  1. The best thing about this is the fact that every task, adventure and puzzle is fun and entertaining. It’s a fast paced game that is enjoyable for all ages.
  2. Pay attention movie companies...THIS is how it is done.
  3. It captures the spirit of Shrek and the world created for him, and seems to have enough of a challenge with learning to use four characters almost at once to provide gamers with something different and fun.
  4. With its good graphics, audio and party-based play, Shrek 2 improves in nearly every way upon the original game.
  5. The voice acting is so good gamers will think it's actually the original cast. [Aug 2004, p.7]
  6. It appeals to all gamers of any age, gender, or style of gaming. It has a bit for everyone, action, puzzles, adventure, comedy and it set in a popular film world.
  7. For the comedy alone, Shrek 2 is a must-play.
  8. One of the best things about Shrek 2 is the multiplayer. Up to four players can play, each controlling a party member. Anyone can join in at any time, so if someone leaves, the AI will continue playing for them.
  9. It has all the elements needed in a movie-based video game, and in some aspects even goes above and beyond that. However, the lasting appeal of the game leaves a lot to be desired. If they had just thrown in another gameplay mode, this game could have been spectacular.

Some frustrating A.I., however, causes Shrek 2 to suffer badly as a single-player game (or any time the computer controls a party member), and switching between the characters to overcome the menial obstacles feels like a chore when playing solo. [Aug 2004, p.68]
  11. The main drawback to Shrek 2 is its slightly flaky in-game camera feature, which does not always let you see the action from the best angles.
  12. If Shrek’s trek weren’t such a short one, then Shrek 2 would get the full recommendations, but it’s hard to justify putting down 50 bucks for a game that’s beatable in a rental period.

It's very derivative, and beyond a few puzzles requiring you to use all four characters in tandem, there's not a lot that's new here. At the same time, it's mostly enjoyable while it lasts.
  14. The most redeeming factor of the Shrek 2 game is the story and dialogue. The entire Shrek empire rests strongly on the shoulders of the Dreamwork’s writing staff and this game benefits greatly from their abilities.
  15. The visuals have their respective platforms humming at their storybook best. [July 2004, p.72]
  16. Older or more hardcore gamers are probably going to scoff at the title, but there's something to be said about an adventure title that allows you to play with four people at one time.

An amusing jaunt into the world of the movie. It doesn't require a lot of skill and there isn't a cohesive story, but I couldn't stop playing it.
  18. The jokes cater mostly to the kids, and that's exactly who should enjoy this fairy tale jaunt the most. [July 2004, p.112]
  19. Overall this game is actually well done and can be considered pretty fun, aside from the repetition, especially if you can find friends to play with, but it is also not aimed at the older audiences.
  20. A good weekend rental for kids who liked the Shrek movies, but a poor purchase unless you have several young’n’s who game together. It captures the movie’s attitude and charm well enough, but glosses over too much of its game play potential.
  21. A solid game that leans towards the easy side. The only real flaws are an iffy camera and iffier reading of its potential audience. It's still the best interactive thing to happen to the Shrek universe thus far.
  22. If you have even the slightest love for a warped look at the fairy tales we all grew up with (all based around the new film, of course), you won't want to miss Shrek 2.
  23. The game is put together pretty well, but the game is very simple and very short. On top of that, the lame wordplay and fart jokes that pass for humor just don't cut it.
  24. It's fun enough for most adults to enjoy (admittedly in limited doses) and simple enough for most kids to grasp. The opportunity for interaction among family or friends makes Shrek 2 more than the sum of its parts.
  25. Those who have long since retired their Shrek-themed bedsheets will find the game easy and repetitive [July 2004, p.94]
  26. The biggest problem is that it's just very simple and easy - proabably a side effect of being made for a broad audience. [July 2004, p.27]
  27. I can recommend Shrek 2 enthusiastically to kids and novice gamers, and marginally to all other fans of the movie. But to true action game aficionados, the game will surely be too simplistic to be sufficiently rewarding or compelling.
  28. Graphics are decent for a licensed videogame (no clips from the movie though!), but the audio (including sound-alike actors doubling for the film's stars) is so generic and uninspired it hurts just to listen.
  29. The characters look great and they move about very convincingly reacting to their environment. Unfortunately the risqué, adult humor from the first movie has been reduced to the level of a Scooby Doo episode.
  30. In the end, Shrek 2 is going to appeal to a pretty limited market. Older gamers aren’t going to want to bother with it much, but young children who idolize their movie heroes (and why do you think "Finding Nemo" sold so well?) will probably eat it up despite its mediocrity.
  31. A decidedly by-the-numbers movie tie-in. [July 2004, p.85]
  32. Though the objectives are overly simple and quite repetitive, the game is well programmed with decent graphics and a solid pace, and the cooperative aspect should make for many lively slumber parties. Just don’t expect it to keep the grown-up ogres entertained for long.
