  • Summary: Take Command: 2nd Manassas is "the most detailed Civil War game to date," according to Paradox Interactive, presenting nearly 50 scenarios with historically accurate maps, leaders and regiments as well as authentic flags that separate the different states. Play any leader on any battlefield of the 2nd Manassas campaign. You can play all main battles from both fronts with as much or as little detail as you like. Command combat from a third-person view, with full military control over your troops. Just like those who fought in the American Civil War, you will face difficulties in communication, uncertainty over enemy positions and numerous other factors affecting the outcome of each battle. What’s more, the scenarios are linked, meaning that the outcome of one battle will affect the next. In the end, there can only be one victor; you decide the outcome. [Paradox Interactive] Collapse

  1. Innovative features together with realism and playability make it a must-have for American Civil War enthusiasts and recommendable to all tactical-scale wargamers. The lack of strategic elements is a bit disappointing, though. [Aug 2006, p.55]
  2. It is is enjoyable, playable, and will find a happy home in any strategist’s library, hardcore or otherwise.
  3. Wargamers and Civil War buffs will love the easy-to-play, historically authentic Take Command: Second Manassas.
  4. Second Manassas is not a surprise; it's testimony that these guys know what they are doing. [July 2006, p.67]
  5. Its sprite-based units overlaid on a 3D field look cheesy(yet may still tax low-end systems), but stiff looks are a welcome sacrifice for historiccal accuracy and scale. [July 2006, p.67]
  6. The level of depth and historical accuracy is not going to sit easy with most gamers, but if you consider yourself a war-gamer or even a historian then this has your name written all over it.
  7. So not worth it, pick up "Hearts of Iron II" and get a proper strategy/history game.

As an amatyre student of the CVivil Warv and a connnoisseur of table top games with miniatures, the gameplay offered by Take Cpmmand is second to none in realism. A Masterpiece! Expand

None of the 90-98 percent reviews of this game seem to have made it into meta's reviews for some reason, like http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews140141.html which is a pity. Expand

Without doubt the best US Civil war PC game yet. The second best is ,again without any less doubt, History Channels Bull Run. No question.

Best Civil War game .. plain and simple. Its funny to read some of the reviews and obvious they have no idea what they are talking about. If you like historical accuracy over flashy graphics this is for you. The 3d engine does do a great job making you feel immersed into the environment.. more so considering the maps are 100% accurate. The best ACW games on the market. Graphics don't make a game, gameplay does.

The best American Civil War game to date. The game is about the GAME, not the graphics. If you're only worried about the graphics, play Total War. If you want a game that approaches its subject with respect and tries to provide a simulation instead of an arcade game, try Take Command. What they sacrificed on the graphics front was returned ten-fold on the gameplay front. This game is still on my hard drive, the Total War series (up to Medieval II) sit in the closet gathering dust.
