100Visually, the SlugFest series has always looked damn good...And SlugFest just wouldn't be SlugFest without the antics of Tim Kitzrow and Jim Shorts. Together they have some of the funniest play-by-play I've ever heard. [June 2004, p.71]
-
90Truly one of the best one-on-one online games of its generation.
-
Coming back to commentary once again are the hilarious team of Tim Kitzrow and Jim Shorts. These guys are two of the funniest commentators I've ever heard.
-
88If you thought Slugfest was a little too childish or simple, youll enjoy the new changes like the franchise mode. Well all enjoy the new online gameplay, though.
-
Easily the most original baseball title I've ever seen.
-
85It has plenty of meat to go along with the sweetness, and is part of your well-balanced gaming diet.
-
85The online play keeps the game fresh and the franchise mode, while obviously a far cry from those present in other more realistic baseball simulations, is still an admiral effort and a nice side order to an already delicious meal.
-
85Support for both PS2 Online and Xbox Live 3.0 and a deep franchise mode extend the shelf life of the game well beyond the Home Run Derby and Quickplay options.
-
85One area I found very disappointing was the commentators. You will very quickly get tired of the unoriginal and repetitious comments they make. It also didnt seem to have any real connection to what was going on in the game at times.
-
84There are a couple of weak spots here and there but this is still the game to turn to when you want your baseball really fun and really off the wall.
-
82If you're the kind of person that wants a baseball videogame with trick pitches, turbo boosts, and sucker punches, then I have little doubt that you'll appreciate Midway's take on America's national pastime.
-
80On the realism side, SlugFest makes huge strides this year. Stat crunching is ably handled by the "Basebll Mogul" sim engine, and gameplay is easily tight enough to compete with PS2's second tier (i.e.: non-"MVP") baseball series. [July 2004, p.26]
-
80A game for anyone that enjoys the game of Baseball and wants to satisfy that need for aggression at the same time. Once you get the timing down, you will enjoy the fast-paced, high scoring gameplay.
-
Over the top gameplay coupled with nicely timed humor and the inclusion of online play makes this a great way to pass the time during the summer. Now if they can expand on the idea and drop some of the realism, Slugfest could become a true classic in the sports gaming pantheon.
-
Baseball games are sure to get a kick out of its take on the classic game, while others will likely enjoy the easily accessible gameplay and hilarious, hard hitting action.
-
80Adding live online support and a fantasy-league Mogul mode that lets you trade players, track stats, and haggle over TV rights? OK, were really psyched.
-
80Fortunately the on-screen action moves at a blistering pace, with colorful visuals, impressive animations, and eye-popping embellishments such as motion trails, super jumps, bats bursting into fire after multiple hits, and pitches that defy physics. The depth of features isnt quite up to the competitions, but in terms of action and excitement, MLB SlugFest: Loaded covers all the bases.
-
78With additions like a frighteningly deep franchise mode and online play, SlugFest's already option-laden package gets even deeper this year, though some of these additions are better suited for the game than others.
-
This is an arcade blast based on timing and violence, and its a ton of fun if you dont approach sports games as simulations of the real thing. This is a videogame in every sense of the phrase.
-
Admittedly, I would rather go through a season of the deep-pitching "MVP Baseball" or option-heavy "ESPN" over this, but if you don't ahve someone to play alongside you, SlugFest ain't a bad consolation. [Aug 2004, p.100]
-
75It wouldve been nice to have a create-a-team feature, or even a create-a-character feature, but maybe well see those the next time around.
-
75Sure I still prefer the sweat simplicity of the old school style of ball, but its been a while since Ive had this much fun playing a baseball game.
-
70With its violence, online play, and deep franchise mode, this title will appeal to both hardcore and casual baseball fans alike.
-
70This is no sim by any stretch, even with the new Franchise mode. Still, it is a decent game of belligerent baseball with mindless fun and laughs for anybody looking to play two - whether that's a doubleheader or just a deuce of innings. [July 2004, p.96]
-
It still has all of the stuff that makes it a nice diversion from the typical baseball title. But that stuff hasn't changed enough to warrant a purchase.
-
Outside of new pitch types and fielding animations, the over-the-top angle hasn't evolved at all in this iteration, and the new simulation aspect pales in comparison to al of the other titles on the market. [July 2004, p.114]
-
60Pyrotechnics aside, this is a solid sports title.
-
A decent game, though the sim aspects aren't as well fleshed out as those in other baseball games available. And the over-the-top elements don't add enough to overcome those shortcomings.
-
It serves up some decent arcade fun, but we've already been here before in the other Slugfest games, and the notable AI and control issues still need to be addressed.
-
50It flat out fails to cash in on its unique take on Major League Baseball. The Slugfest version of the game is dull and annoying.
