  1. In multiplayer mode Spore: Hero Arena is a really fascinating action game. Also in the single player mode it's better than average!
  2. A nice game, especially if you're fond of customization and online play, but don't expect anything new or particularly interesting.
  3. Although the result of the game is decent, it is a pity they had not offered more variety in options to the player, a thing which would have improved the overall game experience, and extend the life of the game.
  4. 60
The Spore concept is a difficult one to transfer well to weaker hardware, but thankfully EA have not tried to shoehorn in anything unnecessary to a good gaming experience.
  5. The main problem with Spore Hero Arena isn't that the detail of your creature is lost in a haze of pixels, but that the whole game is rather dull. [Winter 2009, p.70]
  6. Spore Hero Arena's premise of designing creatures for the purpose of arena fighting is a good one, but the execution is a bit off here. The endless series of unexciting tasks brings the game down and often makes it feel like a cash-in.
  7. Though spawning new Spores is as fun as ever, you're left to wonder, "Well, then what?" [Nov 2009, p.88]
  8. When all is said and done, Spore Hero Arena just fails to keep one's attention.
  9. 38
Spore Hero Arena, however, doesn't have many redeeming features at all. Yes, it attempts a 3D creature creator, but it's meaningless when you consider the game where it's been placed. Poor adventuring and even worse fighting can't save this game.
  10. Spore Heroes Arena is a very uninspiring title that has a repetitive fighting engine and tedious exploration. It definitely does not live up to the Spore brand.

I don't know what it would take to make a game of Spore's scope on the DS, but I know it requires an entirely different approach than the lamentably simplistic Spore Hero Arena.
