  1. If you are an adamant fan of "Duel Masters," this may be your new best friend. However, due to the repetition and because it isn't at the same level as "Magic," this is not my cup of tea.
  2. It’s not the type of gameplay that’s going to attract a large audience, and players turned off by the slow-paced nature of trading card games will not find anything to like here, but it is an exciting game despite these shortcomings.

Because Duel Masters only consists of card battling, its more difficult to say that the digital version is superior, especially if you have a friend to battle against.
  4. Longevity issues aside, Duel Masters is still one of those games that are great to play if you only have 10 or 20 minutes spare at a time.
  5. Presents a lackluster challenge until you get far enough along to fight the more advanced enemies, for which you may actually have to work for a win.
  6. Duel Masters in videogame form is redundant from the actual playing cards. There's not much in the way of animation or storyline that furthers the card battling experience. The only benefit is that you can play against the AI if you can't find a friend.
  7. Does a pretty good job of interactively portraying the card game, but it doesn’t do much to woo newcomers to the series.
  8. Fans should be pleased enough with the game, but if you're not so familiar with the characters and mechanics, it'll be poor value for money.
  9. The biggest knock against Duel Masters is something that has plagued the card game to videogame scene for a long time: no online component.
  10. If you like the show, own the cards (of which there's a booster pack inside), and know character names by heart, you'll love it. If you're anyone else, it's a toss-up.
  11. If Duel Masters already has its hooks in you, then the game will be inherently appealing because it executes most of the basics with just enough competence. However, it's otherwise fairly unimpressive and probably won't do much for the uninitiated.
  12. While the graphics and the sound may not be up to par with other games in today's market, the gameplay isn't so bad if you can find space in your little card-playing heart.
  13. The poor story mode and the absence of the online play really hurts the game's overall value.
  14. Graphics and sound are saddled with an odd ‘cartoony’ vibe and powered by an outdated engine though.

Atari needs to be willing to lay down some bank to polish up the graphics and sound, write a much more compelling single-player adventure, and add some online goodness.

Succeeds in the crucial areas where a strategic card game should. It’s got a solid set of rules and is fun to play. We would like to see more cards, though – 139 is just enough to keep things interesting. As a video game, it leaves a bit to be desired in terms of looks and innovation.
  17. I imagine myself back in the cafeteria, all the geeks, myself included, huddled around the folding banquet tables, oblivious to appearances, just having fun. [Feb 2005, p.87]
  18. But the game lacks any sort of genuine thrills, and instead takes the easy way out, sticking with average design and a challenge level that's junior-high level at best.

The comprehensive, well-designed 20-minute tutorial is about 19 minutes too long for us.
  20. The loading times are also very long — even by PS2 standards, and people who are not fans of the card-battle genre will find Duel Masters to be slow-paced, methodical, and just plain boring, as each card battle will take at least 10 minutes, and there are many, many battles.
