You know, I live in Ukraine(country where this game was made), An to my mind Criostatis is the best game of the gaming companies in our country. I know that it requires good computer system but however here are the best monster appearing, cold effects and story giving that I saw. I hope, the next part will be soon!

I just finished playing the game four times. The story is the deepest and most mystical of any game I've played to date. I'm 53 years old and I love and cherish a good storyline. I'm looking forward to playing the game on a very cold day in the winter so that it will be more engrossing. I would like to thank the team of Cryostasis for a job well done and well deserving. I bought a GTX 285 to play this game. What a perfect match! The game with the latest patch is virtually bug free. Just a minor hiccup here and there. I did have to turn off advanced physx for the final boss scene. I did leave the regular physx on though. I used 1280x720 with 2x antiliasing and it looks great on my 24" monitor. The mood is perfect. I love to see sparks flying when fighting some tough little bosses. I look forward to more games from the Russians. Expand

Graphic Great, and runs smooth as with a Quad core Q9550 and GTX295.. However I found it repetative and confusing, with no enemys or weapons to start its very dull to begin with!!

It's not for everyone. I thought long and hard before spending money on this game but I was surprisingly impressed. This is probably the scariest game you will ever play that manages to exclude even a drop of blood. The gun play takes some getting used to and the plot is linear and confusing but the presentation and innovative mechanics are what makes this a truly memorable accomplishment for the FPS Horror genre. Cryostasis offers a very refreshing and original presentation to its already well-written story about the human psyche, and how one man slowly changes the fate of a ship and its crew. While an FPS, it is slow, steady, and well-paced in its delivery, and is not for everyone who expects a constant stimulus of gunfights and action. All in all, if you appreciate a great story and setting, Cryostasis is for you. Expand

This game has a great atmosphere and the story is alright too even though there wasn't much explanation for the monsters. Although much of the game looks the same, it does resemble a Russian Icebreaker well and generally makes you feel creeped out. The health system is extremely creative and totally original. Kudos to them. The only reason why I don't rate this higher is because the game runs horribly. I have a 4870 and the game is filled with stuttering. This is must likely because it runs on the Crysis engine. However, if you can get the game to run smoothly it is a beauty to look at. Expand

Cryostasis has dull gunplay, graphical issues (some computers can't run the game properly -- it doesn't take advantage of dual-cores), and a repitive environments. It also contains the single best story in the history of gaming. This is a landmark achievement. I was stunned and amazed. Not everyone will like it, but everyone NEEDS to play it.

This game is definitely different then other 1st person action (?)/ adventure games I've played. With limited action (which is why i put a ? next to action) and a kind of slow pace, many gamers more inclined towards games like Halo might be turned off from an initial view, but It's not a bad game at all. While it sometimes suffers from being slow and dull, I think that that might be one of the points that the developers were trying to get across. The arctic is very much void of color and isn't very interesting to look at, and this game captured that feel very well. Give it a try. Expand

Absolutely the worst game I have ever had the displeasure of playing. I bought it on clearance for $15 and in my mind was still overpriced. This steaming pony loaf is a monument to superficial minds at the heart of technique and style over substance. Any reviewer who tries to say the story is solid or even comprehensible is as ignorant, vapid and/or juvenile as those that slapped it together. If you merely read the synopsis of the box and read the "survival guide" you will see they don't even agree with each other on the narrative premise. It is not clear what the folk tale that is told throughout has to do with the main plot. Unless you are a typical inarticulate adolescent with little or no education in literature and even less common sense, the thoughtlessness with which themes are slapped together will just be insulting. It is not satisfying as an action game either. It is slow and confining. One might say it is appropriate to the scene but I get the distinct impression combat is heavily hamstrung to prevent performance issues stemming from the fatuous emphasis on empty bullet points of features. Ultimately the loser in the trade-off is game-play. In the worship of shadowing effects some downright asinine design choices have been made. The folk-story telling should really be treated as a cut-scene that you can skip or the auto-saves should happen after every section is read. The "last weapon" hot-key should be implemented like every other first person shooter: Last _equipped_ weapon. In Cryostasis you have to have fired a weapon for it to be the last weapon. It should probably be a clue that this game is one of the biggest half-assed efforts ever seen in that the sub-title "The Sleep of Reason" appears nowhere on the packaging; at least nowhere on the copies that were on the shelf where I purchased it. This game gets a 3/10 for it's storyline only. The game itself looks awful, the water effects are extremely cheesy and bad... and not to mention on top of looking awful it also RUNS AWFUL! This thing would probably lag even with a GTX-285 or something, I mean my god talk about terrible optimization. The gameplay is stiff and boring, I can really only see playing it for the story... which is slow as dripping molasses mind you. On the plus side this minds me of Call of Cthuhlu, so I give it a 3/10 for nostalgia and having an 'alright' storyline. Expand

