  1. If party games are your thing and you love the One Piece series, Pirates' Carnival will satisfy your craving for a multiplayer board game.
  2. Kids probably won't mind much, and they're definitely the target audience here. Pirates' Carnival isn't spectacular in any one sense, but the solid mini-games and well-used license are enough to put it near the top of the distinctly uncompetitive party game genre.
  3. With more polish and a wider variety of mini-games, One Piece would make an excellent addition to any party. Unfortunately, it falls just too short of its mark to appeal to any but the most die-hard of One Piece fans.
  4. If you and your friends are fans of the series, as popular as it is, Pirates Carnival would be a great way to kick back and have a friendly competition with each other. Those who are not familiar with the series or are a little older may not find the premise or even the gameplay itself all that interesting and not quite the party they were expecting.
  5. The board game concept is novel, and perhaps with a few less randomization events, it could have been more engaging, but with AI that's absolutely relentless on the upper settings, mini-games that fail to deliver the basic premise on the first play-through, and a general sense that things were rather slapped together, Pirates' Carnival lacks the kind of fun you'd expect when you put those two words together.
  6. Despite cramming in a respectable amount of licensed material, weak minigames and a plodding pace mean this ship bilges on its anchor.

It's wacky and weird and has some funny moments. It's just too bad that the actual gameplay can't seem to keep up with that kind of creativity.
  8. 45
The gameplay is absolutely textbook in its design, and while a few of the games can be pretty entertaining, the sheer amount of variety is far too small.
  9. One Piece: Pirates Carnival is nothing short of a poorly done Mario Party remake.
  10. Game Informer
I want to preface my statements that way, so that when I tell you how awful Pirate's Carnival is , maybe, just maybe, you'll believe me. [Sept. 2006, p.92]
  11. 40
If only the mini-games that you have to constantly play were more alluring.
  12. PSM Magazine
One Piece: Pirate's Carnival is the latest game to try to capitalize on the success of Nintendo's "Mario Party" games by giving us another video board game, but it just ends up falling flat. [July 2006, p.86]
  13. Official U.S. Playstation Magazine
Even if you have a Multitap and can thus play this with four real human beings, it's a poor party game. [Oct. 2006, p.88]
  14. Most of the mini-games are either boring or poorly controlled, and there's so few of them that they all get old pretty fast.
