    A super repetitive punch-and-kick fest.
  2. A charming tale that's probably not worth playing through. The dated gameplay and stiff controls just don't do the tongue-in-cheek storytelling justice. Most players will become quickly bored with this title, though there may be enough allure in the setting for genre veterans to suffer through the action.
  3. I wanted to love Tokyo Beat Down, but in the end there wasn't enough there to win me over. The game is certainly packed with charm and style, but holes in the control and some balance issues hold it back.
  4. If the gameplay had more to recommend it, this would be a must-play on the DS. As it is, it’s an amusing if uninspired romp that should give more than its share of belly laughs to the beat ‘em up ­faithful.

  8. It’s hard to tell whether Tokyo Beat Down is a nostalgic parody of a classic genre, or a hack-job beat-‘em-up with a satirical sheen of machismo to hide the blemishes. Either way, it doesn’t matter when the sloppy fighting mechanics and flavorless style would have been hard-pressed to glean a second quarter back in the arcade heydays.

  11. Here is a little math to help recap the review: decent graphics - bad controls - bad story line - bad music = a crappy game. Even if you are a fan of this type of game; I would recommend looking elsewhere for your next title.

When I got Tokyo Beat Down, I was really hoping for a great beat-'em-up experience translated into the third dimension, similar to how adventure games and one-on-one fighting games have transitioned into 3D. Unfortunately Tokyo Beat Down falls short of that, and if I want a beat-'em-up I'm better off putting my GBA copy of Final Fight One into my Nintendo DS.

    In theory, the world needs another beat-'em-up game, however, the world doesn't need Tokyo Beat Down. Anytime spent with Beat Down will feel more like a novelty rather than something you have to experience.

  17. If you absolutely must have a new brawler, then this game is perfectly functional, but it falls short in overall quality.
  18. Tokyo Beat Down isn't a great game. It isn't really even that good of a game. But fans of similar games will appreciate what the Beast Cops have to offer, and even gamers lukewarm on brawlers will find some merit in Tokyo Beat Down alongside its painfully unfair and tedious moments.

    With such a distinct lack of understanding of the genre and almost hateful disregard for the player's enjoyment, the biggest crime going down in Tokyo, it seems, is a simple lack of respect.

    Even with the slightly below-average graphics, even with the blatantly swiped mechanics, even with the simplistic punch-kick-repeat gameplay, I still want to recommend Tokyo Beat Down. As with Operation Darkness, the title's story and writing are so different and original that I couldn't help but enjoy the game.

    Tokyo Beat Down is the definition of quirky. The narrow appeal of both the outlandish storyline and repetitive gameplay will appeal to such a limited audience it is no wonder that Atlus is the one publishing it.
