The Red Star is an amazing game; it's fast, fun, and loaded with variety. [July 2007, p.52]

Visually there's nothing like it--it is a purely artistic endeavor and as shooters go there's nothing here not to love. [Dec. 2006, p.81]

If you're an action-shooter fan, looking for a pleasant distraction, the game delivers a quality experience, considering the $20 price tag. However, if you're a fan of the comics and were hoping for some of the glorious art style and heavy plot twists, you might just wish that XS Games had left The Red Star on the shelves to rot.
  4. It doesn’t feel quite as polished as Konami’s PS2 Contra titles, but the bosses are large and feature a similar robotic look that many of the Contra bosses are known for.
  5. Despite spending years on the shelf, The Red Star ably delivers a unique and challenging blend of beat-'em-up and top-down shooter action.
  6. The game can grow repetitive over time, but being able to use three multitalented superheroes helps the game significantly -- especially with two players working together. In addition, the graphics and sound excel, and at only $20, it's an essential purchase.
  7. Although enhanced graphics and special effects would have improved the game cosmetically, there's no denying that the mechanics are dialed-in and the developers have some damned good heads on their shoulders. Add in the fact that it retails for a rock-bottom $20 brand-new, and The Red Star and becomes the next surprise hit that's on every B-list hound's radar.
  8. Self-esteem issues aside, The Red Star is a great game that stands on its own, despite the hardships its development went through.
  9. I'd suggest you treat The Red Star like you would a dead dog full of lovely cream cakes: ignore the stench of old mank and dig right in to the deliciousness!

Simple, harmless entertainment, an old school arcade game jazzed up (a little) for today's gaming generation - and as such, it does just fine.
  11. Purely from a gameplay perspective, it works.

It's cheap and it made us cheerful with its retro gameplay and easy-going difficulty levels. [Issue#153, p.85]

Where The Red Star is best is in its combat system, which brilliantly blends melee attacks, shooting, and blocking defenses. There's an almost poetic beauty with the mastery of these, as you unconsciously perform incredible attacks by switching between and blending the three.

The Red Star, whilst not a title that is groundbreaking in any way, offers some incredibly fun gameplay and is definitely worth a second glance for those wanting some old-school style fun.
  15. The big problem with this game is the loading times. Because of them, most people will pay no attention to the storyline as they will be preoccupied with just hammering the X button in order to get through the next loading screen.

Worth 20 quid? For no-nonsense arcade thrills, just about. Worth two years' wait? Sadly, not quite. [May 2007, p.70]
  17. The graphics are what you'd expect from a PS2 game, with a nice gloomy futuristic style. For only $20, The Red Star is a great example of why the PS2 still rocks, and why old school gaming is far from dead.
  18. While you could argue that it's relatively short, it has variety: new enemies are introduced on almost every level and each boss is distinctive, differing in size, strength or attack pattern to the last.
  19. A modestly brilliant game throughout, and is thoroughly playable and very addictive. It has some inspired boss and bullet pattern design, and gives an immediate, rewarding sensation that truly belongs to the world of retro games.

We wish the astonishing re-imagining of the Soviet-Afghanistan war that the comic began with was better represented, but the gameplay is more than capable of carrying this one. The art team did a bang-up job as well, and The Red Star even supports progressive scan.
  21. A decent, side-scrolling action romp, with admirable multiplayer offering and enjoyable gameplay. This, comrade, is well worth an investment.
  22. Whilst The Red Star might lack the polish of newer titles and suffers from some design flaws, the gameplay at its heart is absolutely rock solid and will conjure up memories of games gone by for the more discerning and mature gamer.

I am a huge fan of the original Red Star comic book. As such, I immediately found myself disappointed by the game’s omission of the any of the comic series’ staple story elements.
  24. The Red Star has a lot going for it, but due to the preceding problems, it falls well short of its ambitious goal. The complete lack of an interesting story, lackluster menu presentation, and spiking and erratic difficulty (along with no checkpoints) can make for an extremely tedious experience.

Hardly groundbreaking and extremely limited, but worth a look at for ease of play and price. [June 2007, p.82]

A decent, short-term hack'n'blast that's best with two players who like old-school games, but a far cry from today's big action titles. [Apr 2007, p.77]

If there was a complaint to be levelled at the game, apart from its somewhat repetitive gameplay, it would be the lack of checkpoints - and with such huge odds against you, it does become irritating to have to restart a level from teh beginning each time you die. [May 2007, p.78]

The Red Star is more of a red dwarf next to some of the more sharp-witted and unabashed action titles that have landed on PS2 in recent years, but one that's still capable of shininig. [May 2007, p.95]
  29. An intense, satisfying, difficult but fun shooting gallery. Whilst it ultimately lacks depth and variety and will never threaten to trouble the bigger players in the genre, it is a lot of fun and can be an [oftentimes insane] test of your gaming abilities.

If you are a gamer that still sheds a little tear for the long lost "Streets of Rage" or "Final Fight" days then this game might please you by bringing back some fond memories. My verdict would be that it delivers nothing new despite the claims and just becomes a little boring and repetitive too quickly.

The Red Star may have been entertaining during the era that influences its design, but it simply can't keep up with the offerings of the present day. [July 2007, p.85]

The warfare is as dull as the characters. [June 2007, p.101]

Definitely ahead of its time when it was scheduled to initially release...though not graphically, but gameplay wise. A great action adventure Definitely ahead of its time when it was scheduled to initially release...though not graphically, but gameplay wise. A great action adventure meets platform shooter. Very reminiscent of old-school arcade games like Contra or Aliens. Definitely worth a playthrough even if you aren't familiar with the franchise. Full Review »
