Personally, we love Team17's game, but the concept is starting to grate a little now. [Issue#201, p.99]
  3. It's the small touches that make a difference. [Feb 2011, p.87]

Overall, Team17 took what is great about the Worms games and further refined it, something that is becoming increasingly harder to do with each iteration.

This is the same Worms we've been playing for a decade, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

A good starting point for new players, and close to being a classic handheld Worms experience, Worms: Battle Islands also feels like a fifteen year old game with some new tweaks.

With a 15 years history, Worms is one of the most loved and known brand in the entire Industry. Like all its modern ancestors, Battle Island lacks of innovation, offering a maybe too proven gameplay, but it's always a Worms chapter, and this is really more than enough.

Worms: Battle Island keeps the series principles, two dimensions and a turn system, and it adds few but interesting new features which help it keep being fresh.

As solid as the core gameplay is, it's hard to shake the 'been there, done that' vibe of the whole package.

Friendly controls and a wealth of customization options make Worms: Battle Islands one the most accessible Worms games to date. But it doesn't really offer anything new.

Only the most dedicated of fans, or someone who's never played a Worms game before should pick up Worms: Battle Islands. If you still want a Worms title for cheap, save some cash and pick up one of the other two titles already available on the PSP.

Another perfectly reasonable entry into the franchise, brought down by a mixture of being very similar to past titles, loading and framerate problems, and – worst of all – a lack of players.

Classic Worms gameplay is still an option in Worms: Battle Islands, but there's nothing else to justify buying it if you've already done so 19 times before. [Issue#105, p.118]

One of those titles that gives the PSP it's bad name. The controls, level-design, and overall gameplay are just poorly designed. At no point did I ever have any fun with it. Admittedly this style of gameplay has never appealed to me. I've experienced numerous versions of this game on various free-to-play flash game websites. Unfortunately this PSP version brings nothing new or interesting to the table. It's just an overall bad strategy game. I highly recommend you don't play it. Full Review »
