An incredible journey for a group of amateurs, a proper celebration of a master piece and a remake that manages to improve over the weakest aspects of the Valve classic. It took a long time, but you won't see us complaining.
Was soll ich sagen? Die Entwickler schlagen hier einen tollen Weg ein, machen vieles besser als das Original. Eines der wenigen Remakes, die was auf sich haben. Der Käufer bekommt hier einen grafisch aufgemotzten AAA+ Titel für kleines Geld
Black Mesa is a lot of things. It's one of the best mods ever made and a package that offers every Half-Life fan what they want. It's also a chance for newcomers to get to know a game that has been put on a pedestal over the years, in a relatively modern way. But more importantly, it's a very special and entertaining look into the history of shooters.
It started as an homage, and it became the best version of the game. Black Mesa is fantastic remake of Half-Life, that never betrays the source material and gives it what is needed to be appreciated by a modern player on a modern PC - even if Source Engine is definitely very old. Just keep in mind it's a well refined but not triple A game, and you'll be just fine with it.
Black Mesa is dated in several ways and the new Xen levels have some issues, but this is an excellent experience that old fans of Half-Life and people who may have never played it before should absolutely check out.
Half-Life is a masterpiece and I think the remake makes it even better. It amazed me as much as the original did 25 years ago. You can tell at all times that Black Mesa was made by fans for fans. I didn't miss anything at any point and I'm impressed by how some elements have been redesigned. Unfortunately, there are a few difficult trial and error passages towards the end. Nevertheless, it is an absolute recommendation to buy.
It started off so well, and just like the original game, by the time I got to Xen, the entire game fell off.
It just kept going on, and on, and on, after a while I was just rushing to finish it because I felt like the game didn't really needed that much elaboration over that part. They do some interesting things with the story of the vortiguns and the aliens, but it didn't needed three more hours to do such a thing; there's a lot of puzzles at the end of the game that require you to do the same, and after a while the whole thing just feels padded.
I didn't finish it, got past some puzzles that involve shooting at pulsating pipes of sorts, and called it a day.
THIS IS HOW REMAKES SHOULD BE MADE OR HOW FREEMAN DESTROYED THE ALIENS IN A NEW WRAP! Yes, this version of Halfa plays completely differently and more enjoyable. In general, the levels are no different in concept, but the gameplay is still different. At first it’s interesting and pleasant to shoot mobs and soldiers, but then it feels like a chore. It often happened that I didn’t understand where to go; at my discretion, they would add at least some interactive pointers or some information on the interface in Freeman’s suit so that the player could see it as well as the skin, I think it would be useful. Zen is something, I haven’t seen such beauty in games for a long time, it can’t be compared to the original, they really put effort into it. The only thing that confused me was a certain prolongation at the end, this running around and in some way even jerking off, obviously to stretch out the time in the game, but in fact it is boring and routine. It’s obvious that they wanted to reveal Zen, but how would it work out completely, especially with the revelation of the lore of the mobs themselves in Zen and the addition of various new beautiful locations. But why all this running around with turning on or off this or that joke, puzzle on puzzle, often I just wandered and got lost. At first, Zen simply produced the best feeling that can be imagined in terms of the atmosphere of the game, but then in the end the aftertaste was as if it was not pleasure, but some kind of test **** short, if you didn’t really like Halfa and would like to give this series a chance, then play it, it will seem like the best option to you.
I really wanted to like this game. I hugely enjoyed the original and its sequels. The idea of playing a faithful remake was very exciting to me. Sadly this was not my experience and in retrospect a faithful remake was not what I wanted. Let me explain why. This film does not have the nostalgia of the original, it is to all intents and purposes an entirely new game that copies the original. There are some glitches, nothing that will stop you enjoying the game. Although I found the settings were reset a few times which was annoying, especially as the settings are really difficult to navigate. The story is quite slow which wasn’t noticeable in the original as it’s more engaging. That’s the big issue, this remake doesn’t hold my attention. There are many more minor issues. It is not as scary as the original. For a modern game it looks quite dated and generic, the lighting especially is disappointing. It is not as scary as the original. The other big issue is that the controls are pretty horrible. I am playing with a controller on a big TV, maybe it would be different with a keyboard and mouse. The controller really doesn’t work well. I cannot for the life of me no matter what I do get it to switch to the weapon I want, to the point I walk over to my keyboard and switch that way. I don’t get it as the PlayStation 2 version controls perfectly. Oh and ladders are still a pain to get on and off. With the 25th anniversary release of the original and the quality of life improvements that makes I see no reason to play this remake, except maybe it looks like they fixed Xen although I didn’t play that far so I’m only speculating.
I've never been a fan of the Half-Life series, it's probably one of the most overrated game series in the world. The reason I don't like Black Mesa is the horrible level design. The game doesn't guide the player in any way and acts as if you've played the game before. I lost what little interest I had in the story within the first few hours with these terrible gameplay mechanics. I definitely do not recommend it to anyone who is not a fan of this series. If you are curious about the story, watch a video on Youtube.