Cryostasis is a unique mix of different game play mechanics that you won't find in any other survival horror. Unique weapons from a world war time period to new inventions and the story makes you think unlike other games were the story is fed to you with a silver spoon. You will fight an array of different ice zombies and boss fights, each with different tactics to defeat them, requiring you to think on your toes. Using heat as a source of health and energy is also unique, keeping you stressed about staying warm in a arctic environment. The graphics are actually quiet remarkable for a 2009 game, but at the same time they require good hardware for top settings. Only reason i am not giving this game an 10 is because the games bugs are evident and the lack of re-playability let this game down. Besides that.. A great game from a unexpected source. Expand

Cryostasis is the return of oldstyle Survival Horror games, it is slow, the enemies are powerfull and rare, you're weapons suck, puzzles over enemies, and atmoshpere and psychological horror comes before cheap scares and shock moments. But frankly, while it does so many things well, it have several gameruining bugs that occurs while replaying, you're HUD disappears after a specific flashback, jumping and sprinting might be impossible, and some doors appear to to have invisible walls when oppened. But plot, puzzles, innovation, the mental echo function and especially the sounds are what makes this game so good. Expand

What's going on here?. This game is much better than the 69 score it received. Cryostasis is an innovative and refreshing concept, with great delivery. I mean, I actually feel cold when I play this game. The puzzles are sufficiently hard, and the enemies are as easy to kil, as you are to die by them (as it should be). The PhysX is awesome, play it without, then with, and you'll see what I mean. Great flashback stories, but that deos get a little old after the tenth time. The controls work great, by the way...no bad porting here. So, I really like this game. I'm playing it for the second time now. I highly reccomend it to anyone who is bored with the usual cookie-cutter, FPS stuff. Expand

It's a shame this game hasn't received a better critical reception than it has. Based on the critic reviews I feel that overall this game has been largely misunderstood. The biggest flaw in this game is - without argument - combat mechanics, particularly the melee combat. However, these failings in design were not enough to turn me off to the game. This game's story and the folktale that is being told concurrently tie together nicely - the game's story leads us through a modern mystery which gives us "facts and details" about the events that lead up to the demise of the ship's crew, while the folktale gave us a more esoteric insight into the base human emotions and fears that often - and in this case have - lead to highly irrational actions. The criticisms of the "heat" based health system also seems to be larger misunderstood. A standard practice in FPS games these days is to indicate you are being shot by the enemy with a red "arc" or "blur" in your line of sight; the red being meant to correlate with blood. Here, the indicators are not red blurs, but ice "marks" indicating that hits from the enemy are freezing you rather than physically piercing you. However this is only an indication of the overall misunderstanding. Why is it that your character is even assumed to be physically alive or moving through a frozen ship in what we would term reality? I went through this game thinking the body of my character was lying dead somewhere, either in the ship or back in the ice when the sled fell in the crevasse. It makes the bizarre enemies, traveling back in time, etc. much more plausible within the context of the story. I felt as if I was supposed to be "between" time, giving me this this one opportunity to change the course of events that have already occurred. And why the complaints about homogeneous environments? The entire game is played in a single location, an old rusting ship. What kind of variety do these critics expect? Comments like these justify my assertion that many game journalists lack the credentials to adequately evaluate and comment on games. Being a past employee of a videogame retailer should not be sufficient qualification for gaining employment as a critic. But I digress... Despite Cryostasis's graphical glitches and poor combat design, I thoroughly enjoyed this game and the story it presented. I hope the developer can bring other similarly creative and interesting concepts to markets beyond its Eastern European home. My score reflects the technical imperfections of the game and their impact on my impression of the game as a whole. Expand

