  • Summary: A Vampyre Story is the creation of Bill Tiller and his studio Autumn Moon Entertainment. A former employee of Lucas Arts, Tiller won himself a place in the hearts of adventure fans through his work on titles such as Steven Spielberg's "The Dig," the whip-cracking "Indiana Jones," and the legendary "The Curse of Monkey Island." The game tells the tale of the beautiful, gifted opera singer Mona De Lafitte, whose life is brought to an abrupt end by a vampire baron named Shrowdy Von Kiefer. Henceforth, she is doomed to a miserable existence as a creature of the night in Von Kiefer's gloomy castle. Confronted with her seemingly hopeless fate, she decides to run away and try to fulfil her dream of singing at the Paris Opera. Accompanied by her mischievous bat Froderick, Mona must face a number of challenges in her odyssey and learn not only to accept her vampire nature, but also to use her newly acquired vampiric abilities to her advantage. 1. Vampyre Story is hilarious and witty point'n click adventure game with striking graphics and high quality voice acting. If you're looking for hard puzzles, maybe this isn't the game. But if you're looking for a strong adventure with a good plot and good characters Vampyre Story is an excellent choice. It's probably the best adventure of 2008. [Jan 2009]
  2. This series' beginning has brought us a game which fulfills the expectations and should please adventure fans, with more than enough durability and balance between its sections.
  3. A Vampyre Story is a humorous adventure, which provides many difficult mysteries and a lot of fun. The voice of the character Mona is very annoying in the German version, so install the English one.

Most important is how much cheesy writing you are willing to put up with.
  5. Puzzles aren't too hard, but they aren't too easy. [Feb 2009, p.80]
  6. It is tough to fulfill six years of expectations and hope, but ultimately I liked and occasionally admired A Vampyre Story—and can't wait to see the improvements that can be made by this developer the second time around.
  7. A tragically flawed LucasArts tribute. [Jan 2009, p.80]

This title is a great tribute to the classic point n' click adventure genre whose future has been written off too many times, and ironically (as the title may suggest), breathes new life to the genre. The game obviously borrows heavily in appearance, humor and overall style from the Monkey Island series due to the developing team's involvement with the LucasArt's classics. The references are all there: from the rubber chicken with a pully to "(wo)man of low moral fiber" etc. The puzzles are standard fare but do require use of the gray cells. The script is well-written and full of witty dialogues between the main characters that at times however, feel like overdone. While Froderick the bat's voice acting is overall great, that of Mona's is ultimately irritating. There are minor glitches as cut scenes replaying and some dialogue choices unwittingly resulting in identical responses from NPCs, but the game is otherwise stable with easy-to-use interface. Gameplay depth is somewhat limited. Overall, highly recommended to fans of the LucasArts adventures and to those of the genre in general. 8.8/10. Expand

What an excellent game. During an era where the graphics in a game seem to be the only criteria as to what makes a "good" game, it is refreshing to play a title where the heart and soul of gameplay is the story. Mona is a little annoying at first but it doesn't take long to warm up to her. As the game went on I enjoyed playing her character more and more. Her pet bat is a little too wordy at times but overall the characters lent themselves to hilarious dialog. The art in this game is quite simply breathtaking. Games with fancy HDR lighting and the latest physics engines don't hold a candle to the beautifully drawn backgrounds in A Vampyre Story. No real surprise here though; Bill Tiller is one of my favorite artists at work today. Another great element of this game is the music. The creepy magic/opera themes play themselves out very well and it is obvious that care went into every aspect of this game. Some minor annoyances: some of the puzzles are a little convoluted and I found a fair share of bugs. However, these are minor and with a small team like the one Bill Tiller assembled you have to expect that sort of thing. I can't wait for the sequel... do yourself a favor and purchase this game. It's only $30 and I can guarantee you won't regret it. Expand

This brought back a lot of fond memories spending endless hours exploring the caribbean with Guybrush Threepwood. I absolutely adore the art style and how the blend of 3D to 2D can work so seamlessly. Monkey Island 4 tried and while the game was still lots of fun it lacked. This though was spectacular. The voice actors seemed a bit mis-cast at the very beginning but once you've completed the game you will know that you would be upset if they changed in the next game. They're a charming, somewhat duo that always provide a good deal of entertainment. The puzzles are very logical once you've set your mind on that special "Adventure" mode. There were slight technical glitches and some problems with some of the puzzle related story but overall a great adventure game that doesn't stand shy of the ranks of the old classics. For a genre once thought to be long gone this is very alive and very kicking. It's no Grim Fandango, The Dig or Monkey Island ... yet. But it's also just the first part of a trilogy with the next part (eagerly awaited) comes next year.

Go buy this, best 40 bucks you will spend in a long time. A must for experienced adventurers.
