Many ports turn out to be dumbed-down, stripped-of-spirit versions of the console versions. Luckily, XCOM is different. It is excellent.

The conversion for iPad of XCOM is an extremely successful work: a great opportunity for Apple users who have not yet played the masterpiece from Firaxis.

Everything that we knew about the console version has been brought over with love, affection and a true knowledge of how to use the touch-screen, as well as the sheer power of the iPad, to its absolute potential...XCOM: Enemy Unknown isn’t just one of the best iPad games available, it’s one of the best games available, full stop.

It’s surely missing some of the finer details from the PC and console versions, but now thanks to 2K and Firaxis, we can save mankind from alien annihilation, even when on the toilet.

It jumps flawlessly onto iOS and continues to offer the great experience we all know.

It’s not a cheap app, but it’s a great game! The basic gameplay is identical to the game on PC and consoles, except that you use the touch screen. To do each action you’ll need to press a button on the screen (as opposed to double-tapping). I found this to be an excellent idea because you do not want to lose a soldier to an errant double-tap.
  7. A game that looks very nearly as good as did on my Xbox 360 and in some ways plays even better, thanks in large part to intuitive touch screen controls that prove a fine fit for the game’s turn-based action.

Quite possibly the best game on the App Store. Its twenty dollar price tag may seem a bit high, but the amount of detail and polish makes it easily worth the price.

Even so, the fact remains that XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a fantastic strategy game, and one of the best and most robust available on iOS.

X-Com: Enemy Unknown controls perfectly on the iPad. The touch controls for the camera, the soldiers, and choosing commands are all intuitively designed and responsive.

We know it’s pricey, but if you like playing strategy titles on the go, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is one of the best and deepest mobile games available on the App Store. The fate of the world is in your hands, Commander. What are you going to do?

Anyway, Enemy Unknown is a fantastic, superbly designed strategy game that hits a ton of different notes and nails all of them. If you're into strategy games, give this a go. It'll blow you away, and you'll probably walk away with a few stories to tell.

Not only is XCOM: Enemy Unknown one of 2012s best strategy games, it's also one of the most faithful iOS ports I've ever seen.

Casual fans might balk at the huge download or $20 price tag, but for serious gamers and strategy fans, the lure of a near-perfect portable XCOM may be irresistible.

XCOM's battles are tense and rewarding, and are married to a clever base-building meta-game. All this, in a solid and eminently playable iOS port.

Ultimately, this mobile edition of XCOM: Enemy Unknown is an almost flawless port of one of last year's finest games. If it's a truism that you get what you pay for in life, then the depth, satisfying gameplay, replay value, and challenge on offer here more than adequately answer any questions about that price.
