Diablo is the perfect example of a game that transcends its genre.
  2. About as close to Hell as you're going to get - whether you believe in it or not. Everything about this game just rules and it will blow you away. The gameplay is the easiest I've ever come across in an RPG which is just fantastic.
  3. A feast of atmospheric entertainment. While it might tire after a while, you'll likely get your money's worth long before that point, and moreso if you venture into the chaos that is Battle.net, where life takes on a whole new meaning and the hours slip mysteriously away. Diablo is a landmark game.
  4. A title that combines the elegant simplicity of an action game and the addictive storyline of an adventure game with the personalization and exploratoration of an old-school RPG... The best game to come out in the past year, and you should own a copy. Period.

RPG fans have waited for this one for a long time, and they won't be disappointed. [March 1997, p.102]
  6. For a highly addictive, replayable game, facing the Lord of Terror is somewhat of an anti-climax. Provided you've played as a Rogue and have the Bow of the Bear it's pretty simple to kill him off. Playing the Warrior though is a little harder.
  7. Despite the rather pale storyline (at least within the game itself), watered-down quests and a fair amount of necessary repetition, Diablo is a must for anyone interested in "just plain fun." Action gamers and RPG-ers alike will be enthralled.

It was a ten for its day and age, and I have a feeling it's comming back with Diablo 3, all for what Ghast said, 96-98 if they remade it with new models, textures, and more customizable classes... I can't understand how some people get so adamant over a mere game. But anyway, I love Diablo so much that I frequently have wet dreams over it and I have been known to masturbate while playing. Oh, and once I was so engrossed in the world of Diablo that I forgot to eat for about six days...I lost about ten kilos. No joke, man. And one time I felt so in love with the game that I couldn't help but lick the screen for a while. I'm not proud of that. I know it's weird, but stranger things have been known to happen amongst game freaks. Expand

It is STILL scary if you play now. The butcher doesn't make me wet my pants like he did the first time anymore, but knowing that if you die, you're going to have to get all your stuff back is just nerve-racking.

Possibly the most atmospheric RPG ever made. Or if that's going too far, then easily the best music.

The only thing that makes it an adjustment to play today is the lack of run/walk.

I play this at least once a year and have since it came out.

Diablo inspired perhaps countless games and not just games but great games. This game is endlessly fun to play and very very addictive even now. Randomly generated dungeon levels, dynamic ai, a plethora of weapons armor and items and 3 classes to choose from. This is a one of a kind and practically the first of its kind. A priceless gem of all ages! Expand

Yeah, those were the times - the times when "replayability" actually meant playing the game a gazillion of times, until the CD became razor thin from constant reinstalls, until you could, like, run circles around bosses at character level 1 with your eyes closed, and still enjoy the game!
    THAT'S REPLAYABILITY.
    And that was Diablo.
