  • Summary: In 2183 humanity discovers an energy source that facilitates travel into new regions of space. Gigantic mother ships collect the newly discovered fuel from the distant energy fields and transport it to Earth. When the fleet is destroyed in an alien attack, the player sets out on a perilous journey home in a small harvester. In Ion Assault, instead of conventional weapons, players use the free energy particles that are abundant in space to fend off swarms of aliens. The particles are bundled and the player is able to shoot them at asteroids and enemy ships. The particles are not destroyed in this process, but are redistributed in space, ready to be magnetically attracted again and re-used. Their random distribution makes for dynamic gameplay and calls for a more strategic approach. Expand

Ion Assault is an arcade space shooter that has not really a lot in common with the typical arcade shooter. The beautiful art and level design is the best special feature in this game while the sound settings are really weak.

Ion Assault is a well polished, frantic and addictive little game. Unfortunately it comes with plenty of little frustrations, not least of which is that if you want to play, you have to be able to dedicate enough time to make it to the end of the campaign, else you'll lose your progress.

A gorgeous and creative spin on the arena shooter formula. [Feb 2011, p.60]

Not a clone of asteroids...not quite Geometry's kinda unique all by itself that you have no guns except sucking up ions and heating up asteroids and or ships till they eventually explode or collect as many as you can and shoot it... takes time to get used to the mechanics but I've found myself spending a lot of time playing this and enjoying the boss fights in each sector too... the female voice announcer is well done as well.

Either you hate or love this game and sit for a 30 minute sessions trying to beat your own or the leaderboard high scores like I did. Graphics are something special and should run super fast on any mid-end computer or laptop.

If you can get it on sale then GRAB IT! really worth it.

Ion Assault has a great physics engine and some pretty awesome graphics but that's where the game stops being interesting. Gameplay is plain, way too plain. Expand
