    Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (see what they did there) is right up there with Super Mario Galaxy, Super Castlevania IV, theDonkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (see what they did there) is right up there with Super Mario Galaxy, Super Castlevania IV, the Phoenix Wright series and many other games as some of my favorite games of all times. Not only because is probably the BEST SNES game, not only it improves over it's predecessor and then multiplies it by over 9000!!, but because it's also an experience that i will never forget.

    STORY: After kicking K.Rools *** ,back in the original DKC, and getting back the banana hoard, Donkey Kong was just enjoying the day when suddenly a group of Kremlings comes and kidnaps DK and leave a letter saying that id the Kongs want him back they will to hand over the banana hoard, but of course the Kong's aren't having any of that so they go to rescue DK, specifically Diddy and new partner and girlfriend Dixie Kong.

    PRESENTATION: The original DKC still looks pretty good by today's standards, but many of the assets like the plastic trees look...well...dated. This doesn't happen with DKC2, the game still looks amazing, by far one of the best looking SNES games. Every model has sooo much more detail and the animations look fluid and really charming, with idle animations and goofy over the top designs. Not only that, but the environments and other assets look great as well, this time there's no "plastic trees" to be found, but rather a mine, a pirate ship, a ghost houses, carnavales, beehives, etc, they all have an impressive amount of detail and the game uses some really nifty effects like rain and lightning that make this world feel so much more alive and bivariate.

    On top of all that there's...THE LEGENDARY soundtrack...i have no words, this game has by far the best soundtrack i have ever heard. I feel like the most outstanding song is Stickerbrush Symphony, man what a fantastic song this is. It's one of the very few songs i have ever heard that not only does it fit the level perfectly, not only is memorable, not only is it catchy, but that it also atmospheric ALL AT THE SAME TIME. All of the songs have a different style and great melodies to them. David Wise...man i love you dude!.

    A solid presentation from top to bottom and i don't have any complains.

    GAMEPLAY: DKC2 is once again a 2D linear platforming game, where you go from level to level and the end of each world there's a creative, different, unique boss that you have to defeat. One of the new moves that you have is the partner throw, by pressing A you can throw your kong buddy to reach new ground, kill enemies from a distance or get to a bonus room and speaking of. The bonus rooms are now a creative mini-game that you play though to get a kremkoin, i won't spoil their use because is something that you have to find out for yourself.

    In every level there's 2-3 bonus rooms and a Video-Game hero coin, which improve you video-game hero status. Now this coins are very well hidden so i recommend seeing a guide for that one, when you find the bonus rooms and the coin, the level will have an exclamation mark and a DK coin on the title so you know if you missed something.

    The levels now have much more varied gimmicks like ride a balloon, get on a skull-minecart and race to the finish or get barrels to get time in order for a ghost not to get you, a level consisting of barrel blasting, use an animal buddie to freeze water or directly become an animal buddy. Yep that's right, this time if you hop into a barrel you will actually transform into one, this meant that Rare now could create entire levels around them, unlike the first game.

    And speaking of them, let's see the new faces in town:

    Rambi the Rhinoceros: Rambi this time behaves just like the first game, but with the difference that you can charge your run to find bonus rooms, kill enemies and go SUPER FAST!!.

    Squawks the Parrot: Squawks has been improved immensely, not he can spit out...potatoes i think??, and fly at will.

    Enguarde the Swordfish: He behaves just like the first game, but now, just like with Rambi, you can charge your swimming to kill enemies, find bonus rooms and go SUPER FAST!!.

    Rattly the Rattlesnake: He's the replacement of Winky the Frog and he functions pretty much the same, but this time you can charge your jump to do a SUPER JUMP!!!.

    Squitter the Spider: This animal buddy is awesome, he can create his own platforms and shoot web to kill enemies, definitely great for the platforming.

    Clapper the Seal: He can freeze water or cool it down.

    Glimmer the Anglerfish: He behaves like Squawks in the first game, he is used to illuminate the scene in a specific level.

    The animal buddies give the game so much more variety and the fact that they not have their specific levels are just the icing on the cake.

    I literally can't think any problem with, the game is polished beyond believe and paying to save is not that big of a problem...seriously. But with all that said and done i'll give this game a 10/10 PLAY IT!!...for the love of God PLAY THIS GAME!!

    This is easily my favorite DK game of all time, and DK wasn't even a playable character!     The original "Donkey Kong Country" game was such a success that it pretty much usurped Mario on the SNES console for the title of "bestThe original "Donkey Kong Country" game was such a success that it pretty much usurped Mario on the SNES console for the title of "best side-scrolling adventure". This sequel, "Diddy's Kong Quest", however, manages to even improve upon the gameplay of its predecessor and make for an even better gaming experience.

    There are two main reasons why this game is better than the original:

    1. The level designs manage to be even more interesting. Not that the levels in "DK1" were bad, by any means, but they are just more interesting in this effort. When I think back to the iconic levels in this series, I'm usually thinking of ones from this game.

    2. Dixie Kong is a better playable character than Donkey Kong. The main trouble with the DK/Diddy combo of part one is that DK is such a sluggish character. He "gets the job done", but only passably for a game that requires so much jumping. In that game, Diddy is the much better character. In part two, though, the Diddy/Dixie combination are pretty much equals. Diddy is still a bit more agile and nimble to work with, but the hair of Dixie (used for flying and throwing) makes her very valuable as well.

    The only reason I can't give this game the full five stars? It doesn't let you save after every level. I know, I know...gamers weren't used to that feature like they are now. But it still doesn't make it any better (at least for me). After about the second stage, the levels in this game get quite difficult. Difficult to the point of the gamer feeling a real accomplishment after completing a level (which of course is the point!). Yet, there is a clunky system of gathering coins in order to save (and even then it is only after you reach the "save point" in each stage). You may have to beat 3-4 VERY difficult stages (often with only a few lives to work with) in order to save your progress. I don't care what the "times" were like...that makes for more frustration and less fun.

    Overall, though, "Diddy's Kong Quest" manages to slide in slightly ahead of its predecessor (no easy feat). I always had a bit more fun playing this game than the first one.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was going to give it an 8 but decided to give it 4 out of 5 because, while a short game, it's fun to play. I had a great laugh when I noticed the island from Donkey Kong Country in the background. Great easter egg Rare! While cartwheeling through the rats is fun, I felt the best time had was when I got to be the rhino. Seriously, that think can kick some major ass! Beating the game required jumping onto a flag pole, much like in Mario Bros., except this time you get an item. I don't know what the item does or whether not getting it changes the ending but it was not the ending that I enjoyed most but the journey across Gangplank Galleon. After I beat the game a secret level opened up called Mainbrace Mayhem, which I assume gives you the game's soundtrack after you beat. You'll enjoy Donkey Kong Country 2 even if you aren't familiar with its predecessor, so go out to Gamestop and buy it! :) Expand
