Broken Sword 5 is difficult to judge when considered alone, the combined game proves itself better than the sum of its individual parts, and playing the game in an episodic manner makes it feel like someone took a hatchet to a perfectly fine game and then split it apart – and then had the impudence to not even make sure the join was neat.

As a standalone experience, Broken Sword 5: The Serpent’s Cure – Episode 2 does struggle with many of the same pitfalls as Episode 1, with its interface still a particular problem. However, it’s a more focused adventure, and lessens the emphasis on the conversation heavy sequences that proved so dire in the previous outing.
  3. Ends up signing off like a poor imitation of past glories rather than a respectable addition to the BS legacy. [Sept 2014, p.107]
