Old Time Hockey is not an ultra-realistic hockey sim, and it’s not trying to be. V7 know exactly what they are aiming for – simple, accessible fun – and in that they deliver like a Gordie Howe elbow to the head. Will its raw, simple style keep you coming back to play long after the beer has run out and your friends have stumbled home? That is the bigger question. Regardless, there’s enough good old hockey in this game to make it well worth a shot.
Talk about a piece of media that can capably transport the player directly into the 1990s of ice hockey games, Old Time Hockey does exactly that. From the one-colour loading screens, to the sound effects, right down to the chosen font, Old Time Hockey is a fun yet flawed experience. In a time where many developers are looking back to the 1990s as inspiration for their games, Old Time Hockey stands out as one of the success stories.
If you are a hockey this game is for you. It’s an arcade with simple or advance control settings. If you are asking for realistic graphics go play EA NHL. This game isn’t perfect it has its little flaws but it’s entertaining and when you can get everyone on both teams to throw hands that’s cool. Old school hockey it’s worth it. Nice retro vibe.
A great arcade hockey game. You can play using a couple of buttons or get deeper with right stick flicks. I appreciate the Slap Shot movie look they were going for but it comes off as kinda of ugly. Don't be dissuaded by the screenshots as the gameplay is a lot of fun. Not a fan of the objective based story mode as a simple manage a team would have been more fun. Overall it is great for someone looking for EA NHL 94 style game to play against their buds.
Old Time Hockey has all kinds of great ideas, and with a few more updates it might even get to a place where it lives up to what its creators intended to do. Right now, however, you're better off finding a way (legally or otherwise) of booting up Blades of Steel or NHL '94.
Old Time Hockey by and large was a disappointing experience. On paper, it had potential to be a good game. But as a finished product it is disappointingly held back by wads of jank and unpolish, and a few too many half-baked features.
Whether it's laying out big hits or scoring satisfying goals there's some fun to be had with Old Time Hockey. It just takes too long to get to a place of enjoyment, and even then doesn't negate the underlying issues and otherwise lack of content despite a reasonable $12 price point.
Unfortunately, classic arcade flair and humor-filled story and loading screens can only carry a game so far. Old Time Hockey is definitely trying to fill a spot that hockey-fan gamers know exists, but the dragging controls and other in-game inconsistencies leave it far from the mark. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wanted to enjoy the game more than I did; I’m a hockey fan, and an alternative to the almost-identical yearly churnings from EA is something I’d love to get my mitts on. Sadly, it seems that Old Time Hockey spent more effort in trying to claim its niche than in doing it well.
Old Time Hockey is more style than substance. Its heart was in the right place, but shoddy controls, glitches, and poor gameplay design make this an arcade-style game hockey fans just don’t need in their lives.
Overall, if you’re looking for a hockey game that controls, looks and sounds like the old school hockey arcade games then Old Time Hockey is a perfect match. There are different controls for the more casual audience and the hardcore audience or even those looking to crack open a beer and play. Whether you’re punching other players, throwing hip checks, jamming out to the soundtrack or progressing through the story mode, there is enough here to make any hockey fan happy. I did run into a few glitches that detracted from my review, but other than those I would recommend this game for anyone looking for a hockey game to play, especially fans of the genre.

I wanted so desperately for this game to be good cause everything EA makes these days is absolute trash. And worse, there’s a huge void of midway and 2k style games of the late 90s and 2000s that were amazing. Unfortunately, though this game’s heart is in the right place, the controls are so screwed up, there’s no hybrid of retro-and-semi-pro to let you skate backwards but pass with B, the speed up function always loses control and it’s almost impossible to connect a hit. Good luck trying to get a one-timer or landing a perfectly timed crushing cross check into the boards. The pass almost never goes to the player you want especially if you’re in the zone. This game could so easily have been NHL 94/96 for PS4 but missed the fine tuning. Shame. It’s the game we need.
The 2 points are awarded for the art style and the menu soundtrack but that's the most I'm going to give for this game.
Everything else about the game is not very good, the controls are awful especially when it comes to player switching, defensive play like never being able to connect a stick check or offensive play such as passing. The goalies control are awful, always giving up goals but yet the AI goalies are impossible to score against. The fighting controls... They are painful! They feel so delayed and just feel pure luck when I win a fight.
I'd stay strongly away from the game even when it's heavily discounted. If only PSN had the same refund policy as Steam then I'd be disapointed.
This game is pretty terrible. I like the art style and design of the game and the idea, but the controls are one of the worst in a hockey game I have ever played. Very unresponsive (especially during fighting) and I feel my chances in the game are more luck than what I can do with the controls. Nice try, but definitely not worth the money.
Not going to give it a 0 because I want to give it an honest review, but very disappointed anyway.
Worst hockey game ever. Have you, V7 devs, acctually played hockey? Why have you done this? PS and XBOX do not deserve it. Have registered here specially to write this review.
SummaryAggressive hockey is back in town. Experience hockey the way it was meant to be played in this old school arcade style hockey game where blood on the ice is just another day at the rink.
