Playstation All Stars Battle Royal is an amazing fighting game wrapped in an idea we have seen before. When it comes down to it, what makes a great game in any genre is balance and All Stars has it in droves. Although some will never see its brilliance, I would maintain that once played it could change the mind of many a sceptic. Add to this a return for some of Playstation's well missed characters and awesome value for money in Cross Buy and you have one of the most refreshing fighting games in years.

DO NOT call PS All-Stars a Smash Bros. knock off, it is actually anything but a copy or clone of Nintendo's fabled fighter. SuperBot has taken the most basic premise of that series and crafted a full-featured fighter that delivers something beyond the casual experience and that crosses over into the competitive fighting realm.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale delivers some great fighting and hilarious comedy at the same time. It's a must-have for anyone who loves the fast-paced style of fighting popularized by Smash Bros. While it would be easy to dismiss the game for being a copycat, doing so would be a mistake as the game does quite a few things differently that help it stand on its own. It's a very well put-together game regardless of its inspiration and is worthy of at least a rental for skeptics.

Exactly what a mash-up should be – not single game environments, not stories that only include the character of one specific game, but a fusion – a celebration even – of the brilliant PlayStation games that we all know and love.

This game offers a potential for endless hours of fun...We all expected a knock-off, but this fighter has an identity that's completely unique.

SuperBot Entertainment has meticulously merged three generations of platform lore into a four-player brawler that's both approachable and cunningly complex.

For the most part, barring the half-hearted campaign, they've greatly succeeded. If you find yourself playing Smash Bros. into the wee hours of the morning with friends, you should enjoy PlayStation-All Stars: provided that you have at least some affinity towards the franchises that take part in this tournament.

PlayStation All-Stars is a deeply engaging fighter and love letter to PlayStation fans that ultimately triumphs over shallow single-player content and a few design quirks.

As a tribute to the PlayStation family it could have been better, but as a fighting game it's outstanding. Loads of fun based on a great multiplayer will have us playing for a long while.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is a great fighting game, and is a lot deeper than you might think.
  11. 85
After working my way through the multitude of options and modes this game has to offer, I can say conclusively and with confidence that while there's still a few wrinkles to work out in the combat system, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is an outstanding example of an approachable fighting game that surely deserves your consideration, and easily earns the right to step into the winners circle and stand with the big boys.

A fun little game that will give you hours of "just one more fight then so I can get even" entertainment.

Everyone says PlayStation All-Stars does nothing but cheaply rip off Super Smash Brothers, but there's more to it than that. A lot more, in fact. This is in every way a solid fighter, with a large and well-balanced (though not yet as good as it could have been) cast, many colourful stages and deep, rewarding gameplay elements. Above all it's fun - if not at times a little chaotic.

Sony managed to rewrite the manual for party brawlers and has, despite minor faults, delivered a great fighting game. The super system works well and feels refreshing. With beautiful environments and unique fighting styles Battle Royale will entertain you for quite a while.

Even lacking a bit of polish, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is an impressive piece of work especially for PlayStation fans and those fond of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros series. It's fun and easy to get into, and offers enough local and online multiplayer fighting action to keep PS3 and PS Vita players interested for quite some time.

PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale doesn't redefine the genre and doesn't make anything special but the mix of PlayStation-air with all the arenas and fighters, the entertaining gameplay and the cool multiplayer-action is damn fun!

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has a lot going for it. I find the single-player a tad disappointing, the learning curve can actually feel too steep for certain characters, and you may start hearing about various combat balancing issues (I'll bet money on that). But the control is rock solid, the entertainment is always of a certain quality with virtually no glaring flaws or drawbacks, the diversity and variety of the roster is absolutely fantastic, and the multiplayer could definitely attract a great many people.

Do yourself a favour this Friday and grab a couple of mates, invest in four controllers, knock back a case of brewskies and work that arse groove on your couch as PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is going to keep your interest for a quite some time.

Creating a brawler similar to the Super Smash Bros. wasn't an easy job, but the SuperBot Entertainment guys demonstrate that everything is possible. Deep and funny, this is a game that Playstation fans can't miss.

Overall, I have to confess that I wasn't expecting a huge amount from Playstation All-Stars, but it surprised me. The Supers system provides a good twist on the Super Smash Brothers formula, it's obviously been lovingly put together and it's simply a great deal of fun. It's definitely a game that's worth playing.

Let's forget about the game that pits favourite iconic video game characters such as plumbers and Pokemon for a minute and focus on what this is. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale stands on its own two feet to show that it, too, has a place in this world.

Battle Royale isn't the most original of games, then, but it's far more accessible than most fighters, rich in fan-service and PlayStation history, and a fun party game to boot. It may never particularly surprise or break any moulds, but it's a seriously fun, well-crafted brawler, and well worth a look, particularly for fans of the franchises it houses.

While it has been accused of cloning the Super Smash Bros. franchise, in the end All-Stars Battle Royale is a game with its own character that will certainly satisfy the PlayStation die-hard fans.

