In TerRover you drive this little tank the likes of the ones used in mars exploration through five thematic planets in 2D platforming puzzle-like fashion.

It's in its gameplay and controls where this game shines. The first impression you get is that the rover is too floaty and flips, jumps and turns over constantly. The key to controlling it correctly is finesse and subtle squeezes of the accelerator and very gentle tilts of the left stick to shift the weight of the rover left and right, it's kinda like driving a 4wd in difficult terrain, you have to keep the vehicle balanced and know when to gently push the accelerator so that the wheels make good contact with the terrain and they don't slip from too much torque. Sometimes you'll find yourself going through confined spaces and narrow tunnels which require you to to flip and shift direction and shape of the vehicle to pass through, hence the puzzle feel...

The objective is to reach the end of each stage and collect bolts and nuts for score, do it fast and without dying... Nuts are also used to buy different chassis upgrades that equip the tank with magnets, grappling hooks, guns, etc. Each chassis also has different weight and the wheels are also different which change the behavior of the vehicle considerably and make the choice of chassis an important part of solving some of the puzzles.

The game is HARD, and you'll die many times a la Demon's Souls (fortunately you don't have to start at the beginning like that hellish... thing, got the platinum so i know what i'm talking about) which i feel gives it a much welcome Old School flavor and a great sense of reward when you accomplish something. graphics are your typical flash game affair, a bit on the minimalist side, it's very colorful and the animation is fluid. Full HD 1080.

sound effects are nothing to write home about but they do the job and aren't annoying or anything, the music is spacy electronica (think paper mario thousand year door's space chapter) i liked it but YMMV, odd that's turned way too low in the standard settings.

I can't believe the scores this game's got all over the community... it's like they never gave the game a chance and when they pushed the control stick and saw the rover flip the first times decided the game was broken... a sad day for hardcore, old school gaming.

There's a demo in the PSN store, you should definitely try it... who knows... you may like it.

spend some time learning the controls, like people used to do with Defender back in the day, and you will be rewarded with the skills to conquer what is the most painfully underrated game in a long time. Work out how to use the weight of the rover and gentle application of acceleration and properly timed jumps... unlike the big website reviewers, who obviously havent bothered to do this.spend some time learning the controls, like people used to do with Defender back in the day, and you will be rewarded with the skills to conquer what is the most painfully underrated game in a long time. in fact, it seems like it has been dropped from the uk ps store new lists, only to be found deep in the menus, and no mention of it on creat's front page. i really hope that proper gamers pick up on the appeal of this game, spend some time learning to DRIVE it, and love it for its impeccable mechanics as well as the visuals.

funnily enough i feel as if after playing it i could be pretty good at real 4x4 offroading, thats the sort of skillset practice with it awards you.

probably my favourite ps3 download so far, alongside the pixel junk series. defo ten out of ten, but only now i can appreciate it with my terrover driving abilities honed. very very rewarding.

This is like a RC tank as LocoRoco. The controls are playful and fun. The gameplay is all about squeezing your rover through caves and overcoming obstacles and baddies. The sound design is amazing!! I can't help but think that negative reviewers didn't spend 5 minutes to get familiar with how the rover is controlled. Its really not confusing at all. I found the game cute, funny, challenging breath of fresh air in a landscape of games that are only hack n slash or are too easy. Get this if you like platforming, Loco Roco, or just a new experience. There is nothing wrong with this game. Expand

Even the simplest of hops becomes a pad-hurling failure marathon. [Issue#232, p.87]
  2. It really is like unicycling across a rope bridge made of ice. [Christmas 2010]
  3. I liked the basic idea behind the game, and I liked the artistic style and the way each planet of levels had its own look and feel. However, there is absolutely nothing fun about this game and I can't imagine anyone wanting to stick with it longer than the time it takes to download it in the first place.