Cryostasis is an incredibly flawed game, the combat is weak, the environments are repetitive, its buggy and poorly optimized, and the enemies become kind of lame towards the end. However, the atmosphere, puzzles, sound design, and even the story are all top notch. First of all, I haven't seen a game make you feel so isolated, even games such as Dead Space or System Shock 2 you'll have people talking to you, in Cryostasis the only dialogue comes through flashbacks of the crew and how everything got messed up and it really manages to keep you on the edge of your seat constantly. The flashbacks are the puzzles of the game, you'll come across dead crew members and you'll be able to relive their last moments to try and set things right, things such as having to walk by about a dozen angry snarling hungry dogs is really nerve wracking and one of the many moments of brilliance shown by Action Forms in this game, although there are two or three that end up being rather vague and frustrating, with the amount in the game I think that's a fair amount. The sound design is probably some of the best I've ever heard in a game right up there with Dead Space, hearing the Warden limp around with his chains rattling is incredibly cool, but even that can't compare to the big enemy weilding two tommy guns. When he spots you you'll hear an air siren go off and you know you're in for the fight of your life, hearing the air siren again once you've killed him makes you breathe a huge sigh of relief. All of the guns sound really nice and the reloading animations especially are really well done making combat less of a chore which is nice. The story was a bit vague and mysterious which is always cool, there was never really an explanation for things leaving the interpretation of what happened up to you, the flashbacks following the captain are especially well written and acted. This game is brilliant, it has its fair share of problems so it can't truly be a perfect 10 but I'm really looking forward to the next game from Action Forms. Expand

The only problem with this game is its advertising. It's advertised to be a first person horror shooter and puzzle adventure. In fact, it is none of that. It takes place in the first person perspective, you shoot things, monsters run at you and can kill you quickly and the atmosphere is heavy, and there are puzzles. But all of that is minuscule. Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason is a mystery game. Everything about the game, from graphics to lighting to monsters to cutscenes, is part of the environment that tries to tell a story. These pieces of information scattered about are all for piecing together of the absolute most amazing tale in video game history. Symbolism is heavy and atmosphere is so thick you can cut it with a knife. It's not just a game, but a spiritual experience. It shows more than any other release that games are art and a valuable storytelling medium. Buy it, at least if you make sure your computer can run it. Expand

The convoluted story probably tricks the weak minded into thinking they're enjoying an amazing tale, but in fact the story makes little sense and succumbs to plotholes and timeline errors under the weight of appearing deep and complex.. The Sleep of Reason is right. The graphics are alright, and the overall mood is well done, but the levels feel empty and tedious, the combat is mediocre at best, and the game bogged my system down when even today's titles won't. It's worth checking out if you're a diehard survival horror fan, but don't expect it to make sense, and be sure to pick it up for under $10. Expand

This game was recommended for people who loved Amnesia : The Dark Descent . I was rather skeptical about it , but since people highly recommended it , i gave it a try. The Story is enough to keep you interested in the game , since it tells it in small chunks. The Core mechanic of the game is very nice , only i don't understand why Heat considers as Health also , if they would've added health kits , it would've been more immerse. The graphics are okay enough , but the engine sadly wants too much of a PC for it to handle. But other than that , this game will be a blast for most story/horror lovers , but i don't recommend the 20€ price tag on Steam , since this game is worth about 10-15€ Expand

This game is plain weird. While the shooter aspects of the game are not that great, the suspenseful story is dramatically built piece-by-piece which keeps you coming back to finish it. Completing the game felt like an accomplishment, but I don't think passing this one by would have left me feeling like I missed out.

Outstanding graphics and rich setting, unique gameplay that thankfully never resorts to run-of-the-mill FPS action, and an atmosphere so thick you can chew on it. After several years I still haven't finished the game because it's so intense I nearly **** myself each time I play it.

