  1. Summoner could have been a fantastic RPG that tore a new hole in the gaming world. Instead, it turned into a great fantasy game that will probably be an ass-kicking franchise.

While a bit short of greatness, Summoner is an admirable role-playing game experience that is more than one could have ever really hoped for in an RPG that's available at a new system's launch.
  3. It will also rekindle a desire in every pen and paper gamer to call up some friends, blow the dust of their D20s and return to the roots of role-playing gaming.
  4. While Summoner may not realize all of its lofty goals, it is still a good RPG with a solid storyline and an excitingly unconventional take on the RPG genre.
  5. Even with its flaws, Summoner stands out as the best RPG available for PS2 this year.
  6. This isn't a game for everyone, namely those with little patience, but for anyone else willing to put the time into playing this game will find an adventure like no other on the PlayStation 2 and currently the best RPG out there.
  7. An extremely ambitious game, but it misses the mark due to unoriginality and subpar presentation.

Interesting attack system makes fight monsters alot more challenging then in other RPG's. The storyline and plot are also very well done. It would be a 10, but they did a little too much draw in on the graphics and some of the towns are huge and may overwhelm the user at first. Expand

This was the first game I ever played on the PS2, and it was the sole reason I decided to buy the console. The storyline is engrossing, the lore/mythos of the game is unique, the characters have depth, the music is great and always well-suited to the environment/situation you are in and above all else this game is very fun.
The only drawbacks I would point out are potentially the combat system, which not everyone seems to like, the graphics of the game (the 'ugly hands and small heads' argument) and the long load times.
The combat system is quite different to the norm, requiring well timed button pushes even in the midst of battle, requiring you to always keep your cool and not button mash. This did not bother me, but bothers some people because it can sometimes feel robotic/repetitive.

Overall, many years later this is still one of my all-time favourite games, especially due to the music which seems to linger in your mind long after you have finished playing. Graphics aside, it is also a game which has aged quite well, still being playable and enjoyable many years after its release.

This game doesn't exactly stack up there with the Final Fantasy series, but for a game available at the systems release. This is pretty much what all new system games should shoot for. The graphics arent great and the loading times are relly long, but the gameplay and storyline is wonderful. This is a great game. Expand

This is a pretty good RPG. The gameplay is great, controls are good. A good game overall, but... The graphics are not so great, the pop-up is really annoying and ugly. And the loading times... They are really long. Collapse

Why call it summoner? Most of the time you wont summon because you dont want to put up with the nasty draw backs such as loss of hit points and a permanent loss of hp if it dies. You take the role of the reluctant hero with the cures that turns to a blessing. You go through different quests and become more powerful as you progress. But the game is surprisingly linear, you can never be evil. You will find the combat system dull and slow with the occasional tape of the button. But your characters start to look cool later when you equip good armor. Your party consist's of a basic group of people fighter, thief, wizard, and the balance one Joseph. They all have a chronic disease of ugly hands and small heads. You will go through the game and realize that the plot twists are acually quite expected and quickly become bored of it. But for the first time you play you will have a bit of fun. This game has about as much replay value as monopoly and you will probaly only play it once a month. Expand
