We finally have it up on the Steam. For what I've seen, I must say that it didn't get to be the same error as the port of the first Adventure was earlier. This note is quite based on the comparation with experience we've seen with the First Adventure on the PSN/XBLA and Sonic Heroes, that came after the original Adventure 2. Can't say this game is way better or fixed than it was before, but it's a relief to see that this one has not been nerfed in terms of quality like the first Adventure. So, we have HD graphics, trophies (yes, finally a good reason to A-Rank all stages and missions)... But this is all to be there. We got no big news beside the chance to mix the best of the original Dreamcast version with the best of the Gamecube version via DLC. Nonetheless, it did not made the same mistake of becoming the bugmass the first Adventure had become on the PSN/XBLA version.… Expand

Oh boy, this game is something. People say all the time that "this is the best Sonic game ever made". Just scroll up if you want evidence. But is it that good. Well...no. But it isn't terrible either. I'll go over it in a list below.
Story: SA2s story is surprisingly dark for a Sonic game. Robotnik (I refuse to call him Eggman, and I don't care if that's his original name) begins the story by breaking into a secret G.U.N (yes, seriously) research facility to awaken "The Ultimate Lifeform" who turns out to be newcomer Shadow the Hedgehog. As thanks for releasing him, Shadow tells Robotnik he will aid him with his plans, those plans involving the destruction of the world. Shadow is mistaken for Sonic (somehow), leading the Blue Blur to be arrested. For the sake of the character limit, I'll stop here. SA2s story, while much darker in tone than would expect, isn't nearly as much of a cluster**** as the story of this game's predecessor. It also benefits from the games streamlined structure (more on that later). The end result of this is that characters don't constantly have to stop and explain the plot to the player, as was the case in the previous game. The story isn't brilliant, and a few plotholes start to crop up in the late game, but overall it's entertaining enough and never left me confused as to what was happening.
Characters and Dialogue: Because characters don't have to explain everything anymore, they're free to show off their personalities a bit more. The characters are mostly entertaining, and the dialogue has a surprising amount of levity. The voice acting is miles better than SA1 (except for Tails). On the subject of cutscenes, although the animations are, again, better than SA1, the English voices still aren't synced up correctly and the sound mixing is just awful. Try turning off the subtitles and see if you can understand Robotnik or Shadow (you can't).
Structure: Sonic Adventure had six characters that made the story a ****ing mess and a bland, barren and overly large overworld that bogged down the game and brought the pace to a screaming halt. Taking this into account, SA2 leaves the player with just two stories (Hero or Dark) that are three characters apiece. It also removes the overworld entirely. The player is taken from one stage directly to the next, with only cutscenes and boss fights interrupting the flow. I don't really need to say it, but this is a massive improvement over the first game.
Gameplay: Okay, time for the big one. SA2 is split into three different gameplay styles: Speed sections (Sonic/Shadow), Mech sections (Tails/Eggman) and Treasure Hunting sections (Knuckles/Rouge). During Speed stages, you must rush through a linear platforming stage to get to the Goal Ring. During Mech stages you control a mech capable of targeting and shooting multiple enemies. You must guide your character through the stage, combo-ing as many enemies as possible for the highest score. Finally, the Treasure Hunting stages drop you onto an open area and tell you to find three items (usually Emerald Shards). The Speed sections are great fun and while the Mechs can feel a bit clumsy at times, I don't usually have any problems. The Treasure Hunting stages, on the other hand, have some issues. The biggest being the neutered radar, which can only detect one item at a time. Which item is that? Good question. No answer. And since items are randomly generated each time you start/restart/die in a stage, and the Hint Boxes are worthless and lower your score anyway, getting a good score on these stages is entirely luck-based. If you want to A-Rank every stage, you will have to pray to RNGesus for these levels. The kicker is that if you don't care about score, these stages are actually quite fun. On the whole the gameplay is fun...if you don't care about your end of stage Rank. Start chasing those high scores and you can expect to start seeing red at some of the ridiculous **** you need to pull to get the highest Rank.
Also, there's the Chao Garden (which I never touch but I'm told is great if you're into Tamagochi-style games) and an entirely worthless Kart Racing minigame (just play Mariokart).
Presentation: As Dreamcast games go, SA2 looks pretty good and runs at a smooth 60FPS. The soundtrack is the stuff of legends as well. However, the aforementioned sound issues in cutscenes, and the occasional animation goof (such as one notable cutscene in the Pyramid area where Amy suffers from Rigor Mortis) prevent me from giving it a gold star. Still better than SA1s seizure faces.
Multiplayer: The multiplayer might be the best thing about this game, especially if you have the Battle DLC. Additional characters for each game mode, fun takes on the single player gameplay, the works.
Overall, this game isn't flawless. It's not the best Sonic game of all time (Sonic CD). It's not even the best 3D Sonic game (Sonic Colours). But it's still a good game, and worth the $10 you'll pay for it.… Expand

Upon playing it, I realized thatI loved this game when I played it on the Gamecube, so when it came to Steam finally, I was pretty ecstatic. Upon playing it, I realized that this was a pretty good port, except one problem. I found that this game, at least at the time I played it, only natively supported the 360 pad. This is a problem for me, since I have no 360 pad to speak of. So I had to rough it out with a keyboard and/or my key mapped 3rd party pad, both of which felt very clumsy.
To those whom have never played this game, you play as Sonic/Shadow stages, where its your standard Sonic affair of rushing through the level and killing as many enemies in combos to get a higher rank. The Tails/Eggman stages involve you on a small scale mech again killing things in combos to rack up points. The Knuckles/Rouge stages involve you finding 3 shards of the Master Emerald most of the time, in a treasure hunter sort of stage where you can ask for hints. Finding them without hints and quickly racks up the points there. The Sonic/Shadow stages are the most fun in my opinion.
Aside from the poor controller pad support, this is a very good port, the game itself is a 9/10 borderlining a 10, but the aforementioned poor controller support puts this port at a 7. If you have a Gamecube/Wii/Dreamcast lying around, I'd suggest finding those versions of the game.… Expand
