Battle of the Bulge is a must-have for anyone with an interest in historical wargaming. It's only flaws are limited single-player replayability and the fact that it is so easy to start playing that some players may jump in expecting a Risk-like game, only to become frustrated when the game's nuances assert themselves.

It's simply a great game. You don't have to know anything special about tanks, or river crossings, or the Luftwaffe. Everything in the game is easily explained: these units move fast, these roads speed movement, these woods impede attackers.

The decision by the team behind Battle of the Bulge to start with board game mechanics but implement them specifically for the platform has paid off handsomely. The result is an outstanding title that makes full use of its digital capabilities to smooth over complexity, deliver top-notch multimedia presentation and make an approachable-yet-compelling strategy game.

Change the course of history with this sleek and accesible turn-based strategy game.

A hugely enjoyable strategy game, and if you've no interest in the history I'm sure it's possible to appreciate it as just that. But the way in which it frames its source absolutely enraptured me, reawakening a long-dormant interest and sparking a search for countless other takes on the battle and its wider context - many of which, it has to be said, didn't come close.

I would have been sold on Battle of the Bulge as a regular PC wargame, but the fact that it is an iPad only release and a brilliant one at that makes it all the sweeter as an iOS gamer.

Rejoice, hobby generals: Battle of the Bulge is the first strategy highlight of the year. Alongside Ravenmark this is the best you can get in turn based strategy for your iPad.

For a modern warfare game, Bulge sacrifices rule complexity for accessibility. This means it can be mastered after a few games.

Simple and easy going strategy game has a good board game feeling: easy to learn, harder to master. Battle of Bulge works well on a touch screen too, thanks to excellent user interface. The main flaw is that it is quite expensive and has only one map to play with. [March 2013]

I probably should berate Battle of the Bulge for having only one map, but I can’t bring myself to do it. By focusing on just this scenario, Shenandoah Studio honed it to almost perfection. Plus, $9,99 for a game that will captivate you for 3-4 hours straight is, I think, a good deal.

Battle of the Bulge is as cold, brutal, and unforgiving as the titular conflict, but it's also one of the top choices for hardcore iPad strategists.
