D-Day will make you curse yourself for every lost vehicle, unit and infantry man and your dreams will be plagued by visions of allied soldiers dying, one after the other, on a far-away beach in a foreign land.

The gameplay in D-Day is tactical and challenging but remains fun throughout and this is a satisfying combination. RTS fans will pick it up easily but there are some great additions to the genre too, such as your troops' range of special abilities, the interactivity with the environment that allows you to destroy or occupy (and fire from within) buildings and the bonuses you receive for adding differently skilled men to vehicle crews.
  3. At times I thought there were too many choices available in regards to issuing orders, but this does add realism to gameplay. The graphics are top notch within a genre that usually lacks stunning effects.
  4. Every detail - from locations and dates right down to individual tanks' weak points and reload times - has been made as realistic as possible... For those looking to recreate the progress of an Allied soldier at this harrowing, historic event, this is probably as close as you're going to get. [Oct 2004, p.106]
  5. I think this game will appear to WWII or history buffs, real-time strategy fans, and anyone with a strong patriotic streak.
  6. Challenging, but not always in the right way. Invade elsewhere.
  7. The bare bones for success are there. With a bit more polish and the intention to deliver the game as a game rather than what amounts to an interactive documentary when all is said and done, I am confident that the developers can pull off a better, more entertaining game in the future.

If converted to a turn-based game, many of D-Day's concepts, graphics, and missions would work well. In their current form, however, they don't. [Apr 2005, p.73]
  9. Missions are pretty linear in design with focused objectives and paths to certain areas rigged with a host of enemies, and no means to really flank or come up with alternate routes.
  10. Nothing special as far as real-time strategy games go. It doesn't break any new ground, and it doesn't rise to stand on top of the pile of other games in the genre.
  11. What it does feature (in large amounts) is lazy, un-inspiring map design, shoddy AI and pathfinding and ridiculous infantry micro-management. Hardly the groundbreaking improvements that the paying gamer demands these days, and we certainly don't blame them.

The game is just plain boring.
  13. Aside from the documentaries and research, D-Day is a lazy, insipid, botched effort of a game.

It's "Commandos" with dozens of units and none of the character. [Jan 2005, p.106]
  15. The game is riddled with silly and clumsy flaws and there are numerous holes in the gameplay that make this a distinctly average game in a genre with so many far better alternatives.
  16. Despite its smattering of positive elements though, D-Day reeks of being rushed to the table like a pot of undercooked sauerkraut.
  17. At best, D-Day offers up a tepid serving of cookie-cutter RTS gameplay. At worst, it makes you descend into micromanagement hell.
  18. In the vernacular of the time, D-Day is just plain FUBAR.

A poorly conceived, poorly executed mess. It’s an insult to the intelligence of gamers everywhere, and that’s no mean feat.

Much more enjoyable than Panzers which is a bit childish (and has very inferior pathfinding)! It's the second episode in a trilogie (but Much more enjoyable than Panzers which is a bit childish (and has very inferior pathfinding)! It's the second episode in a trilogie (but not the best)!