For once my score agrees with critics' average. It is an enjoyable and unusual game and I give it credit for that and for the scary atmospheric feel. It is similar in concept to Amnesia: The Dark Descent but Cryostasis lacks on execution and the story. The graphics are good but spoiled by ugly lighting and shadows - and I was running it at max settings. Also, the game has crashed on me too much at the end spoiling the immersion - perhaps it does not like 64-bit environment. It has innovative game mechanics, scary atmosphere and that feel of hopelesness with no clear direction despite being totally linear. But somehow I fail to connect with the game even though I speak Russian and designers did a great job recreating likely setting of that era. I also think the final boss scene is very disappointing - it almost feels that the designers built a game that kept going and going and then they had a brainstorming session to wrap it all up to meet release deadline. In my opinion it fits neither with the main story nor the secondary. To sum up this game has more goods than bads overall and at current prices (as of July'11) it is an absolutely great deal to try something novel. Expand

Picked this game up on Steam for pocket-change and wasn't expecting a perfect experience if the reviews were anything to go by. Those reviews couldn't be any more wrong. For what I paid for this game, I received an incredible experience. At the time of writing this game is a few years old but this is hardly noticeable as the game looks gorgeous even by todays standards. This is a bit of a horror game so it would it wouldn't be very good if it had bad atmosphere but I can safely report this game has one of the best atmospheres in any game I've played in a long time. It's extremely immersive and you just get sucked right in to the experience. It's paced extremely well which befits the cold an dark environment in which you play in. Expand

The best of the game, getting the dive, the sublime ambience, the scares that gives the game (much more than Dead Space), the sound gets acongojarte, all without music, which is a great merit (a Unlike other games like Silent Hill that base much of their potential in the excellent music), the pace of play, how to get into the story, graphics, * the original so they have established the''life''in the game, continuously seeking warmth to avoid being cannon fodder, the visions that has the protagonist, the realism of the guns. Fantastic game, one of the best games I've played in recent years. Expand

Another thoughtful, exciting and atmospheric FPS from Russia. It has the basic FPS elements but intertwines a gripping and chilling (pun intended) story into a fun and scary thriller. It boasts some great visuals, interesting characters with some great voice acting. The weapons are simple, as they should be, since this takes place on an icebreaker in the late 60's. The idea of using heat for health is unique and genius. There are certain parts where the baddies scared the crap out of me. The flaws though are few though. The game engine is a bit clunky and slow. The movements are unrealistic at times and can be annoying. Switching and loading weapons is also slow and infuriating when in a pinch. In a few instances, the mutants get stuck in corners or objects. Lastly, the interactivity is limited as some items can't be used, picked up or moved. Overall, it works well and is a very exciting and smart adventure. 75/100. Expand

This game could be amazing and one of rare 10/10 I give. The gameplay is great, the symbolic ways of warmth/cold, the mental echo, the enemies (and thus the art-design), the STORY are amazing, genius, and so on. The atmosphere is superb. The climax is one of the best I've seen. I want to give this game 10/10, but sadly I can't, because of the technical side. It's also one of the worst optimized game I've ever seen. Its performance is terrible sometimes (from 50fps to 5fps), the crashes are defienitely too often - in the Poison level I started to crash every goddamn minute! I had checked the walkthrough, saw it's one of the 3 last levels and decided to watch them on you tube, to see the climax of the story. Frankly, I didn't lost much, because they're mostly without fights, retrospections fill the most part of them. The last fight and the ending explains everything and it's one of the most superb stories I've seen in games. The graphics and sounds are ok, but again - the game fails because of being terribly optimized. It could be 10/10, it's 6/10. Expand

For awhile this game had some popularity from appearing on early DirectX Benchmarks, then dropped off the map for some reason. It is a first person shooter, but feels much more like a puzzle/adventure game to me. This is the kind of gameplay that FEAR tried to become (or maybe just what I wanted it to be) It is a bit choppy though. Even on pretty decent hardware (ATI 5770 w/ 4core proc) it was a bit choppy and textures sometimes were muddy. Overall however the visual aesthetic made up for that though. I really enjoyed the game, the atmosphere was great and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy ]the idea of 'Amnesia', but want more combat and maybe just a tad less frightening. Expand

  1. Design flaws and the game's tendency to wax philosophical do not distract from the core idea and its stylish execution. This is what Vivisector, Action Forms' previous project, should have been like.
  2. Cryostasis is a brave, fascinating, often very beautiful game, but I find it impossible to recommend it - and not least because it runs like an exploded dog on most PCs. It's not quite creative enough - its environments fall into a monotony of samey rooms and bulkheads - and its combat is too clunky to be delicious.
  3. Cryostasis is a kind of revelation in the horror genre where you can alter the past to change the present. Game excels in visuals but lacks in combat system. [Feb 2009]
