or if you insist on playing anyway, DO NOT buy this game at full price because you will regret it.) You are not missing anything. Being an avid fan of hidden object and point-and-click mystery games, I purchased the entire Midnight Mysteries pack during Steam's 2012 Halloween sale. I'd never heard of this particular series, but the trailer looked interesting, the price was good, and I was going stir-crazy from unemployment. So, wins all around. --The Good--
    Well, the music was nice, and the basic premise of the game--explore Edgar Allan Poe's stories to uncover a larger mystery--is a good one. And the graphics aren't terrible. --The Bad--
    -You are led from one scene to the next in an orderly and direct fashion; there is no freedom to move or explore on your own. -There are maybe five puzzles in the entire game and they are incredibly easy to figure out. There is not challenge.
    -You basically find the same handful of items in each scene. Oh! Here's a fun drinking game: drink every time you are asked to find a map that doesn't look like a map, or a bucket, pair of scissors, playing card, or any kind of digging tool. -It took me only 2 hours and 30 minutes to finish this game. That's not terrible for a game like this, but I was expecting it to be a little longer. --The Ugly--
    -Biggest complaint: The story doesn't make sense. This is a murder mystery, right? The clues you find are supposed to, logically, lead you to form some sort of conclusion by the end. Not in this game. Motives are never clarified, merely hinted at; I never felt like I knew the whole story. Furthermore....
    -....your notebook is pointless. Don't bother with it. A GOOD mystery game keeps track of all the clues you uncover, summarizes the story, offers ideas about your next course of action based on the clues you've found, and provides extra details to foster an understanding of the situation. Not in this game. Each time I felt confused about the story--for example, when I wanted to know who a suspect was and his/her motivation for violence--I would check the journal and find nothing. NOTHING. There is no elaboration on clues, no backgrounds on suspects, no helpful little notes, no review of the clues I'd already found. Just nothing! It was highly frustrating. -You don't get to inspect your clues, and this is where I felt like I missed an integral part of the story. At one point, you have to find and reassemble the pieces of a letter. No challenge there. I can tell by the snippets of handwriting that this is an important piece of information. As soon as I'm done assembling the letter, the handwriting fades and the words "Mr. ______ had me killed!!" appear in big red letters at the bottom of the page. Wait, what??? Okay, he had you killed, but WHY???? But the letter disappears and you never get to read it or see it again. Mr. ______'s motivation for killing the author of the letter is not revealed and, unfortunately, understanding this is the foundation for understanding the rest of the story.

    --Conclusion--
    All that being said, the other games in this series look INFINITELY better. They even have achievements on Steam. Just don't worry about playing this one.    … Expand
