Do not trust your first impression - this game is a true gem. Elaborate, huge, unbridled, stylish, fresh, captivatingly different. The only blemish is its poor performance and many bugs.
Kenshi gives me fallout 1 vibes where there is an consequence for every decision also the aesthetics feels the same I love that ominous fear type of theme but one change is that fallout has a goal
Kenshi is not a normal game and it's necessary to understand the long development and the intention of the developer to judge it. With its infinite possibilities, there's quite nothing like it and it's a dream come true for some players, but others will find the dated graphics and poor optimization unacceptable. Still, to create such an open world so well crafted with such a small team deserves the utmost respect
An intriguing RPG/Survival hybrid sandbox that invites you to experiment in the world it presents. Some technical hiccups interrupt the open world and the freeform nature definitely isn’t for everyone but if you are after something different, Kenshi is the very definition of that.
A hardcore, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi survival game that is nothing if not challenging. Despite being in beta and harboring a variety of issues, Kenshi shows great potential; and its beta status leaves hope that some of that potential will be realized. This is a game that is very difficult to become established in, but that just adds value to your investment of time and strategy.
It took Chris Hunt and his small team 12 years to develop Kenshi and that unfortunately shows. The game utilizes an archaic engine, is poorly optimised and hideous most of the time. It also does next to nothing to help the player get a grasp of its mechanics, and, as it happens, their complexity are Kenshi’s most important aspect. I would be happy to love this game, because I understand and applaud Hunt’s idea of completely open gameplay, but loving Kenshi is extremely hard. [02/2019, p.47]
This is one of my favorite games ever. With that being said, I am obviously biased. I tend to forget how long it took me to learn how to play this game, how long it took to learn the mechanics, controls, and the UI. And just to get it out of the way, yes, this game does have some technical issues. This game was, and still is, ahead of it's time, and the limitations of the era are evident.
Kenshi is squad based RPG, a simulation, base builder, sandbox, among many other descriptors. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic samurai hell world with many different races and beasts. This game is BRUTAL; one of the starts you can choose is to literally be a slave, a playthrough which I highly recommend.
You level up the skills of your character(s) by actually doing the skill, which feels fulfilling. There are a plethora of skills, of which some races are better or worse at than others. I should also mention the combat, as it is very important. The combat might seem janky on the surface, but I assure you, it is something special. Once you choose to attack a target, the characters attack automatically. Individual limbs can become damaged, and even hacked off. Its difficult to put into words how satisfying the combat is, due to how original and unique it is, it's something that must be experienced in order to understood how great how it feels.
This game is whatever you make of it--your only goal is to simply survive. You can choose to be broke and destitute, or you could be a rich thief who manages is a city or town.
I don't want to say too much about the game, as I think it's incredibly satisfying to just dive into it headfirst. This game is like if The Sims and Runescape fused together and were wrapped in a post-apocalyptic samurai aesthetic. This game harkens back to being a kid and playing with your toys, letting your imagination fuel the fun. This right here, is a real ass mother **** game.
Kenshi is a sandbox game with elements from both RPG and RTS. It's still under development and still has quite a bit to go to be anywhere near completion.
That being said, it's been long since I played anything as original and complex. In a world of generic console ports, this game stands out as a diamond in the rough.
You can play it as a single character or as a larger group. You can roam the lands with its post-apocalyptic like setting as a trader or a bandit, or you can start your own outpost and defend it against attackers.
If it in ready state will fulfill half of what it seems to promise, it will be a clear cut 9'er, but as of now I believe it earns the 7 I gave it.
Ps Sound has not been added yet, so whip out your media-player for some background music.
Some people love it, others not, many doesn't know it. The atmosphere and the vibe of the game is very cool, dystopian and immersive. Game is original and unique, rich in mechanics. But is also junky, but that's ok. That can irritate, but for just a short moment. However, to me the game lacks a bit more of something. I played it for the first time in June 2023, and spent probably a week or so with it, made a team, bult a base, researched stuff, bought many buildings, and ultimately got bored of it. Now, a year later in may 2024, I watched again some Kenshi vids and thought will give it a go again, but this time, I played it only for several hours before getting bored. I wish it would hold me for more time. And that is why I think game needs something more. Not necessarily a story, but rather a bunch of individual stories of npc's that are on their own missions, and by them joining your group their stories can became part of your story. This approach would allow to keep the "make your own story" aspect of the game, while simultaneously would enrich the world. Regardless, huge respect to the creator for sticking to his guns and actually making something original, unique, and charming in several way. I recommend this game to methodical or autistic people. Looking forward to Kenshi2.
It's very unpolished game that let's you do a little bit of everything. The downside is that it's indeed very "only a little bit of everything" as nothing feels that finished or in-depth. Better games out there if you wanna explore, better building simulations, better RPGs and better sandboxes in general. The game just has weird shallow mixture of everything which makes me question why would anybody want that. The game felt really interesting at start but after while it just made me question is this all game has to offer in X side of the game as the limits started to hit. I was given a free copy so it didn't feel that bad but I wouldn't pay for this game nor am I gonna play it any further.
If I had to describe this game in one word, it would be clunky. The game started development in 2006, and it seems like almost every aspect stayed back in that time. The graphics are HORRIBLE, to put it lightly, it's almost if the creator never bothered to change them throughout it's long development time. The gameplay is clunky and buggy like crazy. The world feels lifeless. NPC pathfinding is a mess. And there are a heap of other problems. This game may have been good had it actually released back in 2008 or so, but it was pushed back and back and back, now everything about it was just stuck in the past.
One of the few impressive parts of the game is that you have the ability to do practically whatever you want, you can be a bounty hunter, a farmer, you can travel the map as a trader, you can be a thief, you can be a raider, be a cannibal, become a miner and sell copper etc,
Summary A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended sandbox gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave, or just food for the cannibals. Research new equipment and craft new gear.