Oriented to the characters and for maximizing the possibilities of fighting, the fans will find here quite a proposal worthy of a reunion of stars.

We can't help but compare PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale to Nintendo's Super Smash Brothers, even though it's not very relevant. Battle Royale creates its own identity quite well by providing great and addicting gameplay. It is far from perfectly polished, but in its base is a gameplay concept that guarantees days and days of fun.
  27. 80
An entertaining effort, particularly in the company of friends. If you're playing on your own, though, it might seem just a little too sparse.
  28. Nov 21, 2012

The rock-solid fighting mechanics alone make it worth a look, but even non-fight fans can enjoy the frenzied fun of video game icons beating each other mercilessly. Where else can you see the brutally violent god of war bested by an anthropomorphic raccoon or a rapping puppy? Nintendo should be paying attention; it's not a genre of one anymore.

Comparisons to the Super Smash Bros. series are apt, but PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale stands on its own. If you're looking for a rich single-player experience that brings together all your favorite PlayStation characters into one ultimate story, this isn't your game. It is very evident that much of the focus went into character combat design for the explicit purpose of a deep online community and that's where PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale excels.

It's a well-thought-out game with responsive controls and a magnificent roster. It's the first game that I can confidently say gives Smash Brothers a run for its money. However, it's not perfect, and it certainly doesn't hold a candle to more balanced hardcore fighters on the market like Street Fighter, BlazBlue, Tekken, or Skullgirls.
  31. Nov 20, 2012

Latency issues aside, 90% of your time with PlayStation All-Stars is going to be spent fighting, away from the game's lifeless game modes, unlockables, and challenges. And that fighting, easily the most important factor of the game, is an absolute blast, even if the way it resolves doesn't always feel fairly tallied.
  32. Nov 20, 2012

Battle Royale has good roster, great netcode and online multiplayer with accessible and fun gameplay. But has mechanics that are too simple and some overpowered characters and attacks.
  33. Nov 20, 2012

While it doesn't innovate the genre to which it belongs in any way, Battle Royale is still simply fun, immediate and full of personality. From a technical point of view, the game does not allow complaints, while a moderate disappointment is to be expected in the lack of truly original modes that could have made the game a gem. Despite this, we encourage all to give Battle Royale a chance before calling it a copy of the legendary Smash Bros.

Where it may lack in depth, it more than makes up for it in charm, personality, and style-exactly the same qualities that made each of the characters on the rosters memorable PlayStation icons.
  35. 80
A tribute to the PlayStation fans that have supported the brand over the years, and whom have been eagerly awaiting a game like this since the advent of Smash Bros. SuperBot has delivered a game that embodies everything these iconic PlayStation franchises and characters offer, and it will surely make PlayStation fans proud.

I know it'll be hard for some skeptics to believe, but PlayStation All-Stars is its own game, and it even happens to do some things better than what inspired it.
  37. We're missing a bit of that Nintendo-magic when it comes to the environments. And the cast. While it is certainly representative of nearly twenty years of PlayStation, is missing the likes of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. Or any character from Square Enix for that matter.[December 2012, p.70]

Playstation All Star Battle Royale is a good Brawler Game with some issues in balancing that ruins the global experience.
  39. Nov 27, 2012
    75
The gameplay itself is great, and a lot of fun, and I can see myself bringing it out to play when friends who have the game are over, and we'll have a ball with it, but the other areas just feel a bit lacking - online in particular.
  40. Nov 21, 2012

With All-Stars Battle Royale, SuperBot and Sony miss a great opportunity to properly celebrate the huge history of PlayStation. The game is fun and frantic, but it lacks of content and interesting unlockables.
  41. Nov 20, 2012
    75
While it certainly won't win any points for originality, Battle Royale is a solid Smash Bros. clone that brings a few interesting, if flawed, innovations to the casual brawler.
  42. Nov 20, 2012
    75
The game feels a tad lacking in content. Single player for each character takes less than 30 minutes to beat, multiplayer and versus aren't customizable by more than a few basic attributes – and unless you count the bonus challenges for each character, All-Stars will have you punching, kicking, shooting and supering your opponents for every moment you spend with it. More gameplay variety would have been nice.
  43. Nov 20, 2012
    75
All-Stars is clearly similar to Smash Bros., especially because it's far more fun to play with friends. Solo, it quickly becomes repetitive and doesn't give you much reason to continue. If you have company over, however, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale can be a lot of chaotic fun.
  44. Dec 14, 2012

This is an interesting arena brawler with lots of action and a Sony celebrity cast. It can get quite chaotic though. Thanks to the tighter controls on the dual-shock controller the PlayStation 3 version trumps the Vita counterpart.

Playstation All-Stars battle Royale: Not the all-star moment everyone was hoping for, Playstation All-Stars battle Royale is instead a decent enough fighter with serious balance problems and a boring cast. [March 2013]
  46. Nov 21, 2012
    73
With a more deliberately-designed fighting system, Battle Royale strives for the sort of cred you'd sooner find in an arcade than a living room get-together. The end result is a serviceable party game that shoots for the stars but ultimately comes up short of its competitive aspirations. In its attempts to take its format in a different direction, it has inadvertently skewed itself away from the fundamentals that would make it work. In the end, you can safely say that Battle Royale is indeed not like Smash Brothers, but it might have been better if it were.

