Like the original BUILD-era game, it's a top-notch shooter. Torus really emulated the way Duke's action looked and felt back then, even including his ability to look up and down (a GBA shooter first!) and jump.
This game has tons of action, blasting away at alien scum, and won't get beaten in the course of a couple of hours. It's definitely one of the deeper ones out there.
It wasn't enough to just look good, Duke Nukem Advance had to play well too. All thanks to the Southpaw engine I suppose. This isn't just a port of assets from Duke Nukem 3D, it features a whole new campaign designed from the ground up for the GBA. With a wide array of levels spanning the globe and then some, featuring signature combat, all new secrets and engaging puzzles.
Controls are intuitive and accessible, making the most out of the limited inputs. Boss battles are great and there are plenty of weapons, some are even unique like the Shrink Ray and Freeze Thrower. You'll never feel too frustrated with the combat once you get the hang of things.
Textures, draw distance and frame rate go above and beyond for the native hardware, not to mention the destruction effects and explosions. Music is lacking in game but audio is crisp otherwise and features many of Dukes infamous one liners.
Verdict.
I can recommend playing through this even in 2017, at least once, should you have the tolerance for it there is a fun campaign on offer. I'll still contend, that this and Doom 2 are timeless, stunning ports of their respective classics for the GBA (although Duke is more a new entry than port) - the only problem is, if you plan on blowing up the native image elsewhere than the GBA itself you might find them visually hard to acclimate to given the original resolution and intended dimensions.
Who would have thought that the GBA would be the system behind one of the best handheld/portable FPS games out there? With the exception of the toned down sexuality (no strippers littering the levels), everything you love and expect with old-school Duke Nukem games can be found here. It's funny, has great action, and awesome level design. It even controls wonderfully. I don't know what else to say other than it's a real Duke Nukem game for you GBA! It's incredibly impressive and I believe a must play.
Less pixelization, better control, smoother animation, better art, and lots of aliens and pigs in uniform to turn into mounds of bloody pork. [Oct 2002, p.86]
Not-too-bright enemies coupled with garish graphics are both a lesson in frustration and an eyesore. It takes a lot of the fun out of blasting a floating brain type when the aforementioned baddie looks more like a smudge than a foe.
Duke makes it to Nintendo's handheld with Duke-isms largely intact, but the levels are simplified and sprites turn into a jumble of blocky pixels if they get too close. Not a bad attempt considering the hardware limitations but Doom made the transition far more intact.
Aunque me parece bastante interesante que esto este en la GBA junto con un divertido modo multijugador, las caídas de FPS, la mala calidad del sonido, los controles y el tamaño de los mapas hacen que este juego sea una catástrofe total.
SummaryAlien scientists have taken control of the top-secret Area 51 military base, and are plotting to overthrow Earth! But not if Duke can stop them. Armed with alien-busting weapons, his kick-butt attitude, and using the aliens' own transporters, Duke takes the battle to four unique locations around the world. Oh, and rescues a few babes al...
