Necrovision is overall a good game, with some fun moments and original features, something to praise nowadays... but it does not reach to be a great game. Thus, combining the little awareness of the game in comparison with the latest larger productions, will probably make Necrovision go mostly unnoticed.
They get a 10 because the game is criminally underrated. Yeah its clunky and lacks the amount of polish we are used to now, but at the same time you can clearly see the love and talent that was involved. Im sure a lot these guys went on to greater things.
The game delivers non-stop action from start to finish, constantly throws new enemies at you and gradually introduces new abilities. It won't be everyone's idea of a good time, but leave your brain on the installation screen and you're likely to have plenty of mindless fun.
If the story had been a lot more coherent and decided whether it wanted to be tongue-in-cheek or tragic, then it would be a bit easier for me to get on board and enjoy the ride. Even so, having made the commitment to play through the game, I found myself appreciating the abundance (sometimes overabundance) of combat features and the hundreds of enemies waiting around each corner.
At first, NecroVisioN seems like a fun game. But when you realize that the 1237th encounter with monsters is the same as the 561st, and that melee is just a polygon mess, all the fun goes away.
Great game if you love Painkiller or similar games.
Lots of undead to blast away (though I'd love some more), interesting story and enough dynamic gameplay to keep you interested all the way through.
Though it needs to be harder (on a higher difficulty), more monsters and co-op mode.
Review is based on NecroVision: Lost Company
seams it doesn't exist on Metacritic
It's funny how people give it a 2 or 3 after probably playing this for... like 1 hour. This game starts dull, where you fight supernatural creatures with WW1 weaponry, but 2-3 hours into the game, you also get supernatural powers and become a powerhouse of destruction... and fun. GRAPHICS: It's the PK engine, so don't expect anything great. SOUND: Cheesy voice acting, but some nice weapon sounds. Repetitive music.
Necrovision is a hard game to get through because of how clunky it is. actually the whole game is a mess but you can see how much love went into it even if it is a mess . it has all the telling signs of a devs First game and that is because it was and they got better as the game went on . sadly by the end of it i just wanted to get to the final boss and rushed through
Story: an american soldier on the british front lines of ww1 ? ok makes no sense already but i digress , then Hell opens up zombies are a thing and a dragon flies across the sky , it was a kraut scientist, but the scientist as being controlled by vampires , but the vampires were being controlled by demons and the story just keeps getting messier and messier but the end surprised me. also the main character starts out like a guy who just wants peace and ends up a powerful demigod obsessed with violence and that character development is perfect for video games , if this story was in any other medium it would not work or at least work as well Still a wacky mess though (in a good way )
Story: 6.3/10
world building : there is minimal world building done here as most locations are varied but not very detailed sure you can find letters and stuff but the games level design lets me know at every step this is just a video game and not a fully realized world , i can appreciate what they tried to do especially in the latter half with the vampires world as well as their weapons cause got dam are they cool .i like how the vampires live underground as they hate the sun , a human would think it was hell as i think the scientist did. and how they use drill trams to get around is a nice touch. but other than that its just a bunch of cliche **** and demon stuff only really creative by making them all into one game
World building:4.5/10
Graphics: CAN I GET A FRIGGIN FLASHLIGHT jesus this game is dark and not in the edgy kind of way in the lighting kind of way i could barely see anything while in hell , i wasted so much ammo on spray and pray "Raise your brightness and gamma " I DID it didn't help technically this game is a mess and works right half the time , it looks shoddy , like a plastic dollar store toy , a toy you would still have fun with though. this games graphics are saved entirely by art direction
Graphics 3.3/10
Gameplay: keeping in theme of this game being a mess the game play is a buggy mess , aiming feels off , why does the rifle look bent ? how come i get sent 20 feet in the air trying to walk over a corpse. how come the ogre monsters are so quick and to get away from them i have to sprint side ways and there is no other strategy for them ? why is every boss justa bullet sponge ( at least some of them have different stages i'll award points for that) why is this game both frustratingly hard and mind numbingly easy ?????. that is the bad , the good is the dual wield and melee mechanics though i enjoyed those especially early game , not so much late game
Gameplay:4.2/10
Sound design: is the music good ? its fitting sure, repetitive yes , plays at weird times also yes , final boss music is the same as the menu music ( really?!) voice acting was terrible in a campy funny way though , not that the acting it self was bad cause i think the main character did alright just the direction was off and would tunt the enemies after killing them then he would go into pacifist mode for a cut scene and it would be SO jaring like no one says" DEATH DEATH AND DEATH" as if he is enjoying carnage then says how terrible violence is. it makes no sense and really brings you out of it , sound design that actively takes you out of the game at almost every turn that's just a no from me
Sound design 2/10
6.3+4.5+3.3+4.2+2=20.3
20.35= 4.06/10
in terms of critically this game **** , but there is a passion here , and i has charm , a so bad its good feel , don't go in expecting to be blown away but it has its enjoyable moments
What a mess. Gameplay is dull and frustrating, weapons are unresponsive, movement is jerky, what you have to do is often unexplained or unclear... All in all, this is the least fun game I've played in ages.
At the second "boss battle" I encountered (quite early on), I just quit: I had only a pistol... to handle a boss?!? (and flying ghosts too!).
Other issues:
- When you get the machine gun (huge recoil), you lose the rifle (but you don't know it), so after mowing down 2 or 3 enemies (MG bullets last that long), you remain with just the pistol. WTF!
- Enemies often swarm you, but don't worry: you never die (on Normal difficulty at least). So you feel overwhelmed and immortal at the same time!
- You can't kill MG-wielding enemies with bullets: you have to use explosives, BUT: grenades are rare, so you can go toward them (while they are bullet-spraying you) to plant TNT on them. Best strategy ever (NOT!).
Maybe the game improves in later levels, but I highly doubt it. It seems the devs were either too constrained, or they had no idea what makes a game fun.
Only positives are:
- The game makes you feel how awfully horrible WWI must have been (but moments later it becomes ridiculous, so you lose immersion anyway).
- Atmosphere and level design are decent.
Thank God I got this game in a cheap bundle. But honestly, it's not even worth the time I spent downloading it.
SummaryNecroVisioN is a first person shooter that immerses gamers in the claustrophobic trenches and bunkers of the First WorldWar. Reminiscent of a Lovecraft horror, NecroVisioN seamlessly mixes the harrowing battlefields with a nightmarish demon and vampire underworld, unleashing a truly visceral experience. The year is 1916 and the Great War...
