  • Summary: Blending the mechanics of melee based brawlers with the side-scrolling shooters of the classic console era, The Red Star updates each style with combo attacks, enemy lock-on features, and the ability to switch between the two seamlessly and on the fly. You will fight your way through 19 stages of intense enemies with one goal in mind: take them all down. [XS Games] Collapse

  1. The Red Star is a great game, just one that wasn’t designed for most people to get excited about.
  2. An excellent and testing shooter. [June 2010, p.117]
  3. Fans of both old school shooters and 2D beat-em-ups will fall in love with the merging of these two genre.

As a $15 game, though, The Red Star is a great deal, considering it was at one point set to release as a full-priced game. For old-school action game fans, this one's a must-download.
  5. The Red Star is a fine game, and should be played by fans of the brawler and SHMUP genres. Whether you dig up a PS2 version or get this one on PSP, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I like Streets of Rage and Ikaruga, but The Red Star only offers glimpses of gameplay that feel like those awesome titles. The boss fights are fun and I enjoyed upgrading my weapons and abilities with the points I earned, but there’s no story here, the game isn’t all that challenging, and it’s pretty mundane looking.

It's a blast to play, and probably the most fun we've had with video game Russians, outside of performing spinning piledrivers with Zangief.
