  1. With a good plot to keep you involved in the one player action and huge networking capabilities, this is one that will keep you entertained for quite some time. Just blow stuff up. Oh, and blow stuff up. And don't forget to blow stuff up.

It's all about the gameplay, and when you crank this baby to hard, or God forbid, im-freaking-possible, you'll find the gameplay to keep you going for hours piled upon days, piled upon weeks.
  3. An engine dubbed Geo-Mod...puts this game in a class by itself. [Nov 2001, p.129]
  4. The sense of actually being there in Parker's fight against oppression really makes this a game worth getting.
  5. As far as looks go, Red Faction is more like the cute girl next door than a hot fashion model from the Upper West Side: It's pretty, but it won't make a man drop to his knees and thank God for giving him sight.
  6. The storyline itself isn't the greatest, but it is very well done compared to what this genre of game usually sees and the high quality graphics back that story up very well.
  7. Red Faction is not a classic, but the new Doom ain't out yet buddy. Red Faction will allow you to practice the frag fest fever for the time being.
  8. A couple of years ago, Red Faction would have been a stellar title but now, it's simply a very good one.
  9. While its short length and lack of character development leave much to be desired, the multiplayer feature more than makes up for the diminished gameplay, adding to the replay value.
  10. The single-player experience is great on its own, which explains the success of the PS2 version, but with the addition of a powerful and customisable multiplayer mode, PC owners are in for a treat.
  11. Its relative lack of originality can...undermine Red Faction's appeal for more-experienced players, for whom the game will provide mostly familiar territory. Nevertheless, Red Faction is an accomplished shooter in its own right.
  12. The end scene is even more anticlimactic than the one in Half-Life. Without going into spoilers, It's like you're having great sex with a chick, and just about as you get ready to launch "Apollo 5" to the Moon, she suddenly gets up, picks up the cell phone, and calls her husband to ask if he remembered to feed their 2-year-old son.
  13. A fine FPS with plenty of action and intense gameplay, even if it is derivative, too short and a tad uninspired.
  14. What was supposed to be Red Faction's raison d'ętre – French for "cool feature designed to make it seem like more than just a cheap Half-Life clone set on Mars"--[the Geo Mod technology] turns out to be its biggest disappointment.
  15. In the hands of designers who will use Geo-Mod technology to mine its full effects to combine creative gameplay and a well-told story, it could be awesome.
  16. A lot of great ideas with poor execution. The premise for the story is good - a lone gunman rebelling against an oppressive corporation - but the storytelling and characters are so thin that you're never drawn in.
  17. The only serious knock you can make against it is that (ironically) having been designed primarily with the notoriously problematic joypad control in mind, the gameplay is a lot less challenging when attacked with a mouse and keyboard. [Dec 2001, p.115]
  18. It has the setup, but its drab, by-the-numbers execution lacks any flair.
  19. If you can, I recommend actually skipping past this game and trying instead to find a copy of "Red Faction 2." It's really a much more refined game and there's really no connection between the two games at all so you won't miss a thing. [Sept 2005]

A lovely game. The geo-mod is really good however, unfortunately, the game makes almost no use of it. At the beggining there are a few attempts, but these quickly stop as the game progresses. Whilst this may seem a little disappointing, you will soon be so caught up in the story, the objectives, the whole Red Faction universe that you wont even mind. This is a great game, not because it's incredibly fun, realistic or epic, but simply because its an interesting, well played out tale that's good fun to play and has a host of great characters and weapons. This game got me hooked on pc.
  3. Total single-player completion time: 6 hours. I was always hesitant to pick up Red Faction. But I'm glad I finally did because it was worth the experience. Sure, the graphics don't hold up well, the voice acting is laughably bad, the stealth levels are annoying, getting one hit killed by the AI the instant you peak a corner is cheap, and getting 1920x1080 resolution requires a community patch. But the game is FUN. I used the various weapons equally, the environmental damage is neat (although underused), the story is simple yet interesting, and the fast paced gameplay keeps you on edge. What I especially appreciated were the various branching paths leading to the same objective. I only wish the game were a bit longer. Full Review »
