The developers have masterfully adapted everything that made the original Painkiller so enjoyable to a new engine that looks fantastic and plays liquid smooth.
I still haven't played the retail of this yet, however I worked on this game from ground zero and the beta testing phase. I conceived the idea for the soul catcher weapon and contributed some other input on weapon behaviour, monster design and other general stuff. I want to thank everyone here who gave positive ratings & reviews, since it was made by a small passionate team, and when I say small as far as beta feedback for the single-player you could count them on your fingers.
I am really looking forward to putting this one through its paces in a few days time, so anyone else interested head on over to Steam, get a good deal & support the devs! : > )
This is a masterpiece and must have for Painkiller fans. Good old school painkiller with some good new features. I do not understand the criticism of new grafics. On my Nvidia GTX590 it looks realy god. It is more fun, more nic, simply a wery good remake.
As a horror-tinged slaughterfest that vomits blood and bile on the face of modern first-person shooter convention, Hell & Damnation distills the essence of the Painkiller series into a tight, finely honed package.
Lacking innovations and overly simplistic, Hell & Damnation is still much better than other Painkiller games – the abominable Redemption, Resurrection, and Recurring Evil.
This isn't a remake or a reimagining of the original Painkiller; this is a high-resolution texture pack for an outdated eight-year old game that's missing significant story beats.
This is THE BEST GAME, because, yes there aren't some levels of the first Painkiller, but the multiplayer, when I find a match, is COMPETITIVE, not such as CALL OF DUTY or BATTLEFIELD 3. The graphics is PERFECT, at the level of BATTLEFIELD 3. I think one of the best game of the world.
Old school shooter. Good story good gameplay the guns are the same as in the old version with upgraded graphics. Great soundtrack. The only complain i have about this game is the AI and enemy spawn locations. They can literally spawn in front of you and it's frustrating and the AI is so bad they cannot use cover or protect themselves they just run towards you.
Overall a great game played myself no coop

This is not a remaster. This is not a reboot. This is a weird baby, that mother tried to drown, but it just kept coming back. Hell & Damnation is kinda a sequel. It's on a new engine made by new people, but it doesn't offer anything new and it actually worsens the game in the process. Most of the music is good... but that's because it's from the ORIGINAL Painkiller game. The new tracks are hit or miss... depends. The second problem is the graphics... they are worse than the original. The third problem is the optimization. Game doesn't work that well. The biggest problem of Hell & Damnation are the levels. The game has 11 levels. All of the levels that Hell & Damnation has can be found in the original game and the battle out of hell expansion pack. Original had 24 levels, Battle Out Of Hell expansion added additional 10. If you bought Painkiller Black Edition back in the 2005/2006, you had 34 levels and an amazing classic game. Hell & Damnation has 11 levels and all the other levels are available as DLC and they are expensive. If you buy all the DLCs for this game you'll lose a lot of money and you will gain nothing in return, because same stuff (actually more) is found in Painkiller Black Edition. Actually by getting Black Edition you're getting a better version of the game with better graphics and all levels intact. This is just a sad reskin and a big cash grab. The only good thing about this game is the CO-OP which saves this game from a 0/10 rating. If you want to play with a friend then get this, if you want to play alone, then NEVER BUY THIS. Buy the BLACK EDITION instead which is Painkiller + Battle Out Of Hell. Also they somehow made the game easier as hell. Playing on nightmare is like playing original Painkiller on insomnia... what a joke. Pickens condemns!
This must be one of the dullest, most boring and most repetitive games I've played in a long time. Even so I'll very seldom give a score under 5 unless it's technically broken in some way. And Hell and Damnation is: occasionally the magic pentagram save point jobbies don't appear leaving me having to slog through the same boring stage again.
Beyond some pretty screenshots this game leaves little to recommend. Even the boss fights are bland.
