With exceptional action, puzzles and scripting as well as good graphics and minimal loading times Extermination is a great and imaginative new addition to the horror/survival genre that will teach even Resident Evil a few tricks and ranks as Sonys best PS2 game to date.
-
90Although not terrible complicated or intricate, its still a great game with a good interface and lots of scary stuff.
-
84Although it isnt the best game in the world, Extermination really strikes a chord in me for being such a good evolution of the horror adventure genre.
-
80Instead of marching towards you as you rip them apart with machine gun fire, these nasties scuttle and run like real bugs. Its enough to give you the willies.
-
73It's mechanics and gameplay may annoy you, but if you liked John Carpenter's version of "The Thing," you should be able to buy into (and enjoy) the storyline.
-
71It never quite comes together in as compelling a fashion as others of its class. It's far from being poor and is certainly entertaining at times--it just lacks the originality and extra level of polish needed to provide a truly memorable gaming experience.
-
Theres no compelling reason to pull you though the game, like Max Paynes revenge theme or Solid Snakes score to settle with his ex-teammates.
-
One of the best new PS2 titles out there, and despite some creative drawbacks, the sound effects and graphics are nicely done and draws you in to the experience.
-
70This one gets messy, real messy.
-
69An above average game and nothing more...It's not that bad, though. Not bad at all.
-
69Unless you have a lot of extra fifties lying around, spend your money elsewhere.
-
60It's unoriginal and very short (I was able to complete it in a couple of days without really trying to beat it), but a gas while it lasts and home to some of the nicest-looking and best-renderd FMV cinemas your puny little eyes have ever seen.
-
Differentiates itself as a faster-paced action title, and holds its own with a few minor problems. [Nov 2001, p.100]
-
A solid entry in the genre, but it doesn't do much that hasnt been done before in games from Konami or Capcom.
-
While the game wont win any awards for originality, it is well-paced and does a good job of keeping the player glued to the tube. [Oct 2001, p.145]
-
50The total lack of a cluttered HUD, the animation, and the graphic detail are all good points, but lazy mistakes and no palpable sense of fear make Extermination more annoying than alarming.
-
The multitude of enemies, unique implementation of the SPR4 and a few nicely done weather effects make for a solid experience, though this is ultimately undermined by the twitchy control, awful camera and lack of free movement.
-
50A game that initially turned me off completely, but somehow managed to keep me playing 'til the end.
-
40Survival horror veterans will be drawn to Extermination right up to the very end, but casual gamers might find this title hard to swallow because of its inconsistent presentation, low replay value and mediocre story.