It adds that element of strategizing, especially in online play, where a player can knock out all three of their opponents in fell swoop. Plus, much to my amazement, a character I had no experience using won me my first online match – thank you, Jak.

  49. Dec 20, 2012
    70
As it stands, PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale is a cool, if limited, way to celebrate the history of Sony's time in the videogame business. It is just a shame that some of the ideas that give the game its own identity spoil it.
  50. Nov 30, 2012
    70
It's a solid and pretty entertaining Smash Bros. clone with a Sony paintjob, which beyond the obvious similarities to the original even manages to bring some individuality of its own to the table.
  51. Battle Royale is an otherwise tightly designed and technically accomplished fighting game. Consulting our crystal balls – not a euphemism – we see it acquiring a small but dedicated following on the tournament scene. It'll never be as big as Street Fighter or Tekken, but it'll always be present on the periphery. [Christmas 2012, p.70]
  52. Nov 28, 2012
    70
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale won't dethrone the Super Smash Bros. IP, but finally offers a great alternative, especially players looking for some crossover fighting games. The title proposes some good ideas such as its battle system mainly focused on combos. However, the fighting sequences lack the necessary dynamism.
  53. Nov 22, 2012
    70
There's an unexpected clarity to solo play that's lost amid the tumult of human competition, but what's never obscured – and what stands as its great accomplishment – is its fond and intricate celebration of all things PlayStation.
  54. Nov 21, 2012
    70
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale pits some of the most iconic PlayStation heroes against each other in a sprawling title fight where the overall feel of the game and its battle system are excellent. It's only too bad the game's lackluster variety options and tedious single player keep it from reaching its full potential.

  56. Nov 20, 2012

A better arcade fighting game than expected, PlayStation All Stars is pretty interesting thanks to the Cross-Buy option.
  57. Nov 20, 2012
    70
All-Stars ends up feeling a little unsure of itself, trying to identify with technical one-on-one fighters and the spontaneous scrapping of Smash Bros. in a way that doesn't completely capture the joys of either. Gripes aside, Battle Royale lays the groundwork for what could be a truly stellar sequel.
  58. Nov 20, 2012

An enjoyable, workable clone then - and a surprisingly un-cynical one - but lacking the raw ingredients to truly replicate Nintendo's success in this niche.
  59. Jan 6, 2013
    65
Playstation's most hardcore fans will appreciate the number of familiar characters but I doubt anyone will be really thrilled with All-Stars Battle Royale. [CD-Action 1/2013, p.59]
  60. Nov 20, 2012
    65
There are better, more fluid games out there for the serious fighter, and there are more accessible ones for those interested in a bit of silliness. In attempting to mix the two, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale merely ends up being competent at both and the master of neither.
  61. Jan 24, 2013
    60

Does its best to please Sony lovers, but falls down as a brawler. Makes you want to dust off your old games, not play this. [Jan 2013, p.105]
  63. A short-term thrill. It's still two years till the PlayStation's official 20th anniversary. With any luck, 2014 will see a deeper and more enticing sequel to this game.
  64. Nov 27, 2012
    60
PlayStation All-Stars makes a couple of design decisions that make the whole thing feel a little more awkward than it should. Also, for a game that's supposed to bring together the greatest heroes of the PlayStation platforms, it's missing too many key figures.
  65. Sadly, though, there's an irritating delay when dealing attacks, and when you're trying to compensate for that in a retina-melting arena environment while three tiny blurs of furious colour attack you in unison, it's all too easy to lose track of who or where you are, let alone whether you nailed the previous three button-presses of your desired combo.
  66. Nov 20, 2012
    60
It's a competent clone then, certainly better than others that have been attempted over the years, but nothing more than that. Clearly the PlayStation deserves a vastly more significant game to honour its influence on gaming. Copying Nintendo's own celebration seems not only wrong-headed but borderline offensive. In this case fans definitely deserve better.
  67. Nov 20, 2012
    60
For all of SuperBot's noble efforts in creating an accessible yet technical fighter, you can't play PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale without ever feeling like something crucial is deeply lacking. The weak roster and poor presentation actively works against the title, and while there's enjoyment to be found this is a game that's highly unlikely to stick in your mind or, more vitally, ever be asked for at parties.
  68. Dec 18, 2012
    55
Nauseatingly basic and lazily produced, this should be avoided by all but fervent PS devotees. [Jan 2013, p.63]
  69. Dec 21, 2012
    20
The constant parallels to Super Smash Bros. eventually undermine Playstation All-Stars, which has nowhere near the generosity, enthusiasm, or longevity of a Super Smash Bros.

For real, give this game a chance. if you go in with the mindset of playing this like super smash, then you will only lose every match. This game plays different and is different.
