Europa Universalis III represents an older and more thoughtful style of gaming. It's easy to pick up, and very easy to get your head handed to you. For those who persevere, you'll find a deep strategy game that will challenge your skill as a statesman and a general.

A strategic masterpiece and the gateway drug to grand strategy

Being able to pick any nation in the a period from 1399 to 1820, you have a high level of freedom. Whether you want to pick up the kingdom of Castille to recreate the Spanish Empire, pick Napoleonic France and conquer Moscow or conquer the world as Ryuku, the game allows you to. On top of this, you have a diplomatic AI that works far better than their counterparts in most other large strategy games. The game consists of so many well thought out mechanics and gameplay aspects that you could play hundreds of hours, still having many challenges left and countries to conquer.

But the scale comes at a cost: One too many abstractions to make the game completely immersive coupled with a not quite competent AI and bugs that at unlucky times can be gamebreaking keeps me from giving the game a perfect 10.
Still a must buy if you are into strategy games

These games are potentially fascinating, but for most of us with lives, jobs and families and maybe only an hour a day max for some gaming time, any Paradox game will thus take you 2 years to complete one game not really an option.
