Betrayer is certainly an atypical FPS both in visual style and in the environment, both in gameplay that mixes exploration, combat, and search for clues in a particular way.
A refreshingly new visual take with emphasis on exploration and stealth. Creative writing went into this story and characters. I hate how people whined about the black and white atmosphere so much the devs made color an option as there's a REASON for this, but respect them for doing so to cater to the gamer. The presentation is fresh and relative enough to keep you enjoying it throughout the game. Very easy to be overwhelmed if you run and aggro too many enemies. Awesome visual and audio cues will make clue you in to your exploration rewards. Fairly difficult default gameplay, in that if you just charge into 3 enemies you WILL die. Overall I loved the game and can't wait to see what they come up with next.
We appreciate the attempt of doing something original, but not all gameplay mechanics are well implemented, creating an experience that some times becomes way too confusing. Still, if you like the idea behind and you understand what pieces don't fit as they should, it deserves a try.
Betrayer faces interesting dilemmas. It has an intriguing story built from a great mystery and good gameplay to back it up, but feels unnecessarily punishing.
Betrayer is a game that suckered me in with its alluring visuals, but once it had me within its grasp it outright refused to let me enjoy myself. This is a game that is far below the standard of quality one would expect from the creators of F.E.A.R., and further proof, if we ever needed it, that presentation shouldn’t take precedence over gameplay.
It's an interesting mixture of Stalker, FEAR and Thief. If you like hand-holding and constant spoon-fed exposition, go play something else.
If you like an eerie and unique adventure that embraces a sense of discovery and mystery that keeps you wondered and engaged in creative ways throughout the entire game, then do yourself a favor and buy it.
Purchased the beta version and watched it's development. I also own several other FPS games and survival/horror games. Betrayer is original and hits the mark. Fantastic. Requires strategy and thought before attacking multiple enemies. Check inventory. You might not be able to make the attempt! Set in colonial times, setting is amazing. I give a 10 seeing metacritic is 7.6. $20 dollar game, but should be more. I would have paid $50. Original. Historical. Attention to most detail. I look forward to a AAA sequel!
Interesting concept, flawed execution. The most striking aspect of the game are its visuals, which already signal that Betrayer is a game that aims to set itself apart from others of the same genre. I suppose it succeeds in that respect, but I wouldn't call Betrayer a good game. The premise is interesting enough, though I feel the story is stretched out a bit too long. I think it would've been beneficial to have the game condensed to a couple hours shorter. It also wouldn't have hurt to see a little more diversity with regards to objectives and environments as the game does become increasingly repetitive towards the second half.
The intended visual effect does appear atmospheric, but is also hard on the eyes. I thought the ideal colour set up included reduced brightness and contrast with a slight tinge of colour. The environments themselves look decent enough, but gun models leave much to be desired. While the gameplay mechanics and UI are solid enough, it's clear that Betrayer is a low budget title with quite a few limitations. Given more resources, I'd be interested in what else Blackpowder Games come up with, as I quite like the artistic direction and 'feel' they seem to be going with their products.
Overall rating - 6.8/10
The artistic style - and especially the sound (there is not too much actually - and the sound itself is not of astonishing quality - but the effect of it is still great) are amazing. I do not want to use the term "amazing" lightly - but rarely have i played a game where i actually felt "alone". This is caused by some effects that seem to trigger such emotions - at least for me. (the wind, the sound of the grass etc. )
The game itself is - well.. lets be honest .. pretty lame. There are some rather simple puzzles - if one can call them that ... and a few ghostly enemies that are seriously lacking some brains. Then there is a story that does not quite work very well in terms of storytelling. - oh and it is also not very creative.
